Peter, Paul And Mary - Lemon Tree Lyrics

When I was just a lad of ten, my father said to me,
"Come here and take a lesson from the lovely lemon tree."
"Don't put your faith in love, my boy", my father said to me,
"I fear you'll find that love is like the lovely lemon tree."

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.

One day beneath the lemon tree, my love and I did lie
A girl so sweet that when she smiled the stars rose in the sky.
We passed that summer lost in love beneath the lemon tree
the music of her laughter hid my father's words from me:

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.

One day she left without a word. She took away the sun.
And in the dark she left behind, I knew what she had done.
She'd left me for another, it's a common tale but true.
A sadder man but wiser now I sing these words to you:

Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet
but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat.

Can't help being the catechist that I am. ( I teach teens in Sunday School). If we wait for true love , it is so much sweeter. The lemon can deceive us. True sweetness comes when we wait for fruit to ripen.

    @Thomas Jewell , ♡ Thank you.

    K.... P....

I only realised how powerful these lyrics are.

    K.... P....

@asianpotatoe Please explain them to me.

    K.... P....

@Irish Countryman ok, this is my own interpretation (i think this is everyone's since the lyrics are quite obvious tbh), the lemon tree is characterized as a person who is very beautiful outside but terrible inside. the part "lemon tree, very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat" explains a lot about a song if you just see the lemon tree as a person not just a tree. i personally think the best part is "a sadder man but wiser now, i sing these words to you", like those who knew lot about things are the saddest bc they're being fed with real informations

    K.... P....

@asianpotatoe Thanks Alot. It makes sense.

Love the lyrics on this song.

  93. C.... ....

This seems to be the male counterpart to the song "Silver Dagger" where the mother warns the daughter never to fall in love or marry because they'll all love you and leave you, just like her father. I wonder if there's a whole genre of these beyond these two songs.

  94. N.... M....

    tender voice,sweet songs 👍👍👍👍👍👍

  95. M.... G....

It's beyond me how Trini Lopez's version could've charted higher. I mean, didn't record buyers understand that it was supposed to be a depressing song, not upbeat and cheerful?

  96. D.... C....

kyonki mere bete ke school mai ye song sikha rahe hai toh usse chahiya
