Petra - Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows Lyrics

Another sleepy Sunday, safe within the walls
Outside a dying world in desperation calls
But no-one hears the cries, or knows what they're about
The doors are locked within, or is it from, without...

Looking through rose colored stained glass windows
Never allowing the world to come in
Seeing no evil and feeling no pain
Making the light as it comes from within, so dim...

Out on the doorstep lay the masses in decay
Ignore them long enough, maybe they'll go away
When you have so much you think, you have so much to lose
You think you have no lack, when you're really destitute

Looking through rose colored stained glass windows - stained glass windows!
Never allowing the world to come in - they won't lemmie come in!
Seeing no evil and feeling no pain - no feel, no pain!
Making the light as it comes from within, so dim - the light's so dim!
- so dim - the light's so dim!

Looking through rose colored stained glass windows
Never allowing the world to come in
Seeing no evil and feeling no pain
Making the light as it comes from within, so dim, so dim!

Petra Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows Comments
  1. C.... M....

This song was prophetic, I first got saved in 1979 served the Lord (I thought) but was only serving the so called church, and now stained glass windows is a perfect descriptor of the modern American church, the powerless, self serving, money grubbing sold out to the devil church..needless to say I no longer call myself a Christian, but only refer to myself as a believer....the church has locked it doors from the inside, holding the world outside, only allowing those who they think can benefit the machine to come in.....

  2. t.... ....

Trump fans....this song is for you! Prophetic! Fear, hate, family separation, children in cages, building the wall. People are risking their lives and the lives of their children to escape the violence and poverty. These are Christians asking for help. Meanwhile, the largest segment of undocumented people in the USA are CANADIANS> They overstay their time. Where is the roundup? Racist? WWJD?

  3. P.... N....

My favourite song from the album 😊

  4. z.... ....

This might be a religious song, but its message is universal.
When you choose to see the world as you prefer it, rather than as it is, you are lying to yourself.
I'm a hardcore atheist myself, but it applies to all of us.

  5. K.... B....

This is my, I'm done. I'll play my favorite song.
I'm trying to find the first time sound when I first loved it on vinyl amp and (Smile)
    I'm 30.

  6. K.... B....

Probably the best song on this album...

  7. e.... ....

Before there was Brian, there was Bonn. Before there was John, there was Gregg.

  8. C.... H....

What is that hymn at the beginning on the organ?

    C.... H....

    Chris Hurley Showers of blessing

    C.... H....

    Thank you!

  9. S.... ....

Is this about the Catholic church ?

    S.... ....

@CDAWG 22 I don't know what day you think Catholics go to church (?) but it isn't Saturday or Monday.

    S.... ....

@Grey Poupon Although I am no expert on Catholicism, I am aware that they have Saturday services at least some of the time. I do know that Bob Hartman is not Catholic, so the writing of the song did not happen as such but from his experience within an American Christian protestant church. However, the spirit of the song can be applied to religion in a general sense as well as what it means from the writer's specific perspective. I take exception to your argument as it has nothing to do with the meaning of the song and I didn't say anything wrong.

    S.... ....

@CDAWG 22 My "argument"? I used a single word in my first response, and one sentence in my second. You wrote an essay. Twice.

    S.... ....

Another clue would be the fact that this song opens with "Showers of Blessing" written by D.W. Whittle, evangelist and brevet Major. (American Civil War) Yeah. Your average Catholic isn't going to know that hymn, much less sing it in church.

    S.... ....

CDAWG 22 you hit the nail dead on

  10. E.... S....

Sin duda el mejor disco de petra

M a big fan of Petra.... please can I get a track of this number...I can sing with d track.

  13. b.... f....

I am not a Christian in any sense of the word. However, this album is one of the top five on my list.

  14. M.... M....

I love this cover every bit as much as the original by Keith Greene(sp?).

    M.... M....

Keith Green wrote "Stained Glass" and it appeared on the album "No compromise" and was released in late 1978. This song is "Rose colored stained glass windows" (was written by Bob Hartman) and appears on the Petra album "More power to ya", released in late 1982.

  15. Y.... R....

We must get this message out to the lost world out there. The word of God commands it. A lot of people are out there unaware of their need for the Lord, how He's gonna change their lives with His love. If nobody ever talked to me about God I honestly would not be here now

  16. C.... A....

    JESUS LOVE YOU!

