Pink Floyd - The Gunner's Dream Lyrics

floating down through the clouds
memories come rushing up to meet me now
in the space between the heavens
and in the corner of some foreign field
i had a dream
i had a dream
goodbye max
goodbye ma
after the service when you're walking slowly to the car
and the silver in her hair shines in the cold november air
you hear the tolling bell
and touch the silk in your lapel
and as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
you take her frail hand
and hold on to the dream
a place to stay
enough to eat
somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
where you can speak out loud
about your doubts and fears
and what's more no-one ever disappears
you never hear their standard issue kicking in your door
you can relax on both sides of the tracks
and maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
and everyone has recourse to the law
and no-one kills the children anymore
and no-one kills the children anymore
night after night
going round and round my brain
his dream is driving me insane
in the corner of some foreign field
the gunner sleeps tonight
what's done is done
we cannot just write off his final scene
take heed of the dream
take heed

Pink Floyd The Gunner's Dream Comments
  1. Bear's Vision

This is like the realistic version of John Lennon's imagine. It actually asks for the respect of order rather than the destruction of it for some naive utopia.

  2. Paul West

This one rips the heart out.

  3. Ha ha More ha ha

This and two suns in the sunset. Put on the headphones or ear buds these days and listen to 2 suns in the sunset.

  4. Ha ha More ha ha

The final cut. Best album ever.

  5. Kazimir Czyk

I am utterly in love with this song, the picture of a soldier flying through the air while his funeral flashes in extreme detail through his head before passing away.
But it makes me really uncomfortable that i can’t connect the song with the video.
Would anybody mind explaining whats happening and how it relates to the lyrics?

So what happened, did he kill himself?

    Noah Peters

I believe there's another music video where he goes on and kills a bunch of politicians in the croquet scene.

It has to be immeasurably rough for all those familys who lost loved ones in the Falklands. I think thats what this is about

  22. stnstns

    my favorite pink Floyd album

  23. Kalle S

Honestly spoken: I don't like the album "The Final Cut". Although there are some great songs to find: The Fletcher Memorial Home, The Gunners Dream and The Final Cut for instance. But you can feel that this isn't really a team effort.

    Dave Lewthwaite

Rogers eventually admitted he was up his own arse for this album. But "The Gunners Dream" is RATM before RATM was a thing, and along with "Paranoid Eyes" "Not Now John" and "Two Suns" this album is horribly relevant again. Shit.

Also, get your filthy hands of my desert!

  24. Trinitarian

Shit song from a shit album

  25. Franz Kafka

My favourite album of all time.

  26. Caleb Dehart

"Oi mate, ya got a loicense fer that bottle?"

  27. Colonel Sanders

"and the RAF doesn't bomb the children anymore"

    Trinitarian

Fuck him. Stupid line. He must know about England, London in particular, getting the shit bomber out of it by the Nazi's and how many civilians, especially kids the bastards killed.

    Trinitarian

Fuck Waters. The Luftwaffe bombed the shit out of England especially London killing thousand of civilians, especially kids.

  28. NoobishTitan

    Fuck dude

  29. Grace Antonio

This song is a complete masterpiece for humanity. Roger Waters is a great lyricist & a consumate artist.

  30. Zachary Jones

I'm an alcoholic who cries during this song

  31. Benjamin Carnahan

    what is this footage from??

  32. Henry Noone

25 years with pink floyd music and i never came across this song. What a surprise.!!!

  33. Chandra Kristian

    This is not pink floyd

This is roger watters , lol

    Trinitarian

Waters and yes, it was not a PF album

  34. Mesothelioma

Oh shit it’s the Fletcher Memorial Home

  35. Sven Jähnke

My Song. Leider. But this is....

  36. Benjamin Carnahan

you never hear of standard issue kicking in your door, you can relax on both sides of the tracks

  37. Pedro Lapeña

Is that the teacher of the wall?

  38. Paul john Bennett

Totally underrated album. This one is up there, with The Wall.

  39. Antonio Barone

the 99 who dislike must be fan of some rapper

    Rodrigo Santos

Nah, that's Rick Wright on his alt accounts.

  40. Antonio Barone

Which band can be compared to Pink Floyd today? So sick new generetions only get trash music.

  41. Harald Christiansen

    Thank you Roger.

  42. Harald Christiansen

Tears for every man who was ever lost in a nightmare. War is a nightmare.

