Peter, Paul And Mary - The Cuckoo Lyrics

Oh the cuckoo she's a pretty bird, she sings as she flies
She never gets lonesome till the first day of July.
I've gambled in England, and I've gambled down in Spain.
I gambled with five aces, now I've gambled my last game.

Oh, it's gamblin' that's brought me prison,
And it's gamblin' that's brought me pain
I'll never see the cuckoo or hear her song again

Jack o' diamonds, jack o' diamonds, I know you of old
You robbed my poor pockets of silver and of gold.

Oh the cuckoo she's a pretty bird, she sings as she flies
She never gets lonesome till the first day of July.

The words have been changed on this recording because the original is totally different. Wonder why they changed the words? It's too slow for my taste, but they have such beautiful harmony. Just their style. Very nice.

Oh the guitars are worth mentioning too, beautiful picking.

They've stated that they don't really like using others' arrangements, and so rearrange most works they do. Often that leads to minor rewording, but sometimes major lyrical changes (see "Go Tell it on the Mountain" as a prime example).

Every reword they ever did was lavishy done and in my opinion, much better than original lyrics.