  17. Y.... R....

Man from the beginning of the song I just want to start crying

  18. M.... T....

    Ur selection rocks!!!

  19. r.... s....

GREAT BAND, GREAT MESSAGE, VERY TRUE THE WORD.

  20. s.... ....

John Schlitt sounds a lot like J. Jackson of ApologetiX!

    s.... ....

@CDAWG 22 That is awesome!!! I wish I was growing up when they were in their hay day!!! I grew up and became a Christian right towards the end of the best music. Christian music along with mainstream music has gone way downhill. That sounds like an amazing experience! I just saw Classic Petra Returns at Creation last year and it was amazing! Did a lot of their hits and when you mentioned about the Keytar, the keyboardist was using that as well then. I got the CD Back to the Rock and the band signed it! Yes, I have heard of Whitecross, heard a few of their songs before, they're great.

    s.... ....

@sportsygirl8 That would be really cool to meet Bob Hartman and the band. I agree, Christian Rock was at its peak in the late eighties. Sadly, the biggest opposition to the music at that time was from leadership within the church itself. Petra along with bands like Whitecross, Stryper and Barren Cross were pioneers.

    s.... ....

@CDAWG 22 Bob Hartman wasn't apart of the band when they were at Creation last year. I can't remember all their names other than John Laurie, I think that's how it's spelled, Greg X Volz and Louie Weaver, all those guys were really nice, although I didn't talk long, cat got my tongue because I had just met, shook hands and autographs of PETRA! I was so excited and shocked at the same time. Yep, they sure were! Everyone should be grateful for Petra, Stryper, Whitecross and Barren Cross for being pioneers of their respected genres. I also really like Stryper. That was awful that the leadership in the churchs opposed these bands, I know they felt that back then of the slogan "Sex, Drugs & Rock N Roll" but if they would have payed attention to the lyrics you would think they'd open up a bit to it. I can understand with Stryper though since they back then were Heavy Metal, but to today's standards they're more or less Hard Rock.

    s.... ....

@sportsygirl8 But still you got to meet the band. That's very cool anyday.

    s.... ....

@CDAWG 22 Very true! It'll be a very memorable day that is for sure. It was so hot out everyone's clothing was drenched in sweat, especially the bands. Also, memorable because that was the day that I got to meet Petra which was AMAZING!

  21. v.... ....

Man, someone mentioned rose-colored glasses and this song popped into my head. Had to come looking for it.

    v.... ....

old one was By John Conliee

  22. O.... S....

Post this as a reply on every post about Joel Osteen on FB! Joel, YOU ARE A HYPOCRIT!

  23. A.... J....

such true lyrics. even to this day.

    A.... J....

His Word is everlasting and His mercies never die.

  24. B.... M....

This song could be three times longer and I would not complain. :)

  25. A.... W....

First of all Petra set the standard for other Christian Rock artists. Their music probably reached farther beyond mainstream Christian artists simply because they had not only great music they were inspired as the message reflects. Bob Harmon & Greg Volz  set the bar and I thank God for this group who I saw many times live and wish more people had the opportunity to witness the spirit Petra blessed us with. TY

    A.... W....

Heard about this guy who was making a fuss at church, and so the pastor & elders excommunicated him, kicked him out, showed him the door. As he walked out of the church he found Jesus right out front smoking a cigarette, "What are you doing out here, Lord?" Jesus said, "Yeah, they kicked me out thirty years ago and won't let me back in either."

  26. M.... V....

This song sums up humanity in general so well. I am glad that God and religion werent specifcally mentioned in this song as it lends it ambiguity so it can be take many ways

  27. S.... ....

Wow so good to find this song again. Whilst I am no longer a Christian I still enjoy the music that made up such a large part of my early teenage years.

    S.... ....

Same story for me. This song has a wonderful guitar riff and the guitar solo is even better - sounds like David Gilmour playing! Bob did some incredible work crafting and performing this song.

    S.... ....

Me too! No longer a Christian but I still appreciate those sweet Christian tunes I grew up with, especially Petra.

    S.... ....

Stealthor: if you were ever one of us, you’d have never gone out from us.

    S.... ....

