PJ Harvey - Water Lyrics

water
walking on
water
for years
taking it into my head
living by the right lines
reading what the very man said

water
walking on
water
neighing on eleven years
taking it into my head
mary mary drop me softly
i've been reading what your very man said
neighing on eleven years
taking it into my head
leave my clothes on the beach
i'm walking down into the sea
prove it to me
now the water to my ankles
now the water to my knees
think of him all waxy wings
melted down into the sea
mary mary what your man said
is washing in all over my head
mary mary hold on tightly
over water under the sea

This song just makes you feel like you can take on Sabini at the Epsom derby.

I thought this song was about a mother who didn't want to accept her daughter was a grown woman and didn't like the fact she had developed a relationship with a man. Thus taking her daughter away from her.

  11. K.... E....

The song's lyrics tell the story of a woman committing filicide. The woman drowns her daughter "down by the water" and "won't see her again". The final coda features Harvey whispering the lines: "little fish, big fish swimming in the water / come back here, man, gimme my daughter". The refrain was based on Lead Belly's rendition of the traditional American folk song "Salty Dog Blues". In 2005, Harvey used the song's lyrics in a Spin interview as an example to demonstrate that her songs were not autobiographical: "Some critics have taken my writing so literally to the point that they'll listen to 'Down by the Water' and believe I have actually given birth to a child and drowned her.

Any time I'm watching her music videos or live performances from this era, I see so many comments arguing against it --- saying that they think it was overly theatrical, that she jettisoned her ambiguity or mysteriousness, that she stopped playing guitar live and that her dance moves are goofy, that she was showcasing her "sexy side" and was no longer herself --- and I just have to say that I think this era is marvelous and that the whole thing I get from it, even if she herself dismisses this era as too flashy, is that it was all part of the album's main character. I think if anything, it made her more mysterious to do something so unexpectedly weird and drastic. I think her presentation only highlights an already spectacular collection of songs. And remember, she did write them and perform them on the album...why is concentrating on singing live without the guitar a problem? Always thought this was one of the coolest parts of her career.

Kto tu trafił z powodu książki "Zapisane w wodzie" ("Into the water") Pauli Hawkins? PL?

    peaky blinders

  26. N.... S....

This REALLY reminds me of The Ring, both are about a little girl being drowned, PJ looks like Samara's mom in the movie plus theres a Ring-shaped bubble at the end.
Also this is irrelevant but the songs bass line reminds me of a slithering black snake, I like that.

  27. A.... S....

Imo the live version on '10 years later with jools holland' is better

Happy 50th Birthday PJ Harvey <3

  61. A.... ....

    Great song, horrible video

  62. v.... ....

Happy 50th B-day for tomorrow (October 9, 2019). After hearing this song (23 years ago), I immediately went out to buy the tape. I enjoyed all but one of the other songs on the album even more. Each album has been a pleasure with "White Chalk" being my favorite. Thank you for continuing to produce music worth listening to.

    v.... ....

viocult I’ve been listening to PJ all day in a happy birthday mode. She’s one of my favorite artists of any kind ever.

I love white chalk. Although I can’t choose a favorite. Just earlier I watched a video of the devil live, with her in the white dress, it was beautiful.

    v.... ....

Holy SHIT! She's 50? Where has the time gone?

  63. A.... ....

I dont get all the comments about the "big fish little fish" part. What's so creepy about it?

    A.... ....

For people like you, the power rangers say their colors.

  64. D.... M....

Just like the video for Man Size, you're in no need of scenography, stand-ins, CGI, etc. Harvey does it all by herself and it's incredibly interesting to just watch her be the way she is while the song plays! Terrific and rare!

  65. H.... S....

i dance like this when im hungry

  66. M.... P....

    Está bien, me encantas, grl!

    really amazing 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸!.

  71. L.... P....

Sounds like the pedos got her early. Scary looking lady.

    L.... P....

