Pete Townshend - And I Moved Lyrics

And I moved
As I saw him looking in through my window
His eyes were silent lies
And I moved
And I saw him standing in the doorway
His figure merely filled the space
And I moved
But I moved toward him

And I moved
And his hands felt like ice exciting
As he laid me back just like an empty dress
And I moved
But a minute later, he was weeping
His tears, his only truth
And I moved
But I moved toward him

I moved toward him

  34. G.... K....

Saludos.

Unusual subject matter...but he makes it work. This album defies description and still
sounds new and unique almost 40 years later. I remember many years ago when Pete
was on Letterman...he came out to a huge ovation that went on and on. After 2 or 3
minutes, he shook Dave's hand and sat down. The cheering and clapping continued as
Pete again waved at the crowd. Dave asked "How are you, Pete" there was no response.
Pete nodded and waved at the crowd yet again. "Hey Pete, how are you"...again no
response. Dave then taps Pete on the shoulder a finally gets his attention. "Oh, hi Dave,
it's great to be here" he says. Dave asks (loudly) "How's your hearing these days?". Pete
responds "Not as good as it used to be...not quite sure how that happened". Love it!

    S.... L....

It's a great album with few weak spots. And do I agree, it sounds fresh, not dated as the first 3 Who album.

There are absolutely brilliant songs on all his first 4 solos that got widely unrecognised. This here was meant for Bette Middler, I am certain with her name it had become a world hit.

  39. w.... ....

Pete's exquisitely stark scoring bathes us in the furtive cries of his confession, his erotic guilt extinguished like melting candles standing sentinel without scarring.

Could it be about the grim reaper? Just wondering...

    a.... ....

Why not? I read it as a homosexual encounter, but that's just the repressed straight side of me. I think it's an interesting theory. One of the best things he's ever written, and that includes The Who, that's for sure.

    a.... ....

'One of the best things he's ever written, and that includes The Who, that's for sure."
it's a magnificent song, no doubt. beautiful piano work.
    "Why not? " " I think it's an interesting theory. "
yeah, the imagination is fun but i'm pretty sure death doesn't molest you and break down crying if he's there to take you away.
"I read it as a homosexual encounter, "
so,you DO agree that's what this is about? why are you putzing around with this theory then?
"but that's just the repressed straight side of me."
    what?!

    a.... ....

You haven't answered the question with any of this. "no." Why not? Why not the Grim Reaper? Don't worry about me and my repressed homosexuality. I won't take it out on anyone. Promise.

    a.... ....

"You haven't answered the question with any of this. "no." Why not? Why not the Grim Reaper? "
i already gave you my perspective on the grim reaper's conduct in my last post(i.e.,i'm pretty sure he doesn't fuck you and go on a crying jag. just my opinion.)
"Don't worry about me and my repressed homosexuality. I won't take it out on anyone. Promise."
you actually alluded to having repressed HETEROsexuality("the repressed straight side of me"?) which is...kind of unusual...especially in the context of your post. hence my bemused reaction. i'm gonna get out of this now because you don't seem to keep track of what either of us says from one post to the next.

  64. J.... B....

As he laid me back just like an empty dress. And I moved. But a minute after he was weeping. His tears his only truth. And I moved. But I moved toward him.

  65. M.... H....

For all those people who are talking about Pete being a guitar player and this not working, you shouldn't listen to the likes of Quadrophenia then. He wrote the entirety of that shit from the synths all the way down to the horns. He's more than a guitar player. He's a fantastic arranger as well.

    M.... H....

i always forget that he's a guitar player! i'm so busy focusing on the vocals, music, lyrics and synths i'm like "oh yeah,he's a guitarist"(or alternately,"what? you're listening to the guitar?"). but he's great at that too!

    M.... H....

    he's a fucking genius

  66. m.... j....

This song is haunting. The piano just blows me away.Best song Pete ever done in my opinion

    m.... j....

+m guindon Top ten for me too. Those tinkling piano bits that start it off? Like magic.

    Pavardigar is better!

    m.... j....

m guindon You hit it right on the head when you said this song is haunting.....it is an absolute masterpiece from an overlooked album....Pete Townsend is unquestionably one of the top 15 or so songwriters in the Rock era. This is certainly one of his best solo songs.FANTASTIC!! people should check out the entire album,"Empty Glass".

    m.... j....

    m.... j....

Generalmente las canciones que tienen la parte de piano inspirada y tocada por un capo como John "Rabbit" Bundrick se vuelven clásicos insuperables.

  67. m.... ....

I would have loved to hear what Bette Midler would have done with this song. Or Debbie Harry...or Donna Summer, for that matter. You know, for all his reputation as an archetypal godfather of power-pop and punk, Townshend proved on this album that he was so versatile, he could pull off a convincing disco ballad...written for a *woman* singer...without changing the gender. Would anyone else--say, Billie Joe Armstrong--have the balls to write and sing a song like "And I Moved"?

    m.... ....

    +moogyboy6 HAHAHAHA!! See above post!

    m.... ....

I agree, it would have been a smash hit.

  68. E.... N....

Ironic that the song is about a gay encounter, but the image on the video is Pete with two women. (Yes, I know the song was supposed to be given to Bette Milder, and she rejected it for "being too smutty"... wtf is THAT about?? LOL)

    E.... N....

+Eric Night Well if it was for Bette Milder, then it would lose its appeal of gayness. Pete might have just made that up when people confronted him about the gay aspect.

    E.... N....

