Periphery - Ragnarok Lyrics

Forty days and nights I've spent alone.
The shadow hungry angel inside of me grows cold.
Bloodshed on my mind.
A slave to these walls.
Get away from the life sucking call.
Set me free.

Grant a pardon for the meddling soul.
The lives of the fallen deserve to take the spirit's toll.
Within the asylum of a guilty fucking conscience I feel,
I feel the presence of insanity creep up my spine to lock me away in this hell.

Death has made its abode on my shoulders.
It clings to the palm of my hand eternally.
Within ascendance I shall relive the slaughtering.
You'll sing to the dirt, praying for the break of dawn.

Night will bring the presence of a ravenous demon setting out to terrify.
Soul destructive like imploding stars.
There's nothing but the darkness to guide the way.
There's nothing left but the darkness to guide the way.

Scald the inside.
Fold the endless search within you.
Scale the insight, for the day it lies before us.
Somewhere in time...
Off in the distance we can see, shining, clear, our demise to be.
We're not listening to ourselves.

Somewhere in time, we welcomed in the midnight leave.
But in the distance we can see, shining, clear, our demise to be.
We're not listening to ourselves.

    a.... b....

someone who understands me. thank you.

    a.... b....

That movie was pretty meh though, wouldn't live up to the song anyways

    a.... b....

@Иοκτцяηаι lol. Tell me how this song is different to thousands of other songs in the same genre, clown.

    a.... b....

@Strider i think u should work on your brain man. U cant even tell the difference lol.

  29. B.... ....

Wait! Isn't the outro to this song racecar?

  30. J.... T....

I have a theory on this song. Ragnarok (or Ragnarök) is the Norse mythology for the end of times in which some of the major gods will die in a war of the world. The war represented through this song is shown in the beginning and middle of this song, when the metal evil sound of the song is played, but that end bit, where the music becomes peaceful and ambient is when the fallen gods reach Valhalla, which is the Norse version of heaven. (Disclaimer: I don't believe any of this in real life, I'm a Christian lol)

    J.... T....

Jay Petrini that's a very interesting theory in a good way

    J.... T....

I think you're very close to what does happen in Raganrok, though you're not quite there. I most certainly see parallels in the song intro and the description of "an Axe age, a Sword Age, A wind age, a wolf age" in reference to the proceeding terrors to the main battle of Ragnarok. As the song progresses it violently represents the rising of the jotunn, Jormungandr, and Fenris towards Asgard. During the songs climax we can feel the death of Oðinn and the choice the Aesir and Vanir make to die an honourable death followed by the world being submerged in water, then silence representing darkness. The silence is then broken by a serenading and clean movement of clean guitars, a drum machine representing the break of light and the rebirth of the world, with the surviving Aesir (including Viðarr, Váli, Moði, Magni, and Baldr who ascends from Hel) and two surviving humans Líf and Lífþraser.

One thing you get wrong about Norse myth is that the Gods do not ascend into Valhalla, rather they actually die (kinda the point of Ragnarök

    J.... T....

    paganism is wack actually

  31. e.... ....

    1:48 I came

  32. A.... I....

אנגליתAnyone who thinks this is the hardest song he ever heard he would give Like

  36. E.... A....

I wonder if people are coming back to see this after the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer

  37. T.... ....

Was looking for the trailer for the new Thor movie

  38. N.... L....

The double bass is soo bad ass at 1:58 - 2:01

  39. B.... D....

God dam it is so hard to get a good tone from those Di guitars

  40. J.... J....

I love call backto Muramasa! Love when bands do that.

  41. R.... I....

The interlude to this song is the same as the part in Racecar? From like 12:45-13:30 of Racecar?

  42. A.... P....

at 2:20 it sounds like Tool.

    P.... K....

Petr Knedlík You doesn't need HD quality, you are here for the song.

  45. T.... S....

that final high note gives me goose bumps holy shit

  46. C.... ....

    8 string guitar

    C.... ....

7 string, Drop Ab with the 7th tuned to F#

    C.... ....

It's on 8 standard, tuning your low B to an F# can be terrible for your guitar if you dont set it up the right way

    C.... ....

@Will Drake "I was futzing around with a variation on the Totla Mad tuning (BbGDFAD) where you maintain the note relationship on the bottom two strings but on a 7 string, so with our 7s being a half step down, this also brings the low note to F#. The ideas I had for this song didn't require an 8 string, so I figure I would just downtune from our regular tuning and mess around with that"

    It's played on a 7.

    C.... ....

From low to high it's tuned to:
F#, D#, G#, C#, F#, A#, D#. You can pretty much confirm this from watching the P2 studio updates where Misha was tracking Ragnarok on a Decibel I think it was?

  47. S.... M....

I'm pretty sure the part starting at 3:34 is the most epic thing ever written.

  48. B.... G....

Why is everyone calling this so whiplash-worthy? I love this song, dont get me wrong, but Im not even phased by it.

    B.... G....

That's cause you're fucking sitting at home. I was there in LA house of blues summer slaughter 2013 song came on everybody just went crazy and I ended up hitting my head on someone while pushed and I was in the front row too. Let's see how phased you would have been then

    B.... G....

