Pet Shop Boys - Home And Dry (Blank & Jones Remix) Lyrics

So my baby's on the road
Doing business, selling loads
Charming everyone there
With the sweetest smile

Oh tonight
I miss you
Oh tonight
I wish you
Could be here with me
But I won't see you
'til you've made it back again

Home and dry
Home and dry

There's a plane at JFK
To fly you back from far away
All those dark and frantic
Transatlantic miles

Oh tonight
I miss you
Oh tonight
I wish you
Could be here with me
But I won't see you
'til you've made it back again

Home and dry
Home and dry

Far away
Through night and day
You fly long haul tonight
Come to me
You know I'll be here
When you call tonight

Oh tonight
I miss you
Oh tonight
I wish you
Could be here with me
But I won't see you
'til you've made it back again

Home and dry
Home and dry

One of the most awesome, but reckless, things I ever did with this song was many years ago as an 18 year old when it was monsoon season here where I live; it was night time and literally pouring down sheets of rain and I was driving home from visiting my parents who lived some 70 miles away. I knew it was unsafe and crazy to do it, but for some reason I was compelled to drive even faster, and harder through the rain with this song on. The breakdown starting at 3:16 got me so hyped and I turned the volume up so loud that it was the only thing I could hear, cancelling out the rain smashing against my car and windshield. I felt like I was in my own music video but as that breakdown carried me through I also noticed that my speedometer was creeping closer and closer to 100mph, but I still didn't care. Somehow my car hadn't even shown any signs of hydroplaning yet so I was emboldened to keep going. And it only got better. Occasional explosions of rain water smashing beside me. The oscillation of my headlights catching the glimmer of raindrops before me moments before they crashed into my windshield. The subtle changes in lanes I had to take when I noticed puddles of water too large and knowingly dangerous to rip through; all of this happening in a stormy night with the highway lights acting as my only friends and guides, whose ghostly hues of amber peaked through the beloved chaos swirling around and against me. The moment only lasted for the two some minutes that the breakdown allowed but what an incredible moment in time it was for me.

Looking back, I would never do anything like I did then today. I'm much too "old" and definitely too married, with a child even, to consider being that risky again. But because I'm looking back, I'm glad I got away with it. And just like the song's title dictates, I did make it home: Home and Dry.

I cannot listen to this song without going back in time and remembering how much more magical and wild it was to be alive. THIS, among many other factors, is the reason why I love Trance so damn much.
