Jesus Christ was used here as a reference point, in a literary way, I believe. Being a symbol of good, both religiously and culturally, his words followed by his actions - being considered an epitome of what a good human being should be - should act like, combined with the idiom 'talk the talk / walk the walk', make for a very powerful message.
Also, you'd have to be a very insular person to think that this song is just about holier-than-thou Christians. Maynard being the lyricist (If I'm correct) would never circumscribe a theme or motif of a song with a message like this to a religious, national or racial group of people. That'd vitiate and dilute the song's message.
The message within the song is for all who'd listen - whether you've recognized yourselves in it in a positive or a negative way.
If you've ever listened to Tool, A Perfect Circle or Puscifer before, you'd know that.

Now do a song about Global Warming and how the same people who lecture us are the biggest polluters in the world. Greta, for example, pollutes the environment much more than I ever will. Same with Al Gore, AOC, Bernie Sanders, etc. Bunch of leftist hypocrites.

You see, this entire song is not a condemnation of Christianity. It's a call to action and a rebuke against so-called "Christians" who only pay lip service to their faith. Having been a lover of your music over the years, this one surprised me. I'd been suffering from a painful arthritis in my back. I by coincidence ran in to my best friend from h.s. back in the 80's. He needed a ride to church as he was the drummer for the band and I played guitar. Long story short, after a couple visits a pastor came over and asked if he could pray for me. I said sure whatever. He put his hand gently on my head, said a short prayer and when he said in jesus name, the pain was gone. The inflammation was gone. It took a while to see what had happened. I wasn't a Christian in any way. One coincidence led to another which led to my healing. Not preaching, just saying I felt an overwhelming sense of joy, power, love, etc. and I wasn't a Christian. I am now. That was only the beginning. I could write a book on how God has blessed me since then, or maybe a couple of books. lol