Wow Les you're so loving, God is love, and obviously, so are you! I bet Stealthor is just jumping to come back to God because of your kind words!

    S.... ....

If you are saved by the blood of jesus you are always a child of God. Sealed for all time. You may stray, but God doesn't. He is still there if you accepted his free gift of salvation.

  28. B.... ....

Such a well composed song with great guitar work beginning with acoustic and leading to electric. The Jesus movement during these times, despite some flaws, was very evangelistic and I think there was (and maybe always will be) resentment from the younger generation against the stagnancy that can occur in the Church and/or the unwillingness to engage the culture. Great song

Time to take a faith look inside. So many like this song and love what Jesus preached but I have never seen so much fear and hatred from the Christian community in the USA ever! Listen to your Lord, not the blowhards who pander for votes and money through fear. Ask yourself, "who really needs our help now more than ever?"......and do a little something. A convert through love will grow stonger roots and produce much sweeter fruits. We are giving nobody a reason to convert. I am so sick of the "religious right" grabbing their guns in fear and walling off those in need. Where are the true Christians anymore?

    t.... ....

    I agrea with you kinda

    t.... ....

Lord @thecosmicsnail , I am just now reading your comment. You are a True Christian . Need more like you. came here for Petra and this playlist after reading and watching other videos from Vangelis, Kate Bush, and the film The Cross and The Swithblade, the old song You Light Up My Life , and wanted to hear Petra sing More Power to Ya, and Not of This World , and maybe one or two of my own original song and videos on my Channel - but spirit said back up see this video first . Glad I did at 2:21 in the morning . Leaving you with a thought .... Hebrews 11 . Faith -To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see. it was by faith then, that the men of ancient times won God’s approval. ‘’ I removed this page of my Good News bible from Hebrews yesterday to take with me as I walked and traveled in town back and forth from my home. As I recently had my birthday in July, sold my car for next to no cash. I bought a Schwinn 21 speed bike, and got blessed a lot more by saving thousands rejecting the notion of traveling lazily by automobiles, and can put the future money I’d used in the past about 2 thousand dollars a year to keeping a car on the road with insurance and gas lining the pockets of men. And God will let me use it for my own special rose colored view of Heaven lol. Thanks 🙏 for your comment . Later ;-)

those poor drug runners are usually on their last hope to make something to feed their family. keep putting "quotes" around "poor" and hope you never have quotes around your situation and someone cares.

    t.... ....

did they get the inspiration for the name of this song from the old saying about rose colored glasses? How do they fit?

    t.... ....

thecosmicsnail You're totally off base. This song was never about the wars you mentioned. How can it be possible when this song was written decades earlier involving the wars America actually started (Iraq & Afghanistan) for the greed of oil and setting up puppet regimes. Moving on, but the lyrics not pertaining to the prior mentioned. Back in the 1950s, America installed a stooge to run Cuba before Fidel Castro led the Communist resistance & assumed power. Even in the 1960s/1970s, the Vietnam War was initiated by the Gulf of Tonkin incident. The Vietnam War was never about halting the spread of Communism, but actually because all the rubber used from making pencil erasers to motor vehicle & aviation tires came from the rubber trees in Southeast Asia. The big businesses needed all that rubber and wouldn't allow anyone or anything to interfere with their demonic thirst for making unfathomable amounts of money. Then America instituted a sock puppet to run Iran for cheap oil. And in 1979 came the Islamic takeover of the Iranian Government and held Americans hostage. The American Government is the most wicked, corrupt, as well as lacking complete empathy for the poor and destitute in the world. This is reflective in the legalism of countless unborn children murdered because selfish people are their own gods, thinking they have the right to determine if an unborn child should live or die, all for the sake of responsibilities.
In conclusion, this song is actually about individuals in the beautiful interiors of their churches, thinking their own world is free from all social issues, but the real issues (poverty, unemployment, hunger, food, clothing, etc.) are closer to home than they realize. In conclusion, in the words of the late Paul Harvey, 'Now, you know the rest of the story'.

