Peter, Paul And Mary - Leaving On A Jet Plane Lyrics

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye

But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn
Taxi's waiting, he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could cry

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing

Every place I go, I think of you
Every song I sing, I sing for you
When I come back, I'll wear your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Then close your eyes, I'll be on my way

Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the time, I won't have to say

Kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Leavin' on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Such a sad song and must have been a sad reality for many people off to the Vietnam war. 😢

  2. T.... M....

This song reminds me of the time that I had to work away from home and leave my wife behind, I would get the train, the railway ran past our back yard and my wife would be waiting at the window and wave as the train sped past, her eyes would be full of tears. Now, like that train she has passed on and I am left behind.with tears in my eyes.

What a song -- in my childhood and teenage years, I used to hear and sing aloud -- even after such a long time, it is relevant today --together for last fifty years my wife and I, still sing this song

Trisha, I left you at the airport in tears, we were both 18 and I was going to the army. You cut my hair at lake Eunice resort in the bar. Elsie loved it! But I left my heart with you and when I came back, you were taken.....June 20, 1974

I got married at 16, husband got his Draft notice in 1970! I moved from Ohio to Illinois and lived with his parents! I finished High School, there! Vietnam ruined my young husband! We later had a beautiful Daughter, but we never made it! Such a gentle man went there and came back so messed up! God be with those who are still alive!

1970 I was on a weekend trip with a lovely young woman 2 years my senior and 20 years wiser. We`d stolen the time from the relationships in which we were both wasting our time and were seeing how we got on.We`d visited my grandmother and Lillian was standing in a house I`d known all my life talking to my cousin,a beautiful early summer day,her beautiful face framed by her long fair hair and this was playing I thought`I`ll always remember this` and I do.

It still gives me the chills after all of these years.

  15. R.... M....

This song brings back a special memory of a girl named, Anna Stewart...........met her at a lake resort in the 1960's...Actually, my first love at such an early age...........She came to San Jose to visit me during one summer, stayed with me and my family for the weekend. Leaving on Sunday, we stopped for gas to drive her back to Oakland...this song came on the radio and she told me to "listen to the words"............at a young age, I really didn't put it together, but Anna was telling me she was leaving. Found out a month or so later after not hearing from her that she returned to her home county of Scotland. So sad that after a few months I heard of some unfortunate things that happened to her while she was visiting her uncle in Oakland. She was truly my first love and one that so many years later I still think of. A smile has come upon my face just listening to this song.

We buried a girl at our high school who was killed in a terrible car accident. At her funeral someone sang this for her. It was her favorite song. I barely knew her but the pain remains with me so many years later. I don't know why. I just remember seeing her all happy at a party and then she was gone. Just like that.

  64. O.... C....

    Love this song!

  65. T.... M....

I remember living in Auburn Australia and being out the back riding my bike alone and singing this song to myself as I rode in a circle.I must have been 9 or 10 years old. Wow, I was so full of life back then.

  75. A.... E....

The bass literally takes this song to the highest plains possible. Gut wrenching.
Then we have the vocals.......sheesh.......this is the most beautiful song ever laid down.

  76. T.... B....

My dad was on a submarine during the Vietnam war and I think about how many military men and women would hear this song and thinking it may be their last trip away from home and life as they knew it and sadly it was

  77. g.... m....

When I was 9 & my Mom was driving a friend & her daughter who'd been a good pal of mine and this song played over the car stereo Cheryl sang out the words in her clear soprano-voice, "Leavin' on a Jet-plane, Oh, buddy I hate to go........." & we, off course "being the dramatic-kids we were at the time' began crying!! My Mom consoled me on the way home, "It may be in Rochester, NY but you girls can write to one another and I'll even buy you some pretty stationary of your very own, and everything!" I felt better--for a minit.

  78. S.... R....

A song written by John Denver.

  80. C.... R....

I was 11 years old whn this beautiful song was playing on AM radio tht I listened to thn. I as a young lad always thought it was a song about an airline stewardess leaving and would be back soon. Later I realized, how for many, it was a song of young beautiful kids going off to the mistake known as Viet Nam. May God bless all who left to go thr.

  81. S.... J....

A wonderful folk group that the world will never ever see or hear again what a horrible shame and no one seems to care !!!!!!!!

  92. R.... J....

I was introduced this song to my 1st grade teacher at Our Lady of Sorrows . She was a huge fan of Peter Paul & Mary. She sang this song along with Puff the Magic Dragon. I always think of her whenever I hear this song. The older I've gotten the more it touches me. Its like the song is a final destination that you know you won't see that person ever again
