Pink Floyd - Southampton Dock Lyrics

They disembarked in '45
And no one spoke and no one smiled
There were too many spaces in the line

And gathered at the cenotaph
All agreed with hand on heart
To sheath the sacrificial knives

But now
She stands upon
Southampton Dock
With her handkerchief
And her summer frock
Clings to her wet body in the rain

In quiet desperation
Knuckles white upon the slippery reins
She bravely waves the boys goodbye again

And still the dark stain spreads between
Their shoulder blades
A mute reminder
Of the poppy fields and graves
And when the fight was over
We spent what they had made
But in the bottom of our hearts
We felt the final cut

Through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time
And far from flying high in clear blue skies
I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide

If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
And if you make it past the shotgun in the hall
Dial the combination, open the priest hole
And if I'm in I'll tell you (what's behind the wall)

There's a kid who had a big hallucination
Making love to girls in magazines
He wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith
    Could anybody love him
Or is it just a crazy dream?

And if I show you my dark side
Will you still hold me tonight?
And if I open my heart to you
And show you my weak side
    What would you do?
Would you sell your story to Rolling Stone?
Would you take the children away
    And leave me alone?
    And smile in reassurance
As you whisper down the phone?
    Would you send me packing?
Or would you take me home?

Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings
Thought I oughta tear the curtain down
I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

  12. Jason Barbush

this song isn't at all about suicide. The cut was just a call on the phone trying to reach out.

Absolutamente uma das melhores melodias existentes..encrivel

  16. Chris Nordby

The human emotion with which Waters talks/sings this gem is just unparalleled. Roger is a true lyrical genius. Gilmour's solo is just so emotive with the sustain and shake. Even without Richard Wright this is one of the very best "cuts" from PF.

  17. Robert Mcintyre

A great song.... let’s face it comfortably numb 2.0
Not at all in a bad way. Just a beautifully constructed. Water’s expresses betrayal poetically...

  38. ichaukan

A lot of people I've known have said they thought The Wall was definitely the darkest, creepiest and most surreal of any of the Floyd albums they'd heard, but I'll always maintain that it's The Final Cut. This one always gives me chills.

Masterful musical work, definitely a true classic! His deep questions confront the Being itself and become effective in the time of Today. So much hypocrisy and lack of love. The music is very consistent with the plaintive cry of the speech before the psychologist and what to say about the majestic guitar SOLO of David Gilmour, (5:31- 6:07), a guitar master!. I believe that until my death the synapses of my neurons will continue to vibrate with dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin when listening to this wonderful work of musical art! I couldn't stop a disobedient tear from rolling down my cheek when I heard this beautiful and lavish work. Congratulations Pink Floyd from Cali-Colombia !.

    Clássico!!!
Lindo solo de guitarra do David Gilmour!
    Tudo muito perfeito!

  52. Jay MacDonald

By California's understanding I am crazy and by Seattle's understanding I am not! Actually I do not give a shit what people ever think about me! No opinion anyone ever gave me actually mattered! I don't think I am crazy for how I live. I cannot work for history of employment and physical reasons. I live alone and go out to the store for provisions. I vote Democrat and I have my taxes paid. For the most part I am quiet and I try to be as polite and nice as possible. What I have to live with on a daily basis around the clock in my neighborhood is yelling, shouting, and heckling from assholes I do not personally know! It is really a long long story that goes back to 1988 when dumb crazy mother fuckers thought it would be funny to brag about me and lie about me to the world and make me famous for absolutely no reason at all! Two assholes girls started it because I had a friend named Michelle Goerig and she talks to them about me and they got pissed off because they were not my personal friends and spread lies about me!

  53. Jay MacDonald

1981 was the Final Cut for Seattle! I loved this town a lot in the 70s and then the Californians came up here and fucked it up forever! People are in a head trip for eternity in this city and whatever they say or do they just cannot get out of it! I guess California had the last laugh on Seattle!

  67. Stephen Hastings

Roger Waters and John Lennon, they both hit me like no other songwriters can. Deep to my core.

    Paul Cerminara

    And shannon moon

  68. Gilbert Pilz

There are two vocal parts during the line "in quiet desperation / knuckles white upon the slippery reins". One of them calm and sad. The other, back in the mix, crazed and plaintive. It's a perfect expression of how someone feels as they try to maintain control.

  69. 123macks

True Floyd fans love The Final Cut. It warms me inside...
I always feel uncomfortable when people treat The Final Cut as their worst album. It's a jewel.
    Thanks

    Samuel J Williams

It is a jewel. It’s funny because I love most of they’re albums and for some reason this one and the Division Bell I’ve listened to more than all the rest.

    Jessie Reynolds

    My favorite of all.

    Skipraida

@Jessie Reynolds ,me to Jessie,it gets you deep inside....

    Chuck Heston

I agree. I hadn't heard any of it before I found it in a convenient store for 4.99 in 1989. Loved it immediately.

    Bob Berch

It is brilliant. Just more of a Waters solo effort apparently

  78. Ramzi El Amine

2019 still I can barely find the shape of this moment to time

  79. Chuck

A great moment in such a bleak era for Floyd. If only the guitar solo was longer.

  87. Da Pumaface

It took me ages to realise that "The Final Cut" refers to cutting a wrist in an attempt at suicide. The idea being that the main character can't bring himself to do it, thus the final few lines in the song

    thanxx

its actually a reference to William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar:

    Da Pumaface

thanxx oh I didn't know. That's actually pretty cool - guess I really know nothing of this song heh

    thanxx

@Da Pumaface to be fair i think it works across a few levels.thats the beauty of waters. i went to se him in manchester earlier this year. was absolutely mind blowing. he has now kind of re-invented the 'Animals' album with Pigs and pigs ont he wing Aimed at the trump administration.

    Da Pumaface
