Paxton, Tom - I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound Lyrics

It's a long and a dusty road, a hot and a heavy load
The folks I meet ain't always kind
Some are bad, some are good, some have done the best they could
Some have tried to ease my troublin' mind

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

I've been wanderin' through this land, doin' the best I can
Tryin' to find what I was meant to do
And the people that I see look as worried as can be
And it looks like they are wonderin' too

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

Now I had a little girl one time, she had lips like sherry wine
And she loved me till my head went plumb insane
But I was too blind to see she was driftin' away from me
And my good gal went off on a morning train

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

And I had a buddy way back home, but he started out to roam
And I hear he's out by Frisco Bay
And sometimes when I've had a few, his old voice comes a-ringin' through
And I'm goin' out to see him some old day

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

Well, if you see me passin' by and you sit and you wonder why,
And you wish that you were a rambler too
Nail your shoes to the kitchen floor, lace 'em up and bar the door
Thank your stars for the roof that's over you

And I can't help but wonder where I'm bound, where I'm bound
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound

    A Universal truth

I sure wish YouTube would require that whoever posts a song at least make an effort to also include the recording date, as well as the names of the musicians involved. Who gives a rat’s ass about the date it was posted on YouTube? Just my 2 cents...

  3. J.... C....

this is one of the greatest folk tunes of all time... timeless

I remember, it was my university farewell, and a 80 year old man, was singing this really soft moody Bengali ballad song to this tune, I remember, how he would often slip onto Paxton , and revert back and go on ceaselessly. Well, I don't know his name, neither did I know of this song, before this night; somehow the tune has stitched it's notes hard like an embroidery against my consciousness. Brilliant!

Thank you Tom, for inspiring me and sending me on my folk music and guitar playing journey 55 years ago, at "The Fat Black Pussycat" in East Lansing, Michigan. You took the time to teach me how to finger pick "That was the last thing on my mind". I still do it just like that today. Keep on making that wonderful music my friend.

Thanks , Tom. This was one of the frst songs that I learned to play. Good memories. The lyrics feel old fashioned now, like opening a box of good old photos. Great to see, great to hear. One of most awful treatments of this whistful piece is a version done by bad bluegrass band. Laugh or cry; here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAbIbO7jiWE

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind. The answer is blowing in the wind. (Arent they similar? Or I am thinking too much?)

Songs of that era, the best time, the best music. Glad I grew up during that time.

  10. W.... S....

The man is an inspiration. His song Comedians and Angels has become an anthem for me as I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I'm only 75 so I guess there's still time.

  11. M.... E....

We can all relate to the theme of this classic song.......and I can't help but wonder why.....cant help but wonder why....i wish I was a rambled to....whoever You are reading this ...i love ya

I missed most of this man's career, I had been abducted by aliens to planet X ( early 70s) and missed a lot until I got back to earth (early 2000s).  He writes some pretty fine songs.

I Just saw Tom tonight. His Birthday is on Halloween. He is 80. He still plays and sings just like this. I got to go backstage and tell him happy bday and hug him. I got to tell him how he inspired me to play guitar. One of the best nights of my life.

Thanks for this -- it takes me back to the beauty of what was happening in the mid 60's - and Tom's voice and songs [not that many of them but they were almost all beauties]. Superb!!

  36. K.... N....

This is not past tense! I still sing along in the clubs to his songs: "Can't Help to Wonder Where I'm Bound", "Ramblin' Boy", and "The Last Thing on My Mind" live on yet after all these years among folksingers.

  37. s.... m....

even more than Dylan Tom was the voice of the 60's