Yes, I was thinking the same ... In MK Ultra programs some pedo criminals drawn children quite to death and then " salve " them. To make brokenmind children with various personalities.

  72. M.... S....

    not too shabby

  73. B.... B....

I ate super to this song at a nursing home full of cool ass people. They played The Dead Milkmen - "Big Lizard in my Backyard" after that. After they all ate and had a 6 people orgy! Crazy freaking day!

  74. s.... ....

    Damnit Polly’s hot

  75. B.... B....

Season 2 of Peaky Blinders brought me back to my teens in the 90's, grunge we all were, we went from grunge kids to raver kids in our early 20's. Wasted so much of my younger years partying but the memories of staying up late at night, hanging out in a field with my friends, laying on the trunk of the car staring at the stars in the sky or late night swims at our local swimming hole, listening to this music will be memories I will always cherish.

  76. J.... K....

Blew my mind out when this came out. Finally little PJ showed her sexy side. I wish the audio wasn't so processed and compressed. Dull, but perfect, as the 90's demanded.

  77. R.... H....

I became a fan of PJ Harvey after seeing this music video on Bevis and Butthead. Another big part of that though was being a teen and seeing Polly Jean Harvey and thinking she was extremely beautiful, which she is. A beautiful woman singing a good song is usually something one takes notice of.

  78. P.... R....

    I lost my heart
    Under the bridge
    To that little girl
    So much to me
    And now I moan
    And now I holler
    She'll never know
    Just what I found
    That blue eyed girl
    She said "no more"
    That blue eyed girl
    Became blue eyed whore
    Down by the water
    I took her hand
    Just like my daughter
    I'll see her again
    Oh help me Jesus
    Come through this storm
    I had to lose her
    To do her harm
    I heard her holler
    I heard her moan
    My lovely daughter
    I took her home
Little fish, big fish, swimming in the water.
Come back here, man, gimme my daughter.
Little fish, big fish, swimming in the water.
Come back here, man, gimme my daughter.

  79. F.... D....

    PEAKY BLINDERS !!!!!!!!!!

  80. J.... B....

My first introduction to Miss Harvey. And I have never forgotten her since.

  81. F.... ....

It occurs to me that P.J. Harvey kinda pre-dates Lady Gaga but without the crazy Vegas-type costumes. #BondGirl :)

    F.... ....

Um, she does pre date LG, not just kinda.

  82. W.... L....

I dream of meeting someone as beautiful

  83. N.... ....

    What hell song lol

  84. G.... ....

    She's attractive af

  85. S.... S....

I remember this from beavis and butthead.

  86. U.... ....

    asmr before it was cool

  87. Q.... G....

I heard about this song in Basketball Diaries, and now it's StUcK iN mY hEaD 😂😊

    Q.... G....

I had that soundtrack in 8th grade! And it was the first pj harvey song I heard and been a fan since

  88. M.... K....

one of my top5 songs of her..

  89. R.... V....

Damn. I concentrate on the music from the 60' thru the 80's so much that I missed out on PJ Harvey and other artists from the nineties. I love this song. She's a great singer and this song is so seductive sounding. Love her dance moves also. I'll be seeking this woman's music out from now on.

  90. F.... ....

I’m going back to the 90’s! Screw this crap.

  91. U.... ....

am i the only one who is here 'cause of Paula Hawkins's book?

    U.... ....

    Nop me too

  92. M.... S....

This is true music. Unlike the crap now. I was a teen when this song came out. So nostalgic listening to this now. Female artists in the 90s were everything.

  93. D.... B....

I remember my dad playing me this when I was quite little and we were driving home in the dark. It TERRIFIED me. And it's the only song that still gives me anxiety after all these years. There's something hauntingly beautiful about her voice that I will never forget

  94. C.... B....

    Way better than DR. SEUSS

  95. s.... D....

Now imagine if it was a man performing this song. Making songs about murdering children is not art, and any person who thinks so is likely a child abuser.
