Peter Gabriel - That'll Do Lyrics

A kind and steady heart can make a grey sky blue
And a task that seems impossible, is quite possible for you

A kind and steady heart, is sure to see you through
It may not seem like very much right now
It'll do, it'll do
When you find yourself in the middle of a storm
And you're tired and cold and wet
And you're looking for a place that's cozy and warm
You'll make it; you can never forget!

A kind and steady heart, can conquer doubt and fear
A little courage goes a long, long way
Gets you a little bit farther down the road each day
And before you know it, you'll hear someone say
"That'll do, Babe, that'll do"

A kind and steady heart, is sure to see you through
A little courage goes a long, long way
Gets you a little bit farther down the road each day
And before you know it, you'll hear someone say
"That'll do, that'll do, that'll do, Babe, that'll do

Beautiful...just beautiful. I heard this version in a tribute to dear Terry Wogan when he died. Stayed with me ever since. Beautiful. Thanks Peter.

Achingly brilliant writing, arrangement, and performance...

  4. M.... O....

Peter’s 1999 Oscar performance sent me here. I only saw the original Babe and not the sequel. But this song is a beautiful tearjerker! The message is something we all need today. Me an autistic 26 year old still living with my parents. But I still got a long way to go to declare my independence! And the lyrics deeply express comfort and hope. Kudos to Randy Newman

I rewatched the Babe films recently and totally forgot about this song. It's a masterclass in writing and performing a song! Thanks for sharing 👍

    M.... ....

Morrismusicpete I only saw the original but not the sequel. The first time I saw the original was as a 17 year old high school sophomore in need of anything 90’s I missed out in my early youth. I’m 26 now

  22. L.... B....

    For my Terry

  23. M.... ....

    gravity falls brought me here

  24. M.... a....

I have had to pull over on the motorway more than once when this comes on. It's the combination of pipes, brass band, Peter Gabriel's voice and the wonderful lyrics. I was driving home after one of my grandchildren was born, and it absolutely finished me. Definitely one of my Desert Island Discs - like Terry - as we all need a good cry sometimes.

babe pig in the city is underrated period

    M.... ....

Both Siskel and Ebert picked it as the best picture of that particular year (1999)

    M.... ....

MrGabeanator I only saw the original. I didn’t see the sequel because I heard it wasn’t as great as the original.

    M.... ....

Both movies are beautiful and deeply moving. <3

  31. S.... N....

I loved Terry on radio......I still feel that his death was..well......strangely quick and unannounced. Did he know too much about the Savile-controlled BBC?

  32. s.... n....

You couldn't have know... but how lovely this is in 2017, in the US. Thanks so very much, @Peter Garbriel. <3

  33. N.... n....

Heard this on the Ken Bruce Show on BBC Radio2 as a tribute to Terry Wogan, wow thought I knew P Gabriels music but this changes this my thoughts on this track,to all the TOGGS.

  34. M.... B....

The brass band gets me everytime

    M.... B....

me too! Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!! :)

  35. T.... D....

Listening to Ken Bruce this morning (31 Jan 2017) he mentioned that it's now one year since the fabulous broadcaster Terry Wogan passed on. In memory and tribute to the great man he played Peter's rendition of this beautiful song. So lovely.

Thanks to Terry Wogan for years of fun and laughter. And thanks to Peter, and the Black Dyke Mills Band for their backing, on this exceptional piece of music. And thanks of course to Ken Bruce for taking the time to pay his respects to our broadcasting legend one year on. :-)

    T.... D....

I nearly had to come off the M5 when this song came on Radio 2 earlier- not a good idea to drive with tears in your eyes. A beautiful song for a beautiful human being

    T.... D....

Me and my mum where in the same position

  36. J.... F....

This could have been written for Sir Terry, the words are so pertinent. In my humble opinion, this should be re-released in memory of Terry as, I don't think it has ever been released as a single on CD. However, if you want a CD version, I believe it is available as the soundtrack for the film, Babe Pig in The City - if you can find it!

  37. d.... j....

just for those wogan fans out there type wake up to wogan in you tube and there is an abundance of podcasts to listen to , so as all we togs get a little tired pop upstairs for that crafty mid afternoon power nap log in and press play, and realise he have left us but he hasnt gone ,now sleep tight and rest in peace.
i can recommend "random radio jottings"

  38. J.... w....

Sir Tel used to play this a lot, I've always loved it. RIP Sir Tel, you were such a beautiful human being....

  39. d.... ....

Sang live by Peter at the Service of Thanksgiving for the Life and Work of SIR Terry Wogan yesterday. Very fitting and one of his favourite songs.

  40. J.... G....

God Bless you Terry Wogan and RIP. This was one of his favourites. I miss his gentle humour, his jokey reviews of the previous night's tv, the wonderful Janet and John stories he read out, some of which made me have to pull the car over from laughing so much. There'll never be anyone like him again and he's still very much missed.

    J.... G....

The BBC had cameras throughout the Abbey filming the event, and I watched it back on here once.  Since then I have been unable to rediscover it, but I suspect that if you wrote to the BBC they may be able to provide you with a copy.

    J.... G....

poor ol T Wog i loved him x

    J.... G....

Loved him too, but he wouldn't appreciate 'poor Terry' and he was never old. He said he couldn't see himself as an old man and he was right. Some are old in their twenties, some never grow old. What a man he was. Finest kind of person. This does indeed bring back special memories and God bless Peter Gabriel for such a performance on such a day. Top man.

    J.... G....

Julia Guelmouss you are spot on Julia. I miss him a lot.

    J.... G....

Julia. I think you’ve summed up exactly how everyone here feels. He was always Dear old Terry. What a lovely gentleman and what a star. I miss him very much and this beautiful song always makes me smile and feel sad at the same time. I just can’t watch the service, it’s all too upsetting. Is it me?

