Periphery - The Scourge Lyrics

As I sit with eyes heavy, omens clear
Face down in seclusion
The evils steer
What drives the stake within my heart
This man, he fell apart
Now that the entrance is open wide
This black all around makes it's way inside
What have you done? Will hate abide?
Where is my death invitation? Elation?

Dead wind swirling beneath these prayers I hide
I'd give my life for a taste of, taste of
What lies beyond in that place now
Live Earth rising beneath these hands untied
I'd leave my life on the line

Never one of them
I am not free!

Survive! I will survive!
Glass ceilings above drop rage upon them (raging upon them)
Stone cold fist and a memory
Running on the blunt end of a blade
The blood that it spilled shall start my serenade to you

I will survive,
I will survive,
Survive!

From 1:45 till where Spencer screams and the guitars come back blaring, I imagine an orchestra of violins and all that just creating a wall of sound bigger than it already is

  11. .... ....

What does Spencer say in 2:04?

    .... ....

(Never one, Never one of them, never one of them, never one of them. I am not set free...) I AM NOT FREE!

  13. A.... H....

This song is the main reason i bought the album

  14. A.... P....

01:36 to 03:02 : one of the darkest and heavyest thing I ever heard (top 20)

    A.... P....

+Antigone Project It isn't that dark at all. Monuments do this all the time

    A.... P....

+Katz Katterson lol oh the entire spectrum of music it's pretty damn dark n heavy

    A.... P....

  19. G.... R....

the bit at the end was horrible

  20. T.... ....

Wow, the vocals have improved a lot! Simply fantastic.

  21. r.... ....

    2:50 <3

  22. o.... E....

That blood curdling scream at 2:30 gives me goosebumps every time

  23. M.... ....

Most overrated crap ever, they have potensial to be really melodic but insted choses to be technical.

    M.... ....

They are melodic and technical and groovy at the same time

    M.... ....

They are being Periphery and not some Dragonforce.

    M.... ....

    @diazzsama Their barely melodic.

    M.... ....

Guy that doesn't know how to write potential says that periphery sucks... Sure, I'll listen to the guy who didn't finish 3rd grade... Oh also, it's '' They're barely melodic '' , not  ''their''.

  24. o.... ....

This is some Heavy fucking shit! :O

  25. S.... ....

Very good song that builds up beautifully

  26. A.... T....

The scream part from 2:30. Can anyone direct me to other songs with that kind of epicness. it's so damn awesome. thanks in advance

    A.... T....

You just gotta listen to their whole discography. They have been amazing since day one! :)

    A.... T....

Monuments - gnosis album has loads of screams similar. Their newer album the Amauensis is a better album imo

  27. P.... J....

All sounds the same , ripped of mcr aswell ... Shouty screamy crap

    P.... J....

'shouty screamy crap' I don't think you belong on a periphery video if you don't like occasional screams :P

    P.... J....

+Peter James Lee there literally isnt a more obvious reveal of trolling that 'ripped of mcr' lmfao i burst out laughing at this comment

  28. J.... L....

Is there nowhere to get this artwork?!

  29. A.... R....

I hear a lot of Devin Townsend influence in this song

  30. J.... W....

Spencer sounds so pissed off in this song. I love it.

  31. M.... ....

Gonna get cyberbullied for this, but what the hell is djent?

  32. U.... C....

this might be good as a filler inside a concept album but as a first single? bad bad choice..

    U.... C....

It is a concept album >.> and I hope u know this isn't a single

    U.... C....

+xavier morales i know it's a concept album and i love it.. And it was the first song they released from the album.. Sooo..

    U.... C....

Oh I can see where u got confused lol but I don't think this was the first I think it was a bad thing idk if it was but that's the first I remember seeing before this album came out so idk they did tease the album before hand so I can see why u might have been confused again anyways let's stop this argueing lol this is an amazing album and we shouldn't bickering about which song came first lol

  33. J.... I....

I made this account to say hollyyyyy FUCK.

  34. J.... L....

    God I love this song.

  35. L.... M....

Is really no one going to comment on Spencer's fucking insane part at 1:38? That's a pitty cause it possibly could be the best vocal part I've ever heard. EVER.

    L.... M....

He is killing it on Alpha AND Omega. And I mean the albums ofc, not the songs. The evolution he went through since P1 is amazing!

    L.... M....

Listen to the scream he did in Ragnarok as well if you haven't already

    L.... M....

@Speckon McBacon at about 3:50 ish

    L.... M....

@Luka Markač I get the chills every time

    L.... M....

