Peter Gabriel - I Have The Touch Lyrics

The time I like is the rush hour, cos I like the rush
The pushing of the people - I like it all so much
Such a mass of motion - do not know where it goes
I move with the movement and ... I have the touch

I'm waiting for ignition, I'm looking for a spark
Any chance collision and I light up in the dark
There you stand before me, all that fur and all that hair
Oh, do I dare ... I have the touch

Wanting contact
I'm wanting contact
I'm wanting contact with you
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Give me the thing I understand
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Shake those hands, shake those hands

Any social occasion, it's hello, how do you do
All those introductions, I never miss my cue
So before a question, so before a doubt
My hand moves out and ... I have the touch

Wanting contact
I'm wanting contact
I'm wanting contact with you
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Give me the thing I understand
Shake those hands, shake those hands

Pull my chin, stroke my hair, scratch my nose, hug my knees
Try drink, food, cigarette, tension will not ease
I tap my fingers, fold my arms, breathe in deep, cross my legs
Shrug my shoulders, stretch my back - but nothing seems
to please

I need contact
I need contact
Nothing seems to please
I need contact

I saw this show live in Kalamazoo Michigan second row center.
Awesome brillianceand yes the unforgettable drum track on rhythm of The heat.

  3. C.... A....

All the world contact with people mostly fake isn't enough for a reassured humanity.
Everyone needing companionship should either get married or get a dog.

  4. l.... ....

just play this for me and i will feel quite zippy immediately 👍

Heather Nova version is amazing too ❤

  7. a.... w....

The Rhythm of the Heat. Number 1. And of course Peter Gabriel 4.

  8. L.... ....

This is so ahead of it's time, it sounds like it was made in the late 90s, not 1982.

  9. D.... B....

Que de bons et beaux souvenirs, merci Peter Gabriel pour tout ce que vous m'avez apportés...!

  10. C.... G....

Wow the Heather Nova version is 1000X better. This just hurt my ears and my mind. I felt like I was under sensory attack 😂 I won't be repeating.

    C.... G....

???? You better go see a Doctor

  11. G.... F....

Every time I listen to this song, I sense the endless motion of the great sea of humanity; all of our potential, our constant growth and unending drive to seek answers to the most perplexing mysteries of our existence.

As a culture, we're always moving forward, constantly shifting and evolving. We're not always the wisest of species, but even when we are at our lowest, and the world is tearing itself apart around us, we always find some way to come together to celebrate our eternal journey as one interconnected 'human family'.

The rhythm of this incredible song captures that energy perfectly. I will always and forever recommend this song for anyone that wants to rediscover that sense of wonder that we call the human condition.

  12. P.... ....

Man that was a different time

  13. G.... Y....

This song simply rings true to my personality. I don't believe in strangers as a stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet. Im a total extrovert and consistently start conversations with total strangers in line at McDonalds, Krogers or wherever. Just open your mouth and express yourself is how I live day to day.

  14. G.... A....

What sort of creature is this on the cover ? It resembles something from the game of Dungeons & Dragons! Cool though 👍😎

Uh, yeah, he's brilliant. But how many of us will understand? He channeled spirits. He didn't even understand the totality.

I really love the song from Peter Gabriel's I Have the Touch! Another classic song!

  21. A.... J....

Anyone know what the album cover is a photo of? Obviously it looks like a weird face but I'm wondering what it actually is.

  22. M.... B....

The picture of the album is so strange. What is suppose to be?

I think it's called a Totem Pole. Indigenous peoples would pay tribute to their Gods this way.

  24. S.... M....

Peter's music is always unique and great. Very ahead of his time.

  28. M.... K....

First heard this in the '87 Keith Gordon film The Chocolate War. Great film about a secret club for boys at a Catholic private school and the mind games and evil that happens by the members and the interim headmaster, Brother Leon. Cult classic.

  29. h.... ....

I really feel he had a fucking blast recording this record. What a song!

  30. J.... S....

Best song ever! Wanted to hear this for a long time!

  31. T.... m....

No way around it, absolutely genius.

