Petula Clark - Sailor Lyrics

Sailor stop your roaming
Sailor, leave the sea
Sailor, when the tide turns
Come home safe to me

As you sail across the sea
All my love is there beside you
In Capri or Amsterdam
Honolulu or Siam To the harbour of my heart
I will send my love to guide you
As I call across the sea
Come home to me

I am deck cadet TNO in oil tanker. Singing is easy as sweet. Only sailor can understand when they are away from home. How to handle stress ful situation. If its a long voyage you would be in sea for a month. Every where is water. and you have to do ODME Test, chipping, painting , maintanence of suction filter(seperator) of stripping pump, ballast pump. Cleaning sludge. As we think life is easy but its Mich harder then other life. Eyes and brain open and mouth. What order given to by CO you have to do in particular time. You should be art in sight calculation, taking gyro error of celestial object. ROR is on hand tips. Its not a joke but Seaman life is full of responsiblity because you are carrying huge barrels of cargo. Now I am at home waiting for my other contract just a Need a pray from that I will get my other ship so. Aameen.

    J.... C....

Jim Crawford :Lolita was a Austrian singer, didn't know that?, but it was a German song!!,Only knew the German.version by Freddy Quinn.. There was.a German station in Vancouver, B C. Canada and German Deli's and downtown Vancouver there was a "Robson Strasse which sold German Records and I bought a Freddy Quinn record with sailor songs about 1962????now I listen to my German songs by NANA M. .from Greecel on my cell phone, never knew Julio Eglesia has record in German, before he started touring the U S in 1986,1987etc. about????,.Fascinating.Never heard Petula Clark sing this song in English until now.Sept.13,2019Friday,Sacramento,CA

I was assigned aboard that ship in the background in 1959 & 1960. It's the USS Los Angeles CA 135 a Heavy Cruiser. We traveled much of the Pacific & I saw a lot and learned a lot. The crew was Great. Home Port was Long Beach CA. It was decommissioned in 1975 and scrapped for the steel. Some of her parts were saved and are on display at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, CA. Parts saved & on display include the bridge, the mast, The bow of the ship greets you outside the museum & has 135 on it. I like to visit the museum & reminisce old times.

james zimmerman Great info James. I was twice an Essex carrier sailor from 65-69, CV-39 and 15, left over from WW2 as was 135.135 was a Baltimore Class CA. She was second in beauty only to the DesMoines class , DesMoines,Salem and Newport News . Played poker all night with the gun crew of No. 3 turret on the News at Norfolk. If I could do it over again, I would serve aboard CA or CL's. Smooth sailing mate , I think our tour of duty is comming to an end. Greetings from NJ

Another thought regarding music of the 50's and 60's. We had International hits, German, Japanese, Italian to name a few languages that hit the charts in Canada at least.

  83. J.... O....

I don't mind this version but do prefer the original German. Sung by Lolita who also did the original North American hit version. If my memory is correct came out in 1960.

  93. D.... P....

    Hi, Folks.
While I think it is a beautiful song in its own right, on another level, it is one of the most selfish songs ever written 'cos it is asking 'the sailor' to give up his work, which may well also be a PASSION, and stay at home with her.

SOMEBODY has to crew the ships of the world, both those which carry goods all around the world and those which keep the peace.

That said, my thanks to all those who served in the various 'canoe clubs' of the free world, both in war and in peace.

    Just my 0.02.

You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