@Luka Markač how about at 2:44 till basically the end? fucking amazing

  36. L.... F....

You know what you can do if you don't like the direction there moving in? Listen to there older stuff, it's all great.

  37. S.... ....

I don't know what people are bitching about, I think this a beautiful evolution of their sound

  38. J.... K....

this song is 3 kvlt 5 me

  39. M.... S....

i can totally picture m. shadows singing this haha

  40. D.... W....

I know about an electronic music bad that have less effects on their tracks... periphery u was one of my favourite bands -.-

  41. d.... ....

I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. This song is very moving and paints a picture for me. Also that chorus sound on the bridge is woof-woof.

  42. A.... R....

The brake section it's so Trivium, Like Callisto or Becomig the Dragon! XD

  43. T.... H....

I had to get pretty high, but I love the vibe 1:50 on-wards...

  44. S.... ....

This is awesome, but am I the only one who liked when Spencer would use a little auto-tune here and there? All the (I'm a guitarist so idk what it's called when a vocalist does it) pitch-bending makes his voice sound a bit metalcore-hardcore-esque and I am not about those kind of vox at all. Still a great voice and everything, but I fell in love with their original sound.

  45. L.... S....

I think that Periphery more set the bar for other bands than move the goal post by constantly bringing a new sound to each track

  46. L.... S....

at 2:04 the vocals are so Sikth inspired it's dumb

  47. y.... ....

I really love this song, especially the clean and atmospheric section at 1:40 till the end, it's just awesome!

  48. s.... ....

    3:33 SURVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that i might have just unlocked the key to eternal life. so fucking epic it almost brought tears to my eye's

    s.... ....

    100% same

    s.... ....

Local man literally too motivated to die.

  49. K.... ....

2:04 Suddenly Disturbed? :DD love it

  50. M.... C....

These days when you click on a Periphery song you never know if its going to be heavy as fuck or if its going to sound like you just walked into a gay bar.......

    M.... C....

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, you think that anything thats not balls to the wall heavy is automatically gay? Correct me if I'm wrong.

    M.... C....

@Evil Toad At what point did I say "anything thats not balls to the wall heavy is automatically gay"?   I listen to plenty of music that isn't heavy.  Its the pop/punk schoolboy tenor vocals that I have a problem with.  I understand its their band and they can take it in whatever direction they want, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.   :-)

    M.... C....

@Matt Culler ohhhhhhhh. I totally interpreted that wrong. My mistake man.

  51. A.... ....

Love it if you do, hate it if you do, ignore the bad and embrace the good!

  52. R.... H....

I don't get the "hurr durr, this isn't heavy" argument, you cant listen to 2:29 and tell me that it doesn't make you want to punch a 5 year old in the face

    R.... H....

I legit was just stood wide mouthed when I first heard this part

  53. J.... M....

1:40 whoa spencer that was fucking brutally awesome!

  54. D.... D....

Oooh, and this is why I hate metalheads sometimes. Who cares what 'category' you think these guys fit under? They certainly don't, nor do they happen to care about whatever you have to say about them. (Including this humble little post.)

The point is that these guys are ri-godamn-diculous, and there's a reason why they have lasting power, regardless of whatever they might be doing. Stylistically at least.

    Good music = Good music.

  55. J.... W....

this track has resurrected my hopes for this album.

  56. J.... W....

I, am, SO impressed with this and The Bad Thing. I wasn't expecting this at all.
I can't express how much I'm looking forward to Alpha and Omega.
From 2010, they have come so far.

  57. N.... S....

Wow, Spencer Sotelo has the best vocal range!!!

  58. a.... ....

    3:33 That part!

  59. B.... C....

    zZzZzZzZzZ

  60. T.... L....

Music is sick. not too keen on American singers. all in all not bad i guess.

  61. A.... Y....

In the comment section for "The Bad Thing", people are complaining about how generic the main riff is. Meanwhile, here, people are complaining about how it doesn't have enough djent riffs. Oh the irony.

    A.... Y....

+Florentin “Hiro” Peters so youre included the fucking people, because youre people.

  62. D.... ....

Love it!  Its refreshing to have the vocals lead the music, really tells a story this time!

  63. Z.... M....

love this song but the bad thing is still unavailable in canada :(

  64. B.... ....

1:16 "I'd give my life for TINNSELLLLLLL"

    B.... ....

    Merry Christmas!

  65. B.... ....

    1:03 "PooooooOooooOOOOOoooooooooooooo"

    B.... ....

Lmfao fuck you. Now I can't not hear it ahahahha

  66. M.... N....

This song is really going on me!!

    M.... N....

"This song is really growing on me" is the expression you're looking for unless of course you're joking which in that case... lol

    M.... N....