  32. L.... L....

HA HA HA HAHA. After having this (Security) for many years on cassette tape I found a CD at a yard sale. The lady said it was weird... she gave it to me. I played it for my kids (ages 5 & 3); they loved it. Jumping, leaping, screaming, laughing. Thanks Peter.

    L.... L....

    That is so awesome!

A message to Peter Gabtiel. For some reason, your music reflected the friendship I was very lucky to have with my father. Obviously, I think you're brilliant. My mother, Eva, was a holocaust survivor and I treasure the tours you've done separately and apart with Sting on behalf of Amnesty International. I also cared deeply about Tom Petty's music and will always miss him. I am glad you are in the world.

    e.... b....

I find he's like that, how is it so many are not aware of Peter's albums.?

    e.... b....

    evelyn baron Who cares?

  36. A.... ....

I have this album (most recent remaster on 180g vinyl).

Blows my fucking mind every time I play it.

  37. A.... ....

12 people don't have the touch

  38. j.... b....

i need to break out the LP again. Forgot how much i loved this song

  39. J.... M....

It's interesting how Peter Gabriel completely embraced "new wave" and electronic elements, which forced old Genesisto consider re-examine what it means to be musically expressive. Gabriel stripped things down to their bare essence in a kind of primal, nativist way, almost like something you'd see a group of aboriginal peoples singing in a tribal chant. No sound or beat more than what's' needed to communicate the message.

    J.... M....

And, beyond that, it's just a damn brilliant pop tune on the level of the Lennon-McCartney greats.

    J.... M....

Not one cymbal. Makes you listen to the drums/beat and highlight the lyrics.

    J.... M....

@Scott Macleod there are cymbals on this record...

  40. S.... S....

    Ten people haven't touch!

  41. S.... S....

    The best! I love him!!

  42. C.... A....

I love this song.i first heard it on the chocolate war film .

  43. l.... ....

9 people are out of touch.

  44. J.... H....

this is one of the best songs ive ever heard.

  45. Z.... M....

I prefer the 1983 version since I heard it first bit this is still an awesome song!

    Z.... M....

Agreed! The 83 version just flows better and better bass

  46. E.... J....

    This song is sooooooooo good

  47. k.... j....

This is awesome in vinyl on an analog stereo-system!

  48. R.... ....

    TENSION WILL NOT EASE!!!!!!

  49. P.... D....

it's right at 3:38 the way that synthesizer screams and that percussion is just slamming...this moment is a reminder why this is one of the greatest albums ever made. "I NEED CONTACT!"

  50. R.... S....

Original and best version. Remixes and covers don't come close to this.

    R.... S....

I really like this one too.

    R.... S....

Roo Stercogburn I personally like the one used on Shaking the Tree better, probably cause I heard that one first

    R.... S....

I feel the same, each cover and remix was a disappointment and diminishment of the original.

    R.... S....

    Do they ever?

    R.... S....

The best one is in the live album 'Peter Gabriel plays live'

  51. a.... ....

This is an amazing album. I was blown away when it came out, and listening to it after all these years I am just as impressed. "I Have The Touch-" is one of my favorites - very powerful. (Shock the Monkey is of course on the greatest songs from the 80s, and one the greatest videos as well).

  52. R.... ....

    Top tune

  53. N.... T....

Love it! Love it! Love it! The original version is the best!! 😁😁☺

  54. S.... A....

(sigh) Ok for everybody who says 'Genesis died when....' The irony is not missed (by me at least) that one or the other was taking HUGE sonic cues based on what the other was doing....

    S.... A....

SDG All Day Both phil and peter came up with the drum sound on peters 3 album.

  55. A.... C....

    A true man of peace

  56. p.... k....

    oh my...I sure NEED contact!

  57. P.... X....

Great song... this is the original cut, right? When I did my cover, I used the Robbie Robertson Mix!
Since you're a Genesis fan, I'd love your opinion of what I did...if you don't mind me asking! :-)

    P.... X....

