Pitney, Gene - Backstage (I'm Lonely) Lyrics

A thousand hands applaud tonight
I sing my songs my star shines bright
I stop and smile I take my bow
I leave the stage and then somehow

Backstage I'm lonely, backstage I cry
You've gone away and each night I seem to die a little

Out on that stage I play the star
I'm famous now I've come so far
A famous fool I let love go
I didn't know I'd miss you so

Backstage I'm lonely, backstage I cry
Hating myself since I let you say goodbye

Every night a different room
Every night a different club
And yet I'm lonely all the time
When I sign my autograph
When I hold an interview
Can't get you out of my mind

Come back my love come back to me
I need you now so desperately
What good is fame it's just a game
I'd give it all to be the same

Backstage I wait now, hoping I'll see
Your smiling face waiting there backstage for me
Your smiling face waiting backstage for me
Backstage
Backstage

my dad was a fan I grew up listening to these great artists gene's voice was so distinctive it really makes your spine tingle !! best male singer of his generation ? I think an argument could be made for that 😀

  30. k.... ....

One of my favorite singers ever!!  A singer and a gentleman! Died way too young!

  31. L.... o....

  34. r.... l....

    classic record

  35. I.... J....

Who thumbed this down? I hate you.

    I.... J....

Only the severely tone deaf people would thumps down the Gene.

    I.... J....

Maybe it was the sound quality, which isn't the best, but I love these old b/w videos and I love Gene, so willing to put up with it.

    I.... J....

Only the hard of hearing would thumbs down this. Absolute legend

  36. d.... ....

Can anyone say for certain what Gene is singing in the bridge ("every night a different _, every night a different _ ")? Doesn't sound like 'room' and 'club' to me.

    d.... ....

+darrenjray   Every night a different girl                       Every night a different club(If you're able to read his lips it helps a lot.)

    d.... ....

Every Night a Different Girl ,Every Night a different Club and yet I'm Lonely all the Time

  37. d.... ....

This clip is hilarious. Firstly, there's the Best Supporting Actress behind him, there's Mr Goofy trying to get in the shot and then there's the impatient kid at the end who can't wait for him to finish singing so he can get an autograph. Classic Gene!

  38. A.... D....

My grandfather Bill had Gene Pitney's greatest hits and this song was in it, he used to play the album every Sunday while my family would prepare the Sunday dinner.

    A.... D....

my granda billy was the same haha :) used to love dancing round the kitchen to these songs! :)