@oddball21 Thanks for the heads up...

    M.... N....

    @Michael Nishikawa
    I knew what you mean't don't worry ;)

  67. R.... C....

    This one is really different...

  68. R.... M....

I love how they didn't stick with the whole typical djent movement. That's the beauty of progressive metal, always changing for the better (or at least I think)

    R.... M....

I like how much electronic and post-rock/soundscape they add to their albums, it keeps it fresh

    R.... M....

Listen to 'The Bad Thing" lol. It's the most djent song I've heard from them.

    R.... M....

    @Tyler H so true

  69. y.... ....

are you serious this song is amazing

  70. M.... T....

I need these albums right now. In and around my face. Couldn't be happier to support you guys, loving the new sounds and ideas. Forget the haters, write the stuff you dig!

  71. C.... M....

the ending sounds very devin townsend

    C.... M....

I'm a huge Devin fan and I don't get how so many people in the comments hear the Devin influences. Care to explain?

    C.... M....

@Grotlo i will survive, that sounds like devin townsend 100%

    C.... M....

    @Catalin Maftei 100% agree

    C.... M....

@Catalin Maftei that is true, it's devin

  72. s.... ....

are they not on sumerian anymore?

    s.... ....

In the US yes, Century must be what theyre signed to in UK or Europe or something

  73. B.... W....

Dear everyone unsure about this song: give it another chance.
I just came back to it after a fortnight of thinking I didn't like it, and now it's one of my favourite Periphery songs. That fucking buildup oh my god

  74. O.... H....

so are they with century media or Sumerian? Not that it makes a difference

    O.... H....

Century acts as a distributor to other parts of the world, as I understand it

    O.... H....

@Ben Weblin so video of sumerian records is disabled for people who don't live in US , right ?

    O.... H....

Well, i always watched "scarlet" on thensumerian record channel no problem and i live in canada

    O.... H....

@GetScaredGaming But with the new songs they are all "unavailable" for me and I'm in canada too.

  75. S.... E....

this is really progressive. the beginning waas kind of 'meh' and a little boring. they exploited spencers voice too much then. but damn. the ending kicked my ass. good song overall i think. definitely going to purchase this album

  76. 1.... ....

this lyrics is perfect for Vincent Volaju from Cowboy bebop the Movie

  77. N.... K....

So excited to hear 1:38 live. How can people complain about his cleans when he's able to do that? fuck!!

  78. A.... ....

3:20 suddenly reminds me of Devin. Like, something from the works of TDTP.
No, I don't really know why.
Oh and the song is fucking great.

  79. K.... ....

    YAY! MORE PERIPHERY!

  80. a.... g....

this is good.. the sound is manly :-)

  81. l.... l....

As I sit with eyes heavy, omen's clear
Face down in seclusion, the evil steer
What drives the stake within my heart
    This man he fell apart

Now that the entrance is open wide
This black all around makes it's way inside
What have you done? Will hate abide?
Where is my death invitation? Elation?

Dead glimpse lurking beneath this prison, I
I give my life for a taste of
    Taste of
What lies beyond the dead place now
Fire burns rising beneath these sins in time
I leave my life for the void

    I have not tried

    Survive
    I will survive
Collapsed ceilings above drop rage upon them
    Raging upon them
Stone cold fists and a memory run in on the blunt end of a blade
The blood that is spilled shall start my serenade
    To you

    I will survive
    I will survive
    Survive

    l.... l....

    Breh, das incorrect, dog :v

  82. A.... D....

Obviously , that's not so bad , but i was expecting something more from a 2 years preannunced album !

  83. S.... ....

Is it just me or are the cymbals almost non existent in the mix? =/

    S.... ....

@Mike Atkinson Well I said the cymbals..

    S.... ....

@Bunters196 If im not mistaken, periphery uses programmed drums for their songs hehe, not sure though about now

    S.... ....

their first album they used an electric kit for the first Periphery album. the rest have been real drums I believe.

    S.... ....

@Systematic Productions Nah I believe, Nolly said that they wanted a mix that is less-heavy on the high-end since it's a double-album and it could get fatiguing. I expect the mixes weren't too different from the masters right Ermin?

    S.... ....

@Nikolaj Jensen I no this is late but I agree with Shade, don't get me wrong the whole album sounds fucking amazing but the cymbals sound drowned out and murky on this one track.

It doesn't ruin the song but its noticeable through my Yamaha speakers.

All corners of this room are lined with acoustic foam and most of the back wall. I've cross angled the speakers and ran them at about 1/4 their range (which is still extremely loud) and its extremely noticeable.