Whoahhhh there @Vanish EditZ . Chill.

  49. .... ....

2:20 to end is best part for me, especially 3:19

    .... ....

    Me to my man

    .... ....

+shael Isenberg. Nvm the next part man, common!

    .... ....

Nocturnal Nucleus agreed I honestly can't stand the first part

    .... ....

i like the intense parts at the beginning alot but i like how it winds down too.

    .... ....

    Brittlekrist - Nocturnal best part 0:00 - 6:35

  50. B.... ....

3:03 kinda sounds like the bridge section in tools schism.

    B.... ....

I got that also and I think its one of the reason I love this song.

  51. K.... D....

0:30 Get away from the Mexican girl!

    K.... D....

Great comment, i think it sounds like get away from the light-skin girl

    K.... D....

Fuck man.... Now i cant unhear that lol 😂😂

    K.... D....

    Lol my ex was mexican

  52. M.... R....

    1:49 Holy shit

    M.... R....

+Matt Rose Night will bring the presence of a ravenous demon setting to out to terrify.

    Jesus...that's scary.

  53. N.... ....

This song is an absolute masterpiece.

    N.... ....

    dlamey8015 fuck yes it is

    N.... ....

I've started my day with this song for many years now it's so dynamic and brilliant

  54. A.... ....

1:49 brb suing periphery for my whiplash

  55. R.... C....

there is not one bad thing said about this band in the comments and it gives me hope for music

    R.... C....

+Robert Costain Misha Mansoor is responsible for the coining of a stupid genre name. Let your hope be lost :)

  56. J.... C....

As if this song wasn't beautiful enough already; I fucking lost my mind at the Racecar reprise from 4:49-6:35

    J.... C....

Didn't even realise it was based of racecar till I read the description. That's my favourite electronic interlude that jakes ever written

    J.... C....

I've listened to this album a billion times. I can't believe I've never picked up on that.

  57. T.... R....

Best part of the whole song is the "Night will bring the presence of a ravenous demon setting out to terrify" part.

    T.... R....

Tyler Read literally makes the hair on my arms stand, so heavy, lyrics make it even heavier.

  58. S.... ....

    3:53  Dat scream

    S.... ....

    check out Masamune

  59. D.... C....

Has anyone done a click of this song in Logic or any other program? I've been pulling my hair out since this came out trying to build it a click so I can learn the song but I read last night that except for Mile Zero, the band changed the bpms on the album every few bars. MISHAAAAAAA!!!!!!

    D.... C....

+Daniel Calderon I saw an interview one time where Mark said it was all 4/4 but with a lot of confusing snare hits.

    D.... C....

@Tyler Read I actually ended up figuring out the whole thing maybe a week after that freaked out comment haha. I sat down at Starbucks with a coffee and ended up doing the whole thing in less than 30 minutes and maybe two sips. It just took patience. There are 12 different changes in tempo! All 4/4 except for two parts after the intro which add two beats and the electronic outro which is 17/4

    D.... C....

+Daniel Calderon you sir, is a master if you figured out all those tempo changes lol
Periphery as far as I know, tracks all their songs in 4/4 but the click at 16th notes so that's what fuck our lives when trying to make a click for their songs lol

    D.... C....

It's true as he says. I remember from an interview that Misha said that they experimented with many tempo changes within songs.

  60. C.... ....

    Djolly good djent

  61. R.... F....

From 1:02 to 1.18... my god...fuckin' awesome drum part!!

  62. J.... ....

    fukn' epic

  63. G.... W....

    2:19 YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  64. P.... ....

i fall asleep while listen to this

  65. P.... ....

Fuck this skrillex-core nonsense. METALLICA S&M FOR LIFE

    P.... ....

    Old Metallica > Periphery
    Periphery >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> New Metallica

    P.... ....

@havoren Agreed, Periphery is fucking great. I'm glad Spencer joined From First to Last, or I never would've found them.

    P.... ....

    Naruto5tails HxH >>> naruto

  66. C.... ....

  67. d.... ....

"duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh dun duhn duh duh duh duhn to OURSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!" Holy HELL SPONCE IS AMAZING

  68. Y.... ....

The rythmical approach on this track is awesome, also the outro is hypnotically melodic. Definately my favourite track on this album.

  69. W.... W....

Off in the distance we can see shining, clear, our demise to be, we're not listening to OURSEEEEELLLVVVEEESSS!!!!!

    W.... W....

    @magdalena pooja ......haha

    W.... W....

I was headbanging while reading this, fuck yeaaaaah!

    W.... W....

    Scald the inside
Fold the endless search within you
Scale the insight, for the day it lies before us
    Somewhere in time

    W.... W....

    YEAH! YEAH THATS SCIENCE!

    W.... W....

I was reading this as the line happened lol

  70. D.... B....

I like the part where he yells "death" lmao

  71. J.... S....

This song is quite special, it kinda works as a vent where you just scream the fuck out of the anger and when it softens down is like a nice contrast to it, like a softener except that it has the potential to make you tear.

