I sang this song when I was 3 years old. I thank my mother for her impeccable taste in music. That's why I can "hear" Django Reinhart and Chet Baker now.....

I use to sing this while performing with my father on the Tops In Blue circuit back in the 50's when he was in the Air Force. Father and son act from 1955-64.

Fantastic! Grew up with this song, Dad used to sing it to me/ with me, on car trips. Listened to the (original) Elizabeth Cotten version and wondered why Dad's lyrics were so different! He sings the Peter, Paul and Mary version.

@GabZonY Far superior to Elizabeth Cotten's version? Who actually wrote the song in her teens? Any subsequent version is a knockoff of the original.

@Samuel Lim999 yeah, and the covers are better than her recording is all im saying. she made the song, others recorded superior versions of it.

This is just perfection. I saw them twice, and they were brilliant.

one of my brothers was lucky to see them fairly early on...we were stationed US navy in yokosuka japan. My brother used the japanese trains system and probably likely the concert m ight have been at Tokyo which isn't super far from yokosuka. This would have been something 1969 or so . cannot imagine how thrilling it would be now to have that direct memory RIP mary dearest