It's a great great song and it would have been a great song for Bette Midler. This was an absolutely perfect proposal. Sure it would have another meaning sung by her. Mr. Townshend has written amazing songs and this one of them. A simple one but nevertheless a very god one with a catchy tune.

  69. F.... ....

I think Madonna could make a great cover of this. Could be a big hit, like this deserved to be in the first place.

    F.... ....

+FritzIdler HAHAHA!!! So funny. On so many levels!!!

Maybe Taylor Swift? Madonna? Shit man, that's old too. Mine as well say Kate Smith for Christ sakes! (now THAT i would like to hear!)

    F.... ....

I was thinking of it only as music, not as a video. Particularly Ray Of Light. Same treatment. What's more, this song has been around so long, she could have covered it while still young. Hell, it's almost old enough to be covered by Kate Smith. Who never would. As far as the rest of your comment goes, fuck you, ageist. At least Madonna never got fat. Unlike you, no doubt.

    F.... ....

@FritzIdler I actually love Ray of Light.

  70. f.... H....

    chomo pete

  71. j.... ....

    Cinematic, kinetic!

  72. s.... ....

good grief, can't anyone ever just enjoy a good song anymore without creating political drama on youtube? who care's what the song is about, even if its about kittens attacking puppies its still a great song.

  73. O.... ....

& also about Rough Boys he said: "A lot of gays and a lot of bisexuals wrote to me congratulating me on this so-called coming out. I think in both cases the images are very angry, aren't they? In 'Rough Boys,' the line 'Come over here, I want to bite and kiss you' is about 'I can scare you! I can frighten you! I can hurt all you macho individuals simply by coming up and pretending to be gay!' And that's what I really meant in that song, I think."

  74. O.... ....

& yet, interestingly enough, Pete said he planned to give this to (wrote it for) Bette Midler but she rejected it because it seemed "overtly sexual". People will always look for a hidden meaning either way.

  75. l.... ....

Sorry to offend but it isnt my biased opinion . Pete Townsend was asked about the song.It was on tv years ago. It is a true story. but he refused to reveal who he saw.....Its speculated it was Keith Moon . I did not mean to offend .I just knew it was not about a gay encounter. It is a very emotional song !

  76. F.... C....

That's your biased opinion. How dare you state it as fact. People write songs based around desires, emotions, etc. NOT politics, historic events and religion.

Generally speaking a person may alter the interpretation of a song a small bit based on his/her own feelings.. but to go as far as to say it's about religion.. without backing it up! Ha, it couldn't be more clear what it's about.

You have waived your right to be taken seriously

  77. l.... ....

The song is religous - not about sexuality . But I can understand how people cant see the deeper meaning & opt for the , its about a gay encounter .

  78. F.... C....

Really.. how does how Pete expect people to believe he's not bi if he writes lyrics like this!

  79. K.... R....

schönes lied ,hängen paar schöne erinnerungen dran!

  80. p.... ....

if it wasnt for the lyrics...this would have been a major hit. great musical creation

  81. S.... P....

actually the one one the left is my mom.

  82. W.... ....

    Love the Piano assume!

  83. T.... Q....

    Really? And how's that?

  84. T.... Q....

He wrote this song for Bette Midler to sing and she rejected it and he ended up singing it. Obviously.

  85. t.... ....

is that kim basinger in the picture?

    t.... ....

I don't think so. For years I've tried to track down who these women were. Definitely British citizens.

  86. p.... ....

and i grew........and i moved toward her would make it a classic....the music is that good

  87. p.... ....

what a fantastic tune to be ruined by the lyrics......

    p.... ....

ruined? why? i think the lyrics are very touching. it's good the way it is

  88. R.... ....

As an alcoholic I feel for Pete, at least as he did in 1979-81.

  89. F.... C....

Okay Pete.. we get it, you're gay!

  90. j.... ....

Yes, Great soundtrack. I used to be an Argentinian made vinyl. Badly cut.

  91. m.... r....

i totally agree with you man

  92. S.... P....

my favorite tune of the LP."What Would I Be Without your Love".but we both are big fans and I'm a "Yank".nice chatting,Later.

  93. a.... r....

i heard some of it when it came out.. I'm not much of a fan of roger's solo stuff...though i did like "Under a raging moon"...

  94. S.... P....

interesting, the rebels where havin trouble affording new guitars for their rants.I used to dance on Saturday nite dance(weekly) to "I Can't Explain"in 65 so I was there from the the beginning.I think they sold a bunch on 45's but not so many LP's.they are hard to find in pristine shape now.the 68 up stuff was all LP's.I have most.Have you ever heard the McVicar sound track?

  95. a.... r....

pete actually "cheated" a bit w/the guitar smashing. After he destroyed a guitar, he would get all of the pieces and glue the axe back together again. During the last song, he would use the repaired guitar and smash it again..

  96. S.... P....

I have to agree from the stand point that they did the first break and smash with some of the early stage stuff.Pete ruined many an amp and guitar.very cool stuff. You have to remember "My Generation".

  97. a.... r....

it's not over my head at all..i'm just used to the Who's wall of sound from the 70's. I do appreciate just about all of pete's songs. I just take issue w/some of the arrangments..AS for the big hair bands...lol...not my cup of tea. I"m stuck w/my influences....joe walsh, jimmy page, beck, clapton, leslie west, peter frampton, etc...as for me wanting guitar work....pete townshend is a guitar player...lol

  98. N.... s....

AWSOME!!!! but true you need to hear this song blasting!

  99. S.... P....

i disagree,if you want guitar work go see most other Big Hair bands from the 80's.I love the traveling piano and drum working to a crecendo.this is brillant and maybe over your head.
