Paul Williams - Sad Song (That Used To Be Our Song) Lyrics

That's a sad song
That used to be our song
The one you just played
I wonder if I'd stayed what we'd be doing now

Yeah, but part of bein' people is an ever changing mind
We don't mean to be unkind
We just grow

That's a sad song
That used to be our song
And oh, she sang it too
And every word rang true like a bell somehow
When I ran off chasing visions my emotions made me blind
Like a fool I left behind my angel's glow

So play it one more time
That symphony in rhyme
Let those old familiar feelin's start to show
Sing my favorite phrase
From those good old days
Let those tears and sweet memories flow

That's a sad song
That used to be our song
And oh you played it well
It isn't hard to tell you love it too

It amazes me to hear it - how it's beauty never ends
Now the music made us friends
I'm asking you

So play it one more time
That symphony in rhyme
Let those old familiar feelin's start to show
Sing my favorite phrase
From those good old days
Let those tears and sweet memories flow

It amazes me to hear it - how it's beauty never ends
Now the music made us friends
I'm asking you

So play it one more time
That symphony in rhyme
Let those old familiar feelin's start to show
Sing my favorite phrase
From those good old days
Let those tears and sweet memories flow

I can never understand why he isn’t so much more widely known and appreciated. I was in single figures when I first heard him, and his music captivated me even then. I guess there ain’t many people like us around, eh?

  2. TimeRider762

I looked up the words musical genius in the dictionary couldn't find it.but I did find Paul Williams right where it should have been

  3. pasquale davino

    good song hi paul

  4. maddie payne

    Anyone know the lyrics?

  5. rubysuncle

This is a wonderful and rarely known tune. And as good as this is, he performed this on The Muppet Show, and that version is probably even more beautiful.

  6. Sara Quay McConnell

I'm grateful for the length. I wasn't ready to let it go at 3:15... Perfection.

  7. iHeart Gaming and Whose Line

whoa I didn't expect it to be 6 minutes long

  8. camilla vernon

I remember listening to this on the muppet show. I've been singing it to myself for pretty much10 years. This man is way too underated

  9. dqf44

I know P Williams since the movie phantom of the paradise. 1974.
I love his voice. And I have this record vinyl. Why not have put a little bit of love that goes with the cover of the disc

anyone know this song's history? why it disappeared after being featured on the muppets? It took me finding an Lp in Japan in order to own this song.

    Captain Nice

The song didn't really disappear. It was on Paul's LP "a little bit of love" on A&M Records. Paul used to close his concerts singing this song.

    fool4singing

+juliakopecka10 He's not? I would challenge you to find anyone over 21 who doesn't know at least a half dozen songs Paul has worked on.

@Charles Williams Well, this IS the same guy the composed the Muppet Movie's soundtrack AND was a friend of the late Jim Henson for many years until his death in 1990. So, yeah, being a creative mastermind kind of went without saying.

    Charles Williams

    well,"you are rigjht. "

The most under-rated genius of music and poetry. I have been a fan forever!

    Collin H.

    Absolutely.

  20. Alex Hunter

This is one of those songs that, once it gets it's hooks into you it doesn't let go.   I've probably listened to it at least 20 times today...

  21. Charles Williams

I've really loved this guy since I was three years old. Im forty now. Can't stop loving that old fashion invitational style. A great songwriter.

    Joyce Decker

    I have loved him forever.
! But mostly now that I lost my mate. You and me against the world says it all for me joyce

    Charles Williams

When it comes to Paul Williams, I've met two kinds of people; those who don't know who he is and those that love him.

    T Ponst86

I ran into him at a restaurant in Denver.  He was wonderful.  I told him how his music has been such a positive force on people.

  22. Gail Ranson

always my favorite singer.Thankyou for posting this.

  23. Keklord Nappa

@MrGabeanator While it was featured on the muppet show it not only was a different version but this song came before the show took him on. (i know people will hate me for this)

  24. marathonmongoose

Different take on it than the version from "The Muppet Show", more gospel-y.  Still nice though, if a bit overlong.  It loses a bit around the 5:00 mark, where his delivery starts getting clipped.

    Sean Doyle

marathonmongoose Paul sang a song in a movie .I think it was in the 70s or early 80s can't remember the name of it sorry. can anyone help thanks

  25. gacj2010

  29. James E

Oddly enough, I can actually kind of picture that working, somehow... O.o

  30. No1KCfan6

great song but this version is unnecessarily long.

  31. radio

    Thank you for the upload!

  32. HandsomeTeddy9

...I can really see why they abridged this song it for the Muppets, it actually works kinda better that way.

  33. Alyson Novak

Strange, but I wish Amy Winehouse had covered this. It would have been beautiful.
