Peggy Lee - Black Coffee Lyrics

I'm feelin' mighty lonesome
Haven't slept a wink
I walk the floor from nine to four
In between I drink
Black coffee
Love's a hand-me-down brew
I'll never know a Sunday
In this weekday room

I'm talkin' to the shadow
One o'clock till four
And Lord, how slow the moments go
And all I do is pour
Black coffee
Since the blues caught my eye
I'm hangin' out on Monday
My Sunday dreams to dry

Now man was born to go a lovin'
But was a woman born to weep and fret
And stay at home and tend her oven
And down her past regrets
In coffee and cigarettes

I'm moonin' all the mornin'
Moanin' all the night
And in between it's nicotine
And not much heart to fight
Black coffee
Feelin' low as the ground
It's drivin' me crazy
This thinkin' 'bout my baby
Might maybe come around
Come around

  4. J.... D....

This is just amazing. It's so sexy and seductive sounding. Just imagine the likes of Miley or Rihanna trying to sing something like this. I wouldn't be able to stop laughing.

I dedicate this song to my father. When I was a kid coffee, nicotine, and jazz where three of his favorite loves. ;-)

  17. J.... K....

Love this 1953 blue-eyed soul music. Peggy at her very best.

  18. m.... a....

Funny - just noticed the similarity between this tune and Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday - especially the Trumpet part.

  19. R.... ....

Great version, but can't top the one from Helen Merrill. Check it out, peeps!

  28. C.... M....

I'm exhausted , this is too sad , should we pass out pamphlets

  29. j.... ....

I honestly prefer Sarah Vaughan’s version more but this is BEAUTIFUL HOLY

    j.... ....

On your advice, I just listened to Sarah's version. I love Sarah and especially Broken-Hearted Melody, but in my opinion, this is Peggy's song. Sarah can't touch it. Peggy actually manages to convey more soul and more blues than Sarah.

  30. D.... I....

    Ruby Braffs horn playing outstanding

    D.... I....

The trumpet is Pete Candoli's -- no Ruby Braff involvement in this recording ...

  31. D.... B....

esta bien el te se valora mucho en la india y en el reino unido pero venga vamos como colombiano me atrevo a asegurar que el cafe esta a otro nivel

  32. J.... M....

  35. V.... T....

    Awww baby!!!!

    Cowboy Bebop... (Wolf Whistle)

  36. M.... C....

    yes yes yes !!!

  37. J.... V....

This is from her Decca years! She left Capitol, because there was controversy on Lover. The thing about this wonderful song, is Decca didn't release this as a single! This is the perfect culmination of jazz vocal experience!

  38. g.... g....

This is jazz baby not blues

  39. A.... -....

I wonder if she liked Starbucks...

  40. H.... ....

Although the words of this song are mildly sexist, it's still a great song.  Peggy and Ella Fitzgerald both did a great job with it.

  41. p.... ....

Totally sultry, sexy, and seductive. Amazing vocals. Back then they had to be able to sing. No pitch correction. Much more real than most modern crap

  42. f.... ....

    the song lyrics !

  43. T.... S....

Dear people babbling on rather than listening to the song you clicked on: This is the age of the internet, all music is all of ours to share, with the click of a button we have access to all recorded and uploaded moments in time. This song is so good a music lover from all times is destine to find. Live, Love, and Listen, thank you for the upload and all who took the time to appreciate such a wonderful tune.

  44. J.... H....

If that isnt a new vegas feel i dont what is.

  45. L.... K....

Check out the Peggy Lee influenced song 'Coffee Morning' (1967) by the Bronx genius Laura Nyro, where Nyro sings 'you're my thrill'.

  46. G.... w....

gonna start downloading these songs so I can listen to them when a fallout happens

  47. E.... T....

Smooth like a good cup of black coffee... I like this version it's good , i love Sarah Vaughan's more

    E.... T....

I was just listening to Julie London's version and someone there said they preferred Peggy Lee's. So I came here. Now I find your comment preferring Sarah Vaughan's. Now I'll go find hers. I wonder if someone there will comment about how he prefers Julie London's... I'm lucky. I have a feeling I'll enjoy them all. We're so lucky to get to hear so many great singers so easily.

    E.... T....

Sarah's vibrato is over the top.

  48. H.... C....

Gosh , - I came here for the black flag version . Or wait erh , no
    I didn ´ t

  49. G.... ....

  50. f.... ....

ive never heard a song that sounded sexy like this before. the music itself is sexy. the fuk. it's when she says coffee. woah

    f.... ....

Ironically, it's a song about being depressed. The arrangement is straight out of the Cotton Club or a strip bar, with all the wah-wah trumpet, but that kind of works against the story being told in the song. K.D. Lang's version is another great performance of this tune, and in her recording, the arrangement and Lang's vocal phrasing works very differently, driving home the pain.

    f.... ....

    @Jesus O'Nazareth thanks jesus :D

    f.... ....

This extraordinary song isn't sexy, it's a lament of sorts.

  51. s.... ....

both are good ...julie london and this here peggy lee :) classic !

    s.... ....

    Kd lang sarah vaughan

  52. A.... K....

I'm an embryo and I really, really like this kind of music.

  53. f.... ....

