Peter, Paul And Mary - Stewball Lyrics
Oh Stewball was a racehorse, and I wish he were mine.
He never drank water, he always drank wine.
His bridle was silver, his mane it was gold.
And the worth of his saddle has never been told.
Oh the fairgrounds were crowded, and Stewball was there
But the betting was heavy on the bay and the mare.
And a-way up yonder, ahead of them all,
Came a-prancin' and a-dancin' my noble Stewball.
I bet on the grey mare, I bet on the bay
If I'd have bet on ol' Stewball, I'd be a free man today.
Oh the hoot owl, she hollers, and the turtle dove moans.
Oh Stewball was a racehorse, and I wish he were mine.
He never drank water,he always drank wine.

Peter, Paul And Mary Stewball Comments
I have this on an early 60s EP by P, P & M. Great record. When Lennon's Xmas song was released a decade later I immediately thought of this.
What a disappointment. I thought Lennon wrote this melody.
all the great songs by peter paul & mary are available on YT but one...their version of "winkin blinkin & nod" is one of
the best but I cant find it at all...anyone know why ?
Horses of oak valley ranch anyone?
I first heard this song about 1965 at their show at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Long about 1974 they came over to my house in Hollywood to record a 30 second PSA regarding drug abuse awareness for a national radio campaign I was working on. They each recorded one and I must say, Mary Travers was one of the sweetest persons I had ever met, and I had met many people in music and recording. The radio spots went on to be played around the world and the album is now in the Library of Congress as well as other places.
based on a very old tune, from England I believe
The horse's real name was actually Sku-ball and not Stewball. Sku-ball was named after his color which was called Skewbald..which means a tricoloured horse. Sku-ball was an 18th century British race horse. He was a fine racer in his day. But, when he was 11 years old..and not racing so well by then..he was entered in a race at a fair. Another horse Griselda-Molly was favored to win..and most laid their money on her. Sku-ball was considered a long shot and only 1 or 2 betters placed their money on him. Well, an upset occurred and Sku-ball won the race.which means that the one or 2 people who had their money on old Sku-ball became very rich that day. Oh yes..old Sku-ball was a racehorse..and I wish he were mine..........
@Budder Kupp you are right thanks for the story. read it before
@jennifur sun Cool story! I love it!
was ol' stewball a Russian Missile ? He used solid fuel and won the race
"I'd be a free man today..."
And so this is stewball...
And what has he done?
Second song I learned to play with my cousin Wayne (RIP). I still play it to this day and love it more each time I play it. Peter , Paul and Mary were great
The "B" side of Puff the Magic Dragon.
Actually, no... the B-side of "Puff, The Magic Dragon" was "Pretty Mary" (1962). "Stewball" was an A-side (1963). It's B-side was "Cruel War".
Vinny ogley & travellers sung this brill r i p vinny ogley long gone na tho
This is my go to song after tunning my guitar fresh from its case
Sounds kinda familiar.
That's quite Happy Xmas (War is Over) :)
@Sooz Pink The chorus is just the same tune transposed though