  41. E.... E....

Peter Gabriel sang this today at STW's memorial service, a lot of tears shed.

    E.... E....

Elaine Evans , where can I buy this, it's not available on iTunes?

    E.... E....

You can download it from the YouTube video and convert it using http://www.youtube-mp3.org/

  42. H.... D....

Babe the pig in the city?

    H.... D....

Babe the gallant pig! Babe in city quite different but still excellent!

  43. M.... ....

    Oscar nod deserved

  44. E.... S....

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever. So gentle and soft - with warm wisdom. Should have won the Oscar for best song. Pete's rendering is perfect. Anyone doubting their self should listen carefully to this delicate gem.

  45. B.... S....

[I know this is late but I work abroad without internet]
Lovely, lovely comments about our Tel. What lovely people you all are and what a wonderful man Terry was. RIP Tel. I miss you every day.

  46. D.... H....

Has Peter Gabriel dropped this brilliant song championed by Sir Terry Wogan for some silly reason?

    D.... H....

I had to buy a cd from the states, please Peter do it again for Terry

  47. M.... ....

Our lovely son Mark Benson surely. . . had that "kind and steady heart " At 48 in Topanga Canyon he died of cancer, but during those last months he worked himself to death to make sure that his house and garden would be in good order for his family after he was gone. I found several places where he had just quit a job and there were his tools, gloves, and the cushions he had been kneeling on. Till the end. . . what a son ! we are SO proud of him doing all that and knowing all the time that it was terminal. . . He COULD make a grey sky blue. . . and still does. God , we miss him. This is our song for the lovely person he was.. . Marxdad

    M.... ....

    Love this song❣️❣️❣️❣️😍

    M.... ....

    Bless you, sir.

  48. d.... j....

I still miss terry wogan and this is not helping . Rip terry wogan

  49. R.... A....

Dear Terry Wogan loved this song (I miss him so much) it was one of his records on Desert Island Discs, and now I am in tears again, xx

  50. C.... ....

A truly beautiful song. Thanks for sharing.

  51. p.... a....

    That,ll do..

  52. D.... H....

Breathtaking piece, written by a genius and sung by a voice akin to fine brandy. I'm relieved to hear that its not only me forced in to the side of the road to listen (Linda Christie and others, thanks !) - I first heard this over 12 years ago and it never fails to lift the spirit. Don't be sad Miss Christie, your Mum would be proud of you playing this. 8-) Well done Black Dyke too.

  53. g.... ....

I had never heard this song or watched Babe but Richard Madeley played it in relation to the death of Sir Terry Wogan. I was driving and had to stop, I was in tears.  one of his favourites songs and a fitting tribute to a great man.

  54. a.... f....

Thanks terry cos its the first time ive heard this amazing song!

  55. L.... ....

God bless you Terry Wogan. A sad day but a beautiful song to remember you by xx

    L.... ....

    +LNR well said

    L.... ....

Sweet comment, we all miss him x

  56. s.... ....

Apparently, this was one of Terry Wogans favourite songs. Terry died today, and I think it's a pretty fitting swansong; the instruments played relate to the man and his life and the simple phrase 'that'll do' is perfect. Old Tel gave it his best, and... it was good enough. His dry wit will be sorely missed. Rest well old friend.

  57. J.... M....

I burst out in tears after hearing this after 12 long years of missing this movie...the feels, man...

  58. j.... l....

I sob like a sobbing thing at the intro; every time.

  59. T.... ....

That'll do Charlie Brown, that'll do.

    T.... ....

    TPDManiacXC626 Perfect

  60. J.... G....

When was this recorded? I love Randy Newman. Oh... Babe soundtrack.

    J.... G....

+Julie Gustafson If I'm not mistaken, "That'll Do" was recorded in 1998. :)

    J.... G....

The movie was dated 1995 on Wikipedia so wouldn't the song date from then?

    J.... G....

this is from "babe pig in the city" 1998
    not "babe" 1995
    you're welcome ;)

  61. F.... N....

Gorgeous. What writing, what a singer; what a band. *sigh*

  62. t.... s....

never fails to make me thing

  63. J.... B....

    That'll do pig, that'll do.

  64. M.... Z....

Peter Gabriel could sing the alphabet, and I'd listen. There's something about an artist who feels the music, as well as, sings the music that make me fulfilled.

    M.... Z....

You could literally reach out and touch his feelings in his rendering of this song. Nothing false or pretentious.

    M.... Z....

i'm surprised he's never been on sesame street

  65. M.... ....

    nice song

  66. R.... ....

This will be at my great granny's funeral :,|

  67. R.... G....

    A great Marshall Hymn.

  68. F.... B....

Does Randy Newman even KNOW how to write a bad song? Brilliant.

    F.... B....

    @MrGabeanator I was kidding about 1D...

    F.... B....

    ok good

    F.... B....

@Elaine Snow I love the two you mentioned plus I think it's going to rain today and I'll always remember Marie

    F.... B....

Frank Burns no, but I will look out for it. “When she loved me” could be applied to almost any type of relationship - after you’ve served your usefulness to someone, some people will just toss you aside in hopes for something better. Sad.

    F.... B....

Don Blackburn perfection, all of them

  69. J.... E....

It's songs like this that make living purposefull.

  70. d.... ....

I love this song....and it couldn't be performed better.

    d.... ....

    donwoodswirral heck yeah

    d.... ....

hardly surprising given he composed it

  71. t.... ....

The kind of song you would expect Peter Skellern to record. Maybe he already has ??

    This is nice though.

    t.... ....

+tyreburster The first time I heard this I thought it might be Peter Skellern because of the brass band.