  72. S.... P....

What a sudden transition at 02:21..I fucking get goosebumps all the time when I listen to the part from 02:21 to 04:25.... LOVE THIS!!!!!!

    S.... P....

@Shreyas Pai I skip to 2:20 every time lol

    S.... P....

@Audrey Patterson Haha..YES! I do the same! xD

    S.... P....

@Shreyas Pai this part right at 2:21 is very inspired by tool schism ATsrCNJhic4?t=4m42s

  73. B.... ....

This whole song, (but the cleans ending off the song in particular) will forever hold a large spot in my heart no matter what music I'm into...that high note gives me goosebumps every time.

    B.... ....

    @poisenbery
Obviously you don't know the meaning of overwhelmed. Considering he's proved his vocal talent time after time, your comment holds very little relevance.

    B.... ....

    @Vieoh im overwhelmed =o

    B.... ....

@Ian Smith always above and beyond the call

    B.... ....

The intro sounds like the rigi Pokemon legendary theme.

    B.... ....

Seen it live twice. 2 of the best nights I’ve ever had.

  74. C.... B....

Spencer did some awesome low screems to this last night when i saw em. Tbh periphery is heavier live

    C.... B....

Go listen to fucking fuck by periphery. It's complete nonsense, but you can see what Spencer can do with it voice.

    C.... B....

+Jamie Palmer by Girlfight actually :)

    C.... B....

You guys are listening to periphery for the vocals? Hahahaha oh shit. That djent though.. Drums are fucking sick too.

    C.... B....

@Onewayticketto Theastraplanes Thats how they got so popular?

  75. D.... ....

That part like 1:03 - 1:34 sounds pretty edgy as flock. I like

  76. J.... C....

I feel like I can take on the world when I listen to this song, fucking awesome

  77. S.... L....

    This song gives me diarrhea.

    S.... L....

They must have wrote it when they were touring the UK.

    S.... L....

    @BDNproductions *loud mlg randomness pursues

  78. n.... ....

The song that made me fell in love with the band! (first song i heard of them)

  79. C.... ....

I get goose bumps every time I jam this song.

  80. D.... R....

Hi! If you like this song check out our acoustic cover on our channel!

    D.... R....

    Really good!

  81. j.... m....

Heard these guys when they were called "Protest the Hero".

    j.... m....

That's when Phillip H. Anselmo was lead vocals for them?

    j.... m....

    Isn't that another band?

    j.... m....

jason meyer As for I know, Protest the Hero is another band. Another great band, but a completely different one...

    j.... m....

Protest The Hero is a different band. Periphery toured the US with Protest The Hero in 2012.

  82. R.... M....

Periphery should think about "mixing" every time they are hitting the studio

  83. T.... ....

Honestly, this reminds me so hard of Volumes, especially those low end screams.

  84. M.... H....

Still my all time favorite band. I wish they didn't switch up their sound so much in their newer projects tho.

    M.... H....

Juggernaut isn't even out yet nerd :D

    M.... H....

    @bob dylan
No, but remember the EP they released called "Clear"?

    M.... H....

@Speckon McBacon It was simply, as stated by the band, a "sonic experiment". I doubt it will sound very similar to Juggernaut.

  85. S.... A....

How have i not noticed the racecar reference untill now?!

  86. G.... ....

Fuck you all! Falling In Reverse is where progressive metal is at bitch!

    G.... ....

    Failing In Reverse gender clothing

    G.... ....

@GoldenShadowFlame OOh, sorry If I used your insults, my master.

    G.... ....

    GoldenShadowFlame stop.

    G.... ....

    GoldenShadowFlame die

    G.... ....

i like FIR,and sue, they're metal(atleast in some songs) but i wouldn't really say they're prog metal, even were they, them and Periphery have very different styles of prog metal,i wouldn't really compare the two, then again, you're likely trolling,so none of that really matters to you, does it?

  87. S.... ....

2:21 - 4:08 has me crying each time, so fucking beautiful

    S.... ....

I feel you dude. Even after a few years I still feel emotional when I listen to it

  88. A.... ....

I listen to this and Tesseract's "Nocturne" to get pumped for track meets haha

  89. 3.... V....

1:52 someone should make a 10 hour loop

  90. C.... ....

0:49 he kinda sounds like Doriano :0 i love spence haha

  91. Y.... ....

oh but that structures album. oh yeah / is one of the best albums ever

    Y.... ....

    PII is better no offence

    Y.... ....

    @Brendon stacey none taken :)

  92. J.... L....

does he actually say "ninja turtley?"
    .__.

    J.... L....

ok it says "It clings to the palm of my hand eternally." derp

  93. P.... M....

MY GOD THAT INTERLUDE AT 2:20 IS FUCKING EPIC!

    P.... M....

The interlude at 5:00 at the end of the song is better

  94. S.... ....

Love the allusion to Racecar's riff at the far end of the song. I noticed a lot of repeated phrases that I loved in the first album make resounding statements onto the second. Can't wait for the third LP (Clear EP was great!)