I've always loved this album, my friend. Check out the "Plays live " version. And don't forget to check out the movie "Birdy":). I dig your cover but you already know that.

  58. I.... ....

One of the 10 greatest albums ever made.

    I.... ....

Klaa2 The third one wasn’t bad either. This one is ok, but his sound got a little too electronic on it for my tastes. That was the problem with so many music acts in the 80’s- their music became more and more reliant on drum machines, synthesizers, and over-production with each successive album. Everything sounded so robotic, computerized and inhuman. The same thing is happening in the musical world today- only worse, because now it’s affected the “alternative” scene as well.

    I.... ....

Of course in 10's, 7-9 place.

    I.... ....

@crescentfreshbret But the thing about the drum machines is Gabriel was the one who envisioned it with the help of his producer and of course Phil Collins 😅

    I.... ....

@artur wojciechowicz Peter Gabriel's I have the touch is one of my favorite songs

    I.... ....

@Brandon Moore The heat is in my blood , it's in my soul , how can I throw it away.

  59. R.... R....

    Chocolate war anyone

  60. S.... K....

He has such an amazing voice!!

  61. G.... W....

    Awesome song!!!

  62. L.... B....

Hug my knees, nothing seems to please. I need contact.  PG

  63. P.... K....

    Shake those hands!!!

  64. L.... A....

Doesn't it chap your hide when somebody intervenes with your postings makes you want to go out reach out and touch somebody, just like AT&T use to see!

  65. t.... ....

Thereare two remixes -- one from 1983 or 1985), and one from 1996 that Robbie Robertson helped with I put those and this in my "Gabriel 82-85" playlist, Thanks for the upload!~

  66. L.... H....

Fave Peter Gabriel song. I wish he would tour once more.

  67. D.... R....

I saw this tour and it was the best show I ever witnessed.

  68. J.... J....

I will admit the first time hearing this song, was a cover on the credits on 'The Craft' I had no idea, it was a cover.

  69. W.... M....

LOVE Peter Gabriel and THIS is my favorite from his solo period. Tony Levin's stick work is brilliant as usual. I especially love the whimsical keyboard flourishes. The big dramatic ride-out at the end still works. However, the dry, synthetic, gated drum sound. BIG NO!!! Those fake CGI drums - blecchhhh. As a drummer I think this is everything that made me HATE 'music' of the 80's. Plus it dates a great piece of music and not in a good way. That aside, this is a masterpiece.

    W.... M....

See, I actually love synth drumming, possibly more than actual drumming. Which is probably why I love '80s music so much. :P

    W.... M....

the drum machine wasa thing, that was all. Fairlights, etc... Just a thing to do at the time

    W.... M....

I think the drums have aged surprisingly well. The snare sound is very much of its time but the thudda-thudda-thudda pattern still sounds awesome.

    W.... M....

I think the drums sound great in this context, the highly digitized sound gives them a creepy, unsettling edge. The realistic drums and reverb from the remix takes away from this tight, sonically claustrophobic song. There are 80s bands who really abuse gated snares, but it doesn't necessarily date them unless they just used the digital drums to sound pop-y

    W.... M....

I hear you, and art is subjective and all that, but this song is perfect.

    It doesn’t need anything.

  70. C.... D....

    Always the best!

  71. S.... I....

    Awesome 80's 1982

  72. F.... W....

    Incredible, fantastic Album

  73. J.... S....

@ 3:16 is where the song gets really in depth....

    J.... S....

    My favorite part

    J.... S....

I had not considered that , but i do now and cannot challenge your statement
    Thank You for the "enlightenment"

  74. F.... ....

Those drums sound so fucking good.

    F.... ....

He invented those drums. Him and Phil; for the "Melt" album.

    F.... ....

    Simon Phillips is amazing

    F.... ....

Agreed, Simon Phillips IS amazing, but this is Jerry Marotta playing on this original version. SP plays on the '85 Remix.

    F.... ....

    Flashpoint922 No doubt!!

    F.... ....

George David It was first created by accident when recording "Intruder" from Melt. Right story, wrong song
