Phair, Liz - Dance Of The Seven Veils Lyrics

Johnny, my love, get out of the business
It makes me wanna rough you up so badly
Makes me wanna roll you up in plastic
Toss you up and pump you full of lead

Johnny, my love, get out of the business
The odds are getting fatter by the minute
That I have got a bright and shiny platter
And I am gonna get your heavy head

I only ask because I'm a real cunt in spring
You can rent me by the hour
I know all about the ugly pilgrim thing
Entertainers bring May flowers

So Johnny, my love, we got us a witness
Now all we gotta do is get a preacher
He can probably skip the "until death" part
'Cause Johnny, my love, you're already dead

I only ask because I'm a real cunt in spring
You can rent me by the hour
I know all about the ugly pilgrim thing
Entertainers bring May flowers
May flowers
May flowers
To you

"Johnny, my love, you're already dead"

  3. Jacob Hanson

she is so amazing. to be capable of wording her feelings into guitar emotion. what goes beyond goosebumps? -Jon-paul shurila

  4. Natewatl

    Take some singing lessons

    NG Resonance

Jump in front of a moving train.

  5. Mark Nelson

I really like the subtle organ underneath the final chorus. Really adds a new depth to the song.

  6. Sean Nessman

My God I love love this so so so much though not really understanding a damn bit. It's just fucking absurdly mythically beautiful. This and Stratford-on-Guy, I just torture myself into finding hidden meanings in the latter song besides its weird cityscape and plane atmosphere

    Steven Hillmuffin

Not much to understand - she's a gangster's girlfriend - not sure if she killed him or not, but that's what the song is about....

    Sean Nessman

The original version on Girlsound deals with a bomb on a plane

    Brad Field

It's not about gangsters, it's about someone in the entertainment industry acting like an asshole, calling her a cunt, etc. It's full of various confusing allusions. There's an in depth discussion about it on the Song Meanings website. Speculation that "Johnny" is John Cusack (an old high school friend of Phair's), and the song is written from the perspective of an ex girlfriend of his.

  7. Bryan Navarro

I think she messed up on the lyrics at 0:29 a little. It's understandable though since she always had bad stage fright.

  8. Kenji Fuse

    But maybe Mahler?

  9. I watch videos

    Wait, this isn't Strauss.

  10. Sleats

@StonefieldJim4 i think its more of a reply

  11. matrtdc

Damn she is so hot on this video,
    watch the last couple seconds,
knocks me out. I'm am also a huge fan of her music, Bought "Exile" and "Whip Smart" when they came out but haven't come back till a week, thats to YouTube, I am discovering How great Liz Phair really is.

  12. amysacrifice

I don't think anyone's ever discovered exactly how Phair intended the albums to match.

  13. yimmygg

Don't change a thing! Hopefully the new album will live up to this performance.

  14. James Williams

Phair claims to have modelled the structure of Guyville on Exile on Main Street. Well, I've been playing them back to back and so far all I've spotted is the use of the word 'cunt' on track 4 of both albums (Phair's 'Dance of the Seven Veils' and the Stones' 'Casino Boogie'): "I only ask because I'm a real cunt in spring/You can rent me by the hour"; "Dietrich movies, close up boogies/Kissing cunt in Cannes". No doubt I'll pick up the nuances and subtleties later. ;)

  15. abey85

Bring on the new 'unleashed' material!!!

  16. davekat

    hold on there,cowpoke
Liz has jumped off the major-label bandwagon and is going back to the source, performing "Guyville" in it's entirety in Chicago and NYC
i almost gave up on her, too but
she still has one of the best records of all time on her resume
cut her some slack...how do you trump a masterpiece? especially your OWN masterpiece?

  17. raised hand

...and she's already dead. I loved her so much when she was under the everloving motherfuckin radar.

  18. raised hand

she 's a real CUNT in spring.