My first love ! I was 2 years old. She never even looked at me. But that voice......stuck in my brains ever since.

  54. s.... ....

Billie Holiday is in there . Peggy must have listened to her . Smooth as silk .

    s.... ....

    absolutely

  55. R.... T....

    Peg's very best !

  56. s.... s....

im a fetus and i like jazz, im special

    s.... s....

I will be born 500,000,000,000,000,000 years in the future and i like this song.

    s.... s....

sun set .. I'm a embryo. And I can't wait to sing this song..

    s.... s....

You're a weeb too. Very special indeed

    s.... s....

Shit I'm still in my dad's sack. Hopefully I make it out of here.

  57. H.... v....

    On my repertoire.

  58. H.... G....

Smoky bar rooms, half drank glasses of bourbon, and dark shadows, great Mike Hammer background music.

    H.... G....

"It was a dark and stormy night when there was a knock on my door, That's when she walked into my life."

    H.... G....

"And when i walked into a room with a dark, tall, mysterious handsome stranger who seemed coy yet something about him caught my eye, i don't know what, if he was dangerous or down to earth but neverless it made my heart thump faster within each step as a i walked over to him" :D

    H.... G....

I don't see a smoky barroom, rather I see an all night cafe where Peggy pours coffee for those who are working (police, maybe) or others like her who just can't sleep, maybe mooning over a failing love affair.

  59. M.... C....

Superbe interprétation avec une magnifique voix sensuelle comme j'aime !!! Quelle classe !!

  60. J.... T....

This song is so friggin smooth dog.

    J.... T....

And so is Peggy Lee's voice.

  61. J.... ....

Very Nice Jazz And Blue...... Enjoy!!!

  62. D.... B....

    What key is this?

    D.... B....

+Taylor Mansfield It's the key to my garden gate.

    D.... B....

C major despite the minor bluesy feel. If you want to get obsessive you could say the bridge (B section) starts out in F minor.

  63. A.... M....

God I wish I could visit one video without some dumbass better than you kid commenting "I'm 4 and listen to jazz." "I was born in the wrong era." "What happened to real music like this?" "My generation's music sucks." We get it, you're a little shit. Cool it.

    A.... M....

and its ignorant as fuck to say today's music is shit. POPULAR music sucks. there's so much music out there

    A.... M....

    +Javier Appleseed Yeah! Pmj!

    A.... M....

+Anna Miller maybe you forgot your black coffee this morning.

    A.... M....

They're kids, chill out. They like good music. It's cool.

    A.... M....

    BAHAHAHHAH!

  64. M.... G....

OH WHAT A BREW !!!! SHEER PERFECTION IN THIS PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE----BRAVO MS LEE AND MUSICIANS !!!

  65. A.... C....

Can someone inform me as to what key this is?

    A.... C....

+Amanda Cross Key of C, but, several changes in it. We rehearsed it tonight, and it was in the key of B.( big band)

  66. h.... ....

Peggy Lee fantastic. You know as a modern jazz pro for many years played loads of songs associated with her but never really followed them up. I guess along with Ella F ,Sarah V, Billy H Anita Oday and of course Nina Simone  are just about the best female voices you'l come across.

    h.... ....

    Don't forget Aretha Franklin

    h.... ....

You do know how to pick them

    h.... ....

    Different thing.

  67. T.... ....

    Is this Jazz or Blues?

    T.... ....

    I love jazz. it's soothing

    T.... ....

No man, jazz is its own soul. This is jazz. Coco is blues.

    T.... ....

    that's right

  68. J.... H....

No one could sing the Blues like Peggy!

    J.... H....

Anita O'Day will make you believe what she's singing.

  69. J.... G....

This song is absolutely amazing. Its so full of soul and it really has the full jazz flavour imbedded in the lyrics. Peggy is such a talented women, one of the greats in the jazz world. Right up there with Ella Fitzgerald.

  70. S.... ....

    classy❤️

  71. R.... B....

    Black Coffee, everybody! :)

  72. P.... P....

    BLOND SOUL

    P.... P....

    Yeah...

    P.... P....

I call it blue-eyed jazz. Not so much soul. It was 1953 after all.

  73. S.... S....

    GOTTA HAVE MY JAVA

  74. y.... n....

  77. E.... J....

Wow! My daughter showed me this song after she came home from her first day of kindergarten! What a trip, man.

  78. J.... H....

  93. L.... ....

    I love Ella's version the most....great tune!

  94. J.... B....

This song was written for me.

  95. L.... A....

lovve to my ears..discovered Peggy Lee after watching Gangster Squad

  96. J.... ....

Sultry, elegant. Just pure class! Ella's version to is sensational but in a different way.
Peggy Lee had a wonderful sexy quality to her singing but in an elegant, classy way.
    Vale to a fine artiste.

  97. M.... A....

I was literally just listening to Ke$ha. I don't think there's anything wrong with modern music, and I love this music, too. I'm 15.

  98. v.... ....

Peggy recorded this song in 1953. Ella's version came out in 1960.

  99. C.... A....

This song was originally from Ella Fitzgerald, But this version is just as great as Ella's. <3

    C.... A....

Actually, this version was released in 1953, seven years before Ella's.  Sarah Vaughan recorded in before either one, in 1948.
