I guess I have to disagree with you regarding George Michael's cover being the best version of the song. I've tried listening to several clips of this by George and I just couldn't get into his version. I love the song but not that version. I'm not particularly fond of Phil's version either. Both good versions but just not for me.

I love me some Phil Collins and Genesis...but this wasn't for you Phil. He wasn't singing in his usual voice. Definitely doesn't have the raw soul sounds in his vocals for this like Dennis Edwards of the Temptations.

Love Mr. Collins' interpretation of this song. I can't imagine a singer with a voice like his who would be afraid to sing what HE likes just because he's white. There have been and there will be "papas" who were/will be "rolling stones" in every segment of society not just in "Motown" or "soul town." Thank you, Mr. Collins, I loved the Temps' interpretation just as much as I love yours.

This was good, but Phil's voice didn't sound as well as original Temptation lead singers. Phil's band were good, and they played on right tempo.
Phil got the help of the surviving members of The Funk Brothers , who laid down the tracks for many of Motown's biggest hits including this one .

Phil's intent was to duplicate the Motown sound. That's why he recruited three of the Funk Bros. Can't argue that the Temps original version can't be beat.
I REALLY like this rendition of the original. I can appreciate the musicianship Phil put in this not to mention he sang ALL OF THE VERSES unlike other remakes. So this gets a BIG thumbs ups.

Facsimile is right. Sounds like the whole music track simply duplicated as accurately as possible. Was he hoping all the vinyl copies of the Temptations had worn out? But he must have been dreaming if he thought his vocals come anywhere near ONE of the Temptations, never mind all five.

You’ll agree that making new versions of a song is allowed, but not a facsimile. Every different version you have mentioned has its own soul. And there are very different sorts of public, all of them with different preferences. But a facsimile is not justified.
Bullshit... and a white person can adapt black music, of course. For instance, in a gay disco, gimme G. Michael’s version, why not... never mind if it has nothing in common with the original.
