The band's taking a break in light of recent events involving Evan.

I feel like this is the absolute best recording Pinegrove has ever made and everything they put out, moving forward, should be held to this standard. They are too damn good to be recording their own stuff at home and diminishing the impact of absolutely perfect songs like this. This is a magical take captured on video that I truly appreciate and will hold onto dearly
forever.

I followed their blog and the process making. Really cozy and cilling house but I stay with my opinion that it sounds a bit cheap produced.

For example Bon Iver, he was also sitting with a macbook and a guitar bought from eBay in a house and recorded his first album but it sounded not like that.

As usual the live recordings sound WAYYYYYYYYY better than the weird iPhone quality album version.

yeah, the album is all home recorded as far as i know, and i get why they did it, it's a lot cheaper. Some people make fantastic home recordings. But the Learning curve for mixing Music on your own is huge and the trade off for cheap home recordings is often muddy and messy sounding albums.
It's a shame too, because as proven by their tiny desk concert they can sound truly amazing under a good mixing engineer.

I personally like the way their albums sound, and (at the risk of sounding too pretentious for a YouTube comments section) I think it adds a certain rawness and sort of "homegrown charm" I guess. However every opinion is cool and I see what you mean but I think that pinegrove definitely had an artistic intent they wanted to get out with how they record their albums

aclarkeslife in the end it's all subjective of course! I'm a musician myself and I prefer it when the music sounds clear and every instrument is mixed to give eachother room in the mix so I can hear what every instrument is doing.

You're definitely not the only one who likes it to sound more "raw" though, that's why I think many engineers have become really good at making music that have that Lo-fi sound without compromising clarity, the band Black Keys is a good example of this I think!

I have a tolerance and appreciation for lo-fi but I think Pinegrove's main selling points are writing, vocals, twangy guitars and time signatures... vocals and guitars sound much muddier in the releases than live vids, detract from what makes them great in my opinion. The live vids still have the raw energy without sounding overproduced or too rigid. Regardless I'll even take some Pinegrove recorded on a YakBak.

Agreed. Their airy, open records are great, but these clean recordings really make me feel some way... seeing them live was something entirely in itself as well.
