Pitney, Gene - Only Love Can Break A Heart Lyrics

Only love can break a heart, only love can mend it again

Last night I hurt you but darlin' remember this
Only love can break a heart, only love can mend it again, mm, mm

You know I'm sorry, I'll prove it with just one kiss
Only love can break a heart, only love can mend it agai-ain

Give me a chance to make up for the harm I've done
Try to forgive me and let's keep the two of us one.

Please let me hold you and love you for always and always

Only love can break a heart only love can mend it agai-ain
Only love can break a heart only love can mend it again

Pitney also did the wonderful whistling on this. His vocals were delivered with tremendous feeling without seeming indulgent--- a subtlety and sophistication that belied his age while his voice was perfection for the teen angst of discovering the pain that accompanies young love. Retrospectively, his was a big talent for any age though it was targeted for the burgeoning teen pop-music market of that era. His was an unique voice which will probably be enjoyed by many generations to come.

Greetings to all my brothers and sisters of Rhythm & Blues and of the many other Rock'n'Roll sounds that filled the airwaves during the 50s and 60s that defined our loves, losses, hopes and dreams.

Besides hearing the latest hits blaring from the radios at the local stores in NYC, I was blessed to have had a teenage aunt that would put on her latest 45 purchases: Devil or Angel by the Clovers, and many others.

Now that I'm 72, these "oldies but goodies" have become immortal, and although I have an eclectic taste, I do need some level of punctuation, identifiable melody and an uncoded story line in my songs. I'm not built for anything more esoteric than "Shoobe doo pah pahdah".

  77. Darker Times R Coming

Another great singer like Billy Joe Royal !

    Linda Deason

Darker Times R Coming Yes he and Billy Joe Royal And Johnny Tillotson were the greatest singers of the 60’s. Besides Elvis that is!!!! They were so touchable, and Elvis couldn’t be, because the girls acted so wildly even when he was older!!!!

    Linda Deason

Darker Times R Coming I loved Billy Joe Royal so much. I had the honor of seeing him several times at the Caravan Of Stars Concert in Jackson,Tn. I didn’t know he had died until I mentioned that he was one of my favorites to the lady sitting beside me at the Caravan Of Stars Concert. When she told me he had died, I fell apart and ran to the restroom to cry. It broke my heart. I have some pictures we made of him at the Concert a couple of years before. I was hoping to see him and get him to autograph them at one of those Concerts. He was wearing a blue shirt and it made his beautiful blue eyes show up so great.

    Darker Times R Coming

Linda Deason, I’m very glad you love him too. He also reminds me of Gene Pitney. Only love can break a heart song. These singers were great. There songs make me feel warm inside and I miss those days of yesterday. Love songs have always been my favorite even Elvis was a favorite of mind. Glad that you love these singers as much as I do. You must be a great person. Thanks for your reply, love you, and take care!
