I love this song, and that's not a pun. I love Peter, Paul, and Mary. Mary rest in peace; you were beautiful inside and out. If you ain't got love, you ain't got nothing.
One of my favorite songs from the past - my favorite PP&M song, definitely.
I have an curious memory of this song - I had transferred "Album 1700" to an old reel-to-reel tape deck, which I was listening to with some friends at the pool where I had worked over the summer of 1970 as a lifeguard. It was the last days of the summer, just before labor day, very late afternoon, with the sunlight already lengthening into the yellow-tinge of fall as it set so much earlier in the day. We'd listened to the entire album - almost - which set up a mood that matched the feeling of the end of summer, friends gathered together before parting for the up-coming college school-year, happy, melancholy a bit, warm in the sun, but not hot like in July, a few people wearing very light jackets - fall was in the air - when the tape-deck broke. There was nothing I could do to get it moving again - half-way through "The Song is Love".
I'm not one to confuse coincidence with augury, but the self-destruction of the tape-deck could not have been more portentous. Afterwards we all went our separate ways, with only minor interactions for the last 49 years.
Their song has always been love. Peter,Paul and Mary raised the consciousness of millions about how liberating it is to love others and how precious our lives really are.