  43. Joe Ciccone

This video kind of sucks. It would have been cooler if the guy killed his wife or blew his brains out or something like that. Or at least fucked the bitch or something. Good song though.

  44. Benign Viewer

I've always thought that this and Gyöngyhajú Lány (by Omega) were a pair. Different artists, different languages, but same era and a feeling that compliments and flows from one to the other.

  45. Hiroyuki Heisosumi

This whole cd has the same problem....whisper quiet then ectremely loud screaming, saxophone and sound effects. The Wall does it much less annoyingly.

    1947

    Idk, I personally like it.

  46. OneOFThese NotLikeTheOther

The Final Cut what an amazing album and in my opinion one of Pink Floyds most underrated albums by far. To me it's just as amazing as The Wall if not better

    Wowbagger The Infinitely Prolonged

The Final Cut is not a Pink Floyd album, it's a Roger Waters solo album, featuring session work by Dave Gilmour and Nick Mason.

    1947

@Wowbagger The Infinitely Prolonged Still amazing and underrated.

    Michael Prado

It's the most emotional one written by Roger.

    Zoned 247

@Wowbagger The Infinitely Prolonged But it says Pink Floyd on my Vinyl Cover? It doesn't say "Wowbanger doesn't think this is a Pink Floyd Album, but he doesn't really know what he's talking about anyway, so ignore him."
    I will do anyway..

  47. Xfiles Foxisdead

But....where is Pink Floyd? I dont hear IT here?? He was missing on the wall sadly....

  48. Восьмая школа

    The saddest anti-war song ever...

  49. Jamesyboii 2000

Lmao who is here after Theresa May quit?

  50. geetpicker

it isn't Pink Floyd. It's a Roger Waters' record. music by the Pink Floyd.

  51. Fragrant Socks

For some reason I love the completely incomprehensible intercom voice stream in the beginning... Not sure if it was real.... I suspect it's real... it's a man falling to his death and nobody understands what he's saying...

  52. Neil

  53. Trey Merrill

Joan Baez introduced and then performed this song at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the late 80s. It’s not often you can feel the power of watching 50,000 people get so quiet that you can hear a blade of grass blowing in the wind.

    Tacsense

didnt woodstock go quiet for her as well ;-) what a great star she is.

And no one can kill the children’s anymore ✌🏼
May god bless all humans with love

I have fallen and i can't reach my keg

Which "god"?. Bible "god" tells Mom and Dad to take and have their stubborn, unruly Children, killed, via Rocks. (Deuteronomy something or another). If this is the "god" you are referring, to, i think you owe all the Children an apology, if this is the sort of "love" you want your "god" to "bless" them, with.

    Michael Prado

@I have fallen and i can't reach my keg The mercy God that sent Christ to die for all of us and restore the separation between mankind and Him. And I tell you, I'm PRETTY SURE NO ONE on those times did follow "as it is" the Moses' laws.

  69. Edgardo Dibe

Hi, I'm from Argentina and this particular Floyd album is very significant, because it evokes in its message the madness that was the armed conflict in the South Atlantic, in 1982. I was 12 years old at that time and I still did not understand what it meant. Years later, I realized its real meaning. Beautiful songs, somewhat melancholic and sad, but overflowing with melodies that thrill. Maybe, after The Wall, the best album of the band. Thanks for sharing.

Gunners Dream, Final Cut - Roger Waters is Genius

  72. jrad044

The Wall and the Final Cut don't feel anything like Pink Floyd albums when you compare them to the rest. I always said I was PF fan but over time I realised I like Roger Waters and what he did way more than the rest of the stuff. A lot of PF is psychedelic/prog rock or just long drawn out trippy guitar solos but Roger Water's stuff is great storytelling with a lot of pain and emotion behind it. Kind of reminiscent of the sort of ballads Meatloaf often did.

I recalled this song recently reading a list of of Top Ten Songs to make you cry. The song can be either sad or happy, just induce a strong emotional reaction. This song was not on the list. Without knowing the context of this song, The lyrics and music in the Gunners dream evoke all kinds of emotion taking you in a dozen directions, to very likely an emotionally painful place. Pink Floyd has a knack for recording songs that could drive a person to do some self destructive actions. As a musician, I appreciate music that touches the soul and stirs the heart. But much Pink Floyd's music is gut wrenching to the point of hopeless. Sadly, that's why so many people can relate to it.
