As an alcoholic, this song really touches on so many levels.

every year since 2012 I return to this song, to put it once and still feel like the first time.

I feel the need to share this. My boyfriend commited suicide 2 years ago and I am still completley broken. This was one of our songs. I live far away from the ocean but oftentimes when I dream of him he is the ocean, and the waves overtake me and I'm drowned what I feel is drowned in my grief. Sometimes the tide is high and sometimes it is low. This may not be what they wrote it for but this is how it corresponds to my life. He was no longer a human spirit but the spirit of the ocean

Tell myself it's ok to think about it. I have been like this for around 5years. Nothing any doctor can do. They can't control my thoughts. You can't possibly understand unless you experience it. It's awful. It's the last thing you want but can't help going there. The only thing I can do is let it overwhelm me. Cry. Don't hold it back no matter how painful. Why can't I have intrusive thoughts about sex instead of death! I don't understand it so it's not easy for anyone else. All you can do is try to channel it to something else. Distract till death.

This song reminds me of a dream I had. After sleeping with a girl a few times one night I had this dream.
Normally, the water—the deep, dark, and cold ocean— holds negative feelings of anxiety, dread and death for me in dream land. This night when I was sleeping next to her, the water was different. The water was light, warm and inviting. I floated on it happily. While dreaming, I realized she was the ocean; I loved the ocean and she loved me back.
That was one of the best dreams I've ever had.