I'm only saying this because I've chosen this track and Clockwork by Meshuggah to remix as part of my audio Engineering degree, specifically the optional advanced signal processing and mixing.

I still love the music, this is just personal adjustments on my part, I believe the drummer asked for less high end on this one.

I'll add that there is nothing naive about listening to what your ears are hearing. If I thought like that I wouldn't get any bands or tracks to mix and master on the weekends, I'd loose my career.

  84. B.... &....

Im so psyched for this album/s!

  85. W.... S....

1st time i heard this it doesnt sound so good
but now, i realized that i can actually headbang to this

  86. k.... ....

    DjOOOOM--DjOOM-DjOOM--DjOOOOM

Fuck! Is no one hearing what's going on here?

    k.... ....

Just my opinion, the guitars have a doom-like feel for most of this song

    k.... ....

    @StonedToDeliverance
to be fair, the album is about what exactly?

They MIGHT have done that for a reason, maybe. just maybe ;)

    k.... ....

    @Gothic Octopus
We'll only know when the whole thing comes out, including the concept art :)

    k.... ....

    Bkp juggernauts baby!

    k.... ....

Periphery has officially wrote the first djoom metal song. Djent + doom. What a time to be alive.

  87. A.... H....

This is fantastic. I hear a shit ton of Devin Townsend influence in this.

    A.... H....

Like Ziltoid would said... Indeed !!!

    A.... H....

    The ending is bascially DTP.

  88. J.... B....

Is it just me or does the start remind other people of a James Bond theme song.

  89. J.... N....

This is just another side of an amazing group of musicians. Like it or not it shows a different side of these guys and just how much talent they actually have other than resorting solely to syncopation and palm mutes. I dig it.

  90. a.... ....

    Sounds like Dream Theater.

    a.... ....

No surprise there, john pettrucci is jakes uncle

    a.... ....

    @CoastCore TV Really?

    a.... ....

@Jay Horner yup, one of the main reasons why the toured Europe with Dream Theater in 2012

    a.... ....

Not to mention DT is also one of the biggest musical influences for all of them

    a.... ....

I can hear some DT influence (especially at the end) - but the opening is a massive nod to Opeth imo; sounds like something that could be on Ghost Reveries haha

  91. M.... C....

I hope the rest of the album will be better

  92. M.... J....

I just can not wait for Juggernaut to drop.

  93. J.... M....

    Really good!

  94. B.... Z....

Omg disgusting this song definitely needs some cowbells

  95. v.... ....

I like that they're moving away from djent , it's been done so much that it got sucked dry.
Djentheads annoy the piss out of me. I think  They're going z2 and having  Alpha be more accessible and omega will be heavier

    v.... ....

@voxextremos22 "Djent" is basically Progressive metal, for example, what if i play thrash metal, and it is trendy nowadays, some people will say, "why don't you just say it "Hardcore/Speed Metal", since Thrash metal is basically a Hardcore punk genre with speed metal influence it, like Djent, it's basically Progressive Metal with "Groovy" metal or maybe Groove Metal influenced.

    v.... ....

Then just call it what what it is fuck i. Periphery and meshugahh are progressive metal bands
    t

    v.... ....

@voxextremos22  yes, but you said djentheads annoy the fuck out of you.

    v.... ....

I was talking about the ones that complain when a band experiment or progresses

    v.... ....

I see what you mean, but this was an idea before Z2 came out... They still definitely have some of that djent (fuck, I hate that "word") feel, but they are progressive metal.  They are staying true to that first and foremost, and that's why they are a great band.  In my opinion, anyway.

  96. w.... ....

Rip off faith no more much?

  97. R.... ....

    2 things IMO.
Alpha album will be like this, the Omega one will be heavy.

    R.... ....

@Lethargica Stengah Mark said it on Twitter, and I'm sure Misha said something similar on Facebook. They're both being released on the same day :)

    R.... ....

    @Arran Cook
    Awesome

    R.... ....

That is probably the best Idea ever.

    R.... ....

@Arran Cook  Actually Spencer, Mark and Misha said in an interview that Alpha and Omega, tel a complete story and for best listening you should play each front to back in a row. Alpha should be Character Building and Plot Setting, and Omega is more of the climax and action of the story.

    R.... ....

@Adam Charbonneau Yeah I heard that too, I just meant in terms of the music itself :)

  98. z.... ....

    I like it.
It's different from what Periphery normally sounds like but I like it.
It makes me wonder if the people who say it sucks are just some cunt subscribed to vevo or they think they're a metal/djent/progressive metal elitist who who cant handle hearing someone like Kalmah improvise into newer tones or stacked vocal frys.
