One of the best albums of the 90's and maybe one of the best alt rock albums of all time for me. Its utterly sublime.

This reminds me of being 16... I discovered them around that age (I might have been 15) when I saw their video for “36 Degrees” on MTV’s 120 Minutes. I later bought this album when I was in the UK for the summer with my family, as they were bigger over there than in the US at the time. Haven’t listened to them for years - I forgot what a clever, evocative lyricist Brian is/was. I love the tone of their guitar sound, too. This is one of their best tracks, imo. Even as a teenager, I was fascinated by this song - but now, over 20 years later - it’s a fucking masterpiece. Truly haunting, introspective, and enigmatic. Beautiful. I wish I had seen them in concert. I’m not familiar with their post-“Without You I’m Nothing” work, aside from some of their covers. But, I remember seeing that they were touring with Weezer around the time I got into them, and had a stop in NYC, which I lived 45 min South of by train - but no one else I knew had heard of them yet - and I was always very shy and guarded about the music I loved, bc I saw it as an extension of myself. If someone made fun of or disliked a song or band I loved, it literally hurt me. And then, a few years later, everyone loved them bc of Cruel Intentions and “Pure Morning” lol (no hate, btw!) It’s just, in retrospect, I wish I had just gone by myself or had the courage to ask a friend...

Maybe sometimes her male side screams in her head causing the confusion and self doubt. And in the end, he gives up, giving the control of the body to the transwoman.

Reminds me of me in some of my relationships. I have low self esteem then also the lyrics "she stole the keys to my house, and then she locked herself out" reminds me of how I would steal people's hearts then push them away. It also reminds me of having low self esteem and depression. You steal the keys to the house (society) and lock yourself out (the disconnect) you steal the keys to a car (therapy) and then you lock yourself out (therapy won't help) "she wears her tears on her blouse confused and racked with self doubt" reminds me of any abuse I've been through because you'll cry wondering if it is yourself then doubt yourself

I know this comment is 3 years old but I'm very sory for your loss. I also lost my best friend to suicide back in 2006 and still think about him all the time. I was mad at him and blamed him for many years. It wasn't until recently that I finally broke down crying alone in my apartment apologizing to him and forgiving him. Letting him know that I no longer blame him, that I love him and will see him again someday. Losing someone that close is something you never fully get over but it does continue to get better with time. Please know that Heaven is a real place and you two will be reunited one day.
