Peter, Paul And Mary - Garden Song Lyrics

Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Til the rain comes tumbling down

Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones,
we are made of dreams and bones
I feel the need to grow my own cause the time is close at hand
Grain for grain, sun and rain I'll find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain to the music of the land

Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Til the rain comes tumbling down

Plant your rows straight and long,
Temper them with prayer and song
Mother earth will keep you strong if you give her love and care
An old crow watching hungrily from his perch in yonder tree
In my garden I'm as free as that feathered thief up there

Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Til the rain comes tumbling down

My most treasured memory is meeting Mary & Noel (Paul) but unfortunately not Peter. Through the 1960s & 70s, I tried to sound like Peter Yarrow. However, after half a century we have both grown old and unfortunately Peter now sounds like me. During a concert at Festival Hall in Melbourne in about 1983, Paul broke a string and left the stage leaving Peter & Mary to improvise until he came back. Electronic tuners hadn't been invented so it took ages for Peter & Paul to get tuned up. The audience cracked up when Mary went to the microphone & said "NEXT TIME I WILL BRING A HARP & HAVE HALF AN HOUR OF MY OWN TUNING".

Mary is still here as long as you remember and share .Mary is one of the coolest grandmothers this world has ever known.

I'm not sure all of us understand this song presented by Arlo Guthrie the way he meant it to be understood. He was arguing against sameness all over the world. We each have our own particular culture. We should not change it to be uniform. You can't solve problems kilometer by kilometer. We have to solve our problems the way we started them: inch by inch. That young 20-year-old Canadian in the story failed to understand our history: the uniqueness of each culture.

  7. E.... S....

John Denvers recording of this actually made the charts...cool huh?

  8. r.... c....

When they harmonized, the world was a much better place.

Its great to see kids get involved with this song

  14. T.... B....

What I love about this song of PPM is all the kids singing along..... it is ther'e world to inherit.... it will be the world that they make of it. I'm a old fart now.....62.. but I've spent most of my life as an environmental scientist, an ecologist......... Climate change is REAL. Trump is ignorant at best... most likely a social path ......an very dangerous!!! Pray for peace, an pray for the earth :)

Mary passed on. they were just wonderful true singers

  17. h.... ....

Dick Kniss, we loved you too. What an understated, underappreciated gem you were for all those years.

I love this song.... been a BIG fan of Peter Paul And Mary since I was 8 years old. Now 31 yrs old. Met All 3 members in person at Ravinia in Chicago IL. signed autogrph cds and a picture taken with PETER in 1996.... plus a personal letter from Peter in 1993... Can someone please upload PP&Mommy Too : "It's Raining" PBS 1993.. Have A Great Day Everyone... Blessings All.

    J.... F....

oh my gosh at Ravinia it's been so long ago I had forgotten all about it thanks for bringing back that memory

    J.... F....

Jeremy Ferrantelli ... that’s good for you ^_^. I know them from very young too (I’m the same age as you) but never have opportunity to meet them in person. I’m from far away country. I can follow them more just last 10 years. At least, all clips and comments made me feel I have a lot of friends who love this group as same as me.

  23. D.... C....

At 3:45, Noel hums to the end of the song while playing the guitar.

  24. h.... ....

at work, I'm the miserable s.o.b. who sees the negative side of everything. I get excluded from meetings and nobody invites me to lunch because I'm so ornery.I wonder what my co-workers would think if they saw me get all teary-eyed EVERY TIME I hear PP&M do Garden Song or Puff.

    h.... ....

I think they'd smile and you might get invited to the things you had hoped to avoid ;-)

    h.... ....

    Love your comment.

    h.... ....

This comment could have been written by my father who passed away 4 months ago. He was hard and crusty on the outside and soft and tender on the inside.

  25. K.... ....

I too miss Mary. I love this song and I miss seeing them in concert.

  26. S.... G....

I love this PBS Concert & I wish that someday they would transfer it from VHS to DVD ...

  27. B.... B....

I miss Mary Travers terribly. I grew up listening to their album, "A Holiday Celebration". It was a family tradition..Even today at almost 29 years old, I literally don't feel like it's Christmas until I hear all those songs from beginning to end at least once

    B.... B....

I mss Mary Travers and group. Their music carried on the tradition started by The Almanac singers, Pete Seeger and the Weavers. Listening to rhem kept me grounded

    B.... B....

Christmas starts tomorrow for me (1st December) when I play Children Go Where I Send Thee from that CD. Just so inspirational. Happy Christmas to you and yours!

  28. M.... M....

i still miss mary travers <3
