Peter, Paul And Mary - When The Ship Comes In Lyrics

Oh the time will come up when the wind will stop
And the breeze will cease to be breathin'
Like the stillness in the wind 'fore the hurricane begins
The hour that the ship comes in.

Oh the seas will split and the ship will hit
And the sand on the shoreline will be shakin'
And the tide will sound and the waves will pound
And the mornin' will be breakin'!

Oh the fishes will laugh as they swim out of the path
And the seagulls, they'll be smilin'
And the rocks on the sand will proudly stand
The hour that the ship comes in.

And the words that are used for to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they're spoken'
For the chains of the sea will have busted in the night
And be buried on the bottom of the ocean.

Oh a song will lift as the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts onto the shoreline
And the sun will respect every face on the deck
The hour that the ship comes in.

And the sands will roll out a carpet of gold
For your weary toes to be a touchin'
And the ship's wise men will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin'!

Of the foes will rise with the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And they'll know that it's for real
The hour that the ship comes in.

And they'll raise their hands sayin'
"We'll meet all your demands"
But we'll shout from the bow "Your days are numbered!"
And like Pharaoh's tribe they'll be drownded in the tide
And like Goliath they'll be conquered!

  27. b.... ....

One of the most poetic songs written. While I do like Dylan's rendition, this really does require accompaniment of a number of people and instruments.

    b.... ....

This is my favorite Bob Dylan song. No wonder the Nobel Committee gave him the literature prize.

    b.... ....

PP&M Virtuoso the clear 3 point counter Harmony and Mary can go from contralto to a male tenor and a little husk of a baritone You had to see them in a live venue Carnegie Hall or a Greenwich Village Club to a Peace Rally Wow

  28. M.... o....

Great version of a song composed or performed by Bob Dylan.... Now included in The Bob Dylan Project, Email: [email protected] Twitter: David George Freeman @BobDylanProject Excellent.

  29. D.... M....

I'll never forget seeing them do this song live at Indiana University during a free concert at Dunn Meadow for a Eugene McCarthy rally. I was only eighteen then. I am sixty five now.

    D.... M....

Ah,the year of 1968!Will America ever have another year like that!

    D.... M....

    I know I never will.

    D.... M....

Oh! I saw them at IU, but not then. They gave a concert in the Auditorium (there near Showalter Fountain), and I was enthralled. Can't remember what year, but it must've been late '60s. (I'm 67 now.)

  30. W.... B....

Life is so fleeting. Only yesterday I was working onstage security at the first Woodstock. Now i'm 64 and only Paul Stookey is still alive. BUT THEIR MUSIC WILL LIVE FOREVER.

    W.... B....

Peter Yarrow is fine. Still. In 2018.

    W.... B....

Peter Yarrow is 80 years old and still performing!

    W.... B....

Ah, Peter Yarrow is still very much alive.

    W.... B....

And what does Woodstock have to do with PP&M?

    W.... B....

@lynda rutherford Apparently, nothing. But they DID play at the 1963 March on Washington, where MLK Jr. gave his most famous speech.

  31. M.... K....

Best version ever, even when the years have gone by! Wonderful song! Now it's about fifity years ago! Much much better than good ole Bob! Thank you PPM!!!!

    M.... K....

I agree this version the best. I think its the extra guitar that plays the high notes similar to a mandolin that gives it that extra touch...
