Peter Gabriel - Biko Lyrics
September '77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead
When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead
And the eyes of the world are
watching now
watching now

AM I right?
Hauntingly beautiful and sad!
One of the most powerful songs of all time.
Soon as Peter says -"This song is written for a very brave man..." the audience *gasps* applauds.

It's 2020! Make no mistake folks, a vote for any of the candidates in the Establishment Democrats aka #votebluenomatterwho camp means EVEN MORE injustice all across the world! Our leaders are not just allowing it, they are helping it, and in countries like Israel, they are funding it with tax payer dollars! Biden Clinton Warren & Trump are all pro war!
It's 2020 and our CIA has been guilty of causing terrorism to thrive, killing legally elected officials in countries where American corporations want to fleece resources so they commit coups, and even Obama is guilty of killing women and children in the middle east with drones destroying schools and hospitals with people inside them!
Oh mon DIEU
The most powerfull anti-racist song ever!!!
Thank you Peter Gabriel for your true word of racism.
And God Bless and rest in peace to the great Biko! 🕯🙏

Please caption your videos... people who are losing their hearing lose the ability to hear voices but can still hear music... if we can read the lyrics we can continue to enjoy music even while losing hearing... please caption your work so we can still enjoy it!
It’s my understanding that Biko probably wouldn’t have liked this because he didn’t want white liberals fighting his battles ...
His voice is amazing. This effortless surge of immeasurable strength and power.
His passion and anger are palatable. Thus, making the song align with your astute comment.

you guys rock
I first came across the song in Miami Vice. Later look into its history and meaning. Soulful performance as ever from Peter.
"Livrez les blanches au Biko" comme le chante si bien Jean-Louis Costes
Oh Mann ist das nicht ein Wahnsinn 😜 Weltklasse 😎🔥🔥🔥🧨⚡️😜
One thousand racist pigs came by. Fuck you.
Amazing song: very deep meaning - W Steve Biko great Peter Gabriel.
Beautiful song!
Antiapartheid hero and martyr Steve Biko: “The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”
Don’t let anyone to enslave your mind, don’t let anyone to intimidate you, we live too little in order to allow anyone to do this to us!
WAR AND SO FORTH IS A REPERCUSSION OF SIN
GASLIGHTING IS MEAN AND TOO MUCH ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Time has made a farce of this song. South African Blacks were oppressed by the Whites. Now South African Blacks kill the Whites. An old wrong replaced with a new wrong. Human nature knows no color. It is what it is ... regardless of color ... evil by nature.
Can somebody tell me, who, or what is Hiromaja in this song?
I’m not up on this story, what happened
💪🏼
One of the greatest songs Peter Gabriel ever recorded
I remember when he performed this on the MTV music awards, Peter Gabrielle cried on National television as he sang this. My daughter was about 7 she asked what happened and told her they killed him for what he believed and his skin color, without missing a beat, my baby just looked at me, and said daddy, that's not fair. I had a hard time, explaining prejudice and hate to that baby.

This song makes me want to cry . I’m trying not to cry.

Peter Gabriel writing, singing this song is in no small part just as heroic.
There's a saying "If someone doesn't like your political views and throws into a freezing river you struggle, do your best to not drown.
But if a man is in his warm house and see's you drowning in that river and jumps in to try to save you. Doesn't it take at least as much courage? Probably more. Peter Gabriel was ban from playing in South Africa for that song.
I am friends with his son Samora - and a nicer man you cannot meet. Hard to imagine that the tragedy that happened to his family, did not make him hate all white people because of the narrow minded views of some.

The song was released by 1980, but only allowed for airplay by 1990 in S.A
In Venezuela we have severals new Bikos only in 2018-2019:

I think that most who live in America who claim "African-American" have no clue about this man's sacrifice. It's a tragic loss in history . I'm Native American Indian and believe you should know all you can about your past elders. Learn the truth not what the government teaches you !!

I hope we won't have to hear a song like this about Assange. He's still unlawfully jailed people!
Few musicians have written songs as intense or as soul stirring as Peter Gabriel has. This particular song’s impact proves that point quite well.
I had never hears of Steven Biko till this song came out,
Steve Biko was killed under torture 12th September in 1977 by the South African apartheid regime. Biko was the leader of the SA Black Consciousness Movement, and co-founder of the SA Students' Association, he was 31 years old when he was murdered. During the international boycott of the apartheid regime, israel was the only country who refused to comply, and supplied the racist South African government with weapons, eavesdropping devices and other supplies. RIP
RIP, Steve Biko. You didn't let Apartheid stop you from being who were.
RIP Steven Biko we need to learn and teach equality and peace we are all in this together whether we like it or not.
Today 12 September 1977 Steven Biko was killed
Today is 12 September 2019. I honour my fellow countrymen and women, and I honour Steven Biko - “It is better to die for an idea that will live, than to live for an idea that will die” ...
I wonder if Springsteen, Matthews or Gabriel will sing for the white farmers murdered by barbarians every day in SA.
"What's your name #Kaffer"
Good riddance to #SteveBiko
Show 👏👏👏👏😍
Ein Lied super toll gemacht aber sehr sehr traurig und brutal muss man aber unbedingt ansehen
Yihla Moja!!!
This video doesn't look like a 1980 video to me, and it features clips from the film starring Kevin Kline, Cry Freedom, which was released in 1987. Was there an official video for the original 1980 release of the song?
Thank you Peter and black soul bantu biko we still here is South Africa where u left us they have created system to put us down now... Even our own black leaders are putting us down.. We friends with young white kids they don't know Nun bwt hate we trying hope you looking over us black soul
