Pete Townshend - Getting In Tune Lyrics

I'm singing this note
'Cause it fits in well with the chords I'm playing
I can't pretend there's any meaning hidden
In the things I'm saying
But I'm in tune
Right in tune
I'm in tune
And I'm gonna tune
Right in on you
Right in on you
Right in on you

I get a little tired of having to say
'Do you come here often'
When I look in your eyes
I see the harmony
And the heartaches soften
I'm getting in tune
Right in tune
I'm in tune
And I'm gonna tune
Right in on you
Right in on you

I've got it all here in my head
There's nothing more needs to be said
I'm just banging on the old piano
Getting in tune to the straight and narrow

I'm singing this song
'Cause it fits in well with the way I'm feeling
There's a symphony that I hear in your heart
Sets my head a reeling
I'm in tune
Right in tune
I'm in tune
...

I've got it all here in my head
There's nothing more needs to be said
I'm just banging on the old piano
I'm getting in tune to the straight and narrow
...

Pete Townshend Getting In Tune Comments

Thank you for posting these demos. It’s tells such another story...Pete is obviously a visionary, a musical genius and innovator but it also proves that he just had a knack for writing songs for Rogers voice. Or at least it seems this way to me. Lol

I believe Pete is playing all the instruments during these demo sessions too, which is pretty cool as he is a decent drummer as well as pianist and bass player.

I think that John, Keith and Roger just knew how to make what Pete created and then make It their own.

The Who is definitely the greatest band to see live and like fine wine got better with age.

When they lost Keith, they lost a lot! I feel Simon Philips and Kenny Jones were ok but it was definitely lacking the essence of Keith. When Zac became part of the band not only did it become full circle ( as Keith I believe bought Zac his first drum kit, this is what I have heard at least) I felt it was as close to Keith as we would ever get! However there is a nyc drummer who would fill those shoes even better than Zac and I’ll post a link to him playing

When John passed The Who would never be the same. They are still great and fun to watch live but without John they needed to have a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a piano and keyboards to fill the sound John did with his bass

They were a group of four men and in their own right all the leaders of the band. If that make any kind of sense.

Again thank you for posting this as I want to be able to show a young songwriter how it goes from demo to finished product. Even those these demos to me are already finished products, in their own right.

    Cheers

Just listen to the drummer and realize this is being filmed with a iPhone and not through a board.

What makes Richard Debonis such a great drummer ( FYI: self taught too) is his ability to rock out but also swing.

Here he takes the classic Led Zeppelin song ‘Moby Dick’ and puts a jazz twist on it.

    Enjoy

Pete is a genius composer. He’s got a good voice for when he’s singing softer but the reign of power easily goes to Daltrey. But it’s incomparable because this and the who’s version are technically completely different.
This is simply because Keith, John & Roger where all best at what they did so you can’t really compare it in an apposing manor, it’s like apples to oranges.

Is Pete playing all the instruments on these demos?

    W.... I....

Yes every single instrument every single everything is all Pete Townsend every note every instrument all of it

    W.... I....

Yes it's a demo of course he is playing all the instruments...then the Who would get it and presto a classic Who " tune"

I've always liked some of Pete's demos more than the Lifehouse songs recorded by The Who. Good job putting them up.

Now just find me the rest of the video from Sadler's Wells and I'll love you forever.