Yes...what I just said. The problem is those closed off churches are getting bigger, richer, and dumber. And so are their members. Everyone votes against there well-being and futures over wedge issues. How many Alabamians were ready to vote in a predatory pedophile CUZ "at least he wasn't a democrat"? Almost half!!! That is what piss-poor education and religious dogma get you. Live according to Christ not the preacher...learn to read people! You bring up responsibility....check organized religion's responsibility to family planning...keep pumping out those puppies because they too will tithe...tax free

    t.... ....

how could any history pertain to today's problems? Do you believe what you read from 2000 years ago pertains to today? How about the founding fathers? Did they have have foresight? You judge my interpretation. That is fine. Someday the judges will be judged. I'm just trying to be kind and good and not judge. Like I've been taught. I can't stand children ripped from their parents, Lies for profits at the expense of the poor, and hypocrites who try to hold power no matter what the cost to social decency and communal norms. I'm trying to find solace from my Christian brethren but I have gotten little comfort in the past few years. Something is really going bad. So much fear, hatred, nationalism, and bigotry from the center of religion and family values....my church.

I think I just genetically like "righteous Indignation songs" - since I liked REO Speedwagin standing back pointing the finger at America in "Golden Country" and Fogelberg hating on capitalism & nuclear power in "Face the Fire." But I think both Petra, in this song, and both Jews and Christians in their scripture, are most honest in POINTING AT THEMSELVES not a scapegoat boomy man, FIRST. In fact, more honest than any religion or secular movement

    o.... ....

outdoorjanitor so your against capitalism? What are you Catholic?

My mom grew up in the 80s and introduced Petra to me and my brother when we were little kids.

I love this song, my friend got me the album Not of This World, after I mentioned how much I liked this album, I bought my own copy a week later. They were a great band...I love their music and I am not even wholly Christian in my beliefs.

    B.... H....

Awesome, thanks for sharing! Petra's music has spoken to millions over decades, Christian or not. I first heard them in 1984 and have been challenged over the many years by their music to get myself right and help others with the blessings and skills that I've been afforded. Hope you are doing well, Brian.

  41. B.... W....

I first heard this song in 1985... I was 5 years old. It's STILL my all-time favorite song. I am disappointed in current Christian music so I just keep listening to Petra over & over again. Can't remember who said it, but one of the band members says there is a sermon in each Petra song & it's so true!

    B.... W....

B Wade the drummer Louie Weaver said it.

  42. Q.... ....

    mine too!

  43. S.... ....

loved this song as a kid. I'm not a Christian any more but I still enjoy listening to this. 'More Power to ya' was probably my fav Petra album.

Same! This (and the other Greg Volz-led albums) are very nostalgic for me despite now being an atheist.

This is my all time favorite classic Petra song! Check out their new 2010 Classic Petra "Back To The Rock" album which features the original Petra line-up singing this great song plus 9 more classics and 2 new songs. It's a really good album!

  53. E.... G....

  54. P.... S....

This song makes me cry... I cried many years ago when I saw the selfishness of my life and I still cry. It is such a tragedy to just want to live your own safe life watching movies and eating chocolate, while millions are perishing outside. But luckily there is hope. I feel the Holy Spirit patiently drawing me towards His way of life, to lay down my own life as a blessing for others...

  55. R.... ....

Loved this great Petra song .....so happy to be watching the original guys in concert next Easter.

  56. L.... S....

  60. S.... ....

It is funny to see all the comments from people who remember about Petra when they were young, I discovered them only few years ago, after the band split, because of my mother's friend still had the Not of This World album... But they are my favorite band since then. This song is one of my favorite. =D

  61. A.... L....

I love Petra. I played it on my work computer last September when there was some evil satanists working in the same office as me!

There is a good message in this song.

Jesus. You are our Rock :-)

  62. e.... ....

Thank you so very much for posting these songs. My first memory of music is from this album. I must have been 6-7 years old and I almost broke down into tears as I remembered my brothers and myself playing air guitar and drums and myself singing to these songs.

  63. P.... ....

My sentiments exactly!!! I love the awesome music and witty play-on-words in the lyrics, but there is also so much Spiritual wisdom and Biblical insight woven into songs. The eras and tumults of my childhood are pretty much categorized by which Petra album was helping me through. LOVE 'EM! Anyway. (Since you asked... I just got rather excited 'cause I've never heard anyone say it quite like that. :)

  76. S.... P....

    Wow!
This is one of my favorite songs from 1986. It has such a powerful message-prophetic- as the American church overall has experienced major decline these past 22 years.
