Phil Ochs - I'll Be There Lyrics

When the river of rebellion overflows, I'll be there
When the seed of discontent plants and grows, I'll be there
Watching for the sun through the dark and rainy storm
Searching for the keys to the dungeons old and worn
Let me tell you, I'll be there

When the shadow of the tyrant falls and sweeps across the land
When men would steal from others with paper in their hand
When people search for answers and the answers never come
When their troubles would be over if they thought and fought as one
Let me tell you, I'll be there

Whispering of yesterday has grown into a roar
Winds of freedom blowing out of every distant shore
When the time is ready and the call is loud and clear
Let me tell you, I'll be there

When the thunder of oppression roars and crackles, I'll be there
When those who would be free are wearing shackles, I'll be there
For the day is gonna come when they'll throw away their chains
Lift their heads and raise their arms for the struggle that remains
And let me tell you, I'll be there

Whispering of yesterday has turned into a roar
Winds of freedom blowing out of every distant shore
When the time is ready and the call is loud and clear
Let me tell you, I'll be there

When the thunder of oppression roars and crackles, I'll be there
When those who would be free are wearing shackles, I'll be there
For the day is gonna come when they'll throw away their chains
Lift their heads and raise their arms for the struggle that remains
And let me tell you
Let me tell you
Let me tell you
Let me tell you, I'll be there

I remember Phil Ochs since I was a teenager. You could always count on him showing up and playing at anti-Vietnam war rallies.

He played at so many benefits and helped fund a lot of radical causes.

His lyrics were always so pertinent and often in the face. Add to that his hard and fast rhythm guitar. He always played this cord shaped in a way where he was giving the finger.

+DNAblues You got to see Phil live? I was born a month after he died and would love to have met him. Some of the things he fought for have been partly achieved but the struggle against poverty hasn't been won at all. I can just imagine a Phil Ochs song about TTIP.

+Erika Neumann Yes I wish Phil was still alive to and Victor Jara, Malcom X, Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, Fannie Lou Haymer etc. However we are alive and must finish what they started.

"When men would steal from others with a paper in their hand" is a hat tip to Woody.

I wish you were Phil. We need you more than ever. We need a voice to sing about the government and all they do to screw us over. The CIA is doing to Petraeus what they did to you. Love You Phil

Thanks. I cry for him today the way I did when he died, but his voice and those lyrics live forever. They are as relevant today as they were then. They speak as he sang - for all time! Truth is truth. That, we can all be sure he knew as well as any man ever knew it.

  19. M.... B....

I wish Phil Ochs were here in 2012. He simply play a major roll of of the OWS movement.

  20. J.... L....

I want the chords to this. I love it.

This song is bittersweet. I love the message, but it's a sharp contrast to his disillusionment and death, along with the marginalization and demonization of the far left movements he supported.

I get such a bizarre feeling of pride, courage and sadness when I hear it.
