Paul Simon - Time Is An Ocean Lyrics

I speak to you in Jesus's name
As Jesus speaks through me,
The evil we do can't be blamed upon our destiny
I have walked through the valley of death-row to
the shore
I have stumbled through silvery water to my savior
my Salvador!

It took me four years to learn
I was in prison not in church.
And two more to begin the book of my soul's search

Time is an ocean of endless tears

A wild boy from the streets of El Barrio
An orphan from the hills of Mayaguez

And when I wrote my story
The words flew from the page
And my soul in solitary
Escaped its iron cage.

Time is an ocean of endless tears

Mama, I got your letter today
The next time that you write I'll be transferred far away.
I'm leaving Greenhaven's towers of stone
Where the Latin population will soon be minus one.

Time is an ocean of endless tears.

I know how hard it's been for you these many years,
You say the Agulnaldo makes you dream of home
Where once we strolled the beach at Et Malecon
Go back don't you worry, I am your grown-up son.

The politics of prison are a mirror of the street.
The poor endure oppression
The police control the state.

Correctional facility
That's what they call this place

But look around and you will see
The politics of race.

A forest and a prison
Where the snow and guards are white

If you want to keep your sanity
You'll teach yourself to write.

You were a child of sixteen
With a twelve-year-old mind
You came here numb and battered
Ry the streets I left behind

I'll take the evil in me
And turn it into good,
Though all your institutions
Never thought I could
So now I'll turn to say goodbye

I'll keep your image in my eye

I turn around to say goodbye

I'll keep your image with me till the day I die

Time is an ocean of endless tears

This is a great album thank you Paul Simon, for narrating the story of a tiny segment of some Puerto Ricans who migrated to the city of New York many moons ago.

    Best album for me..

  3. Joe Conway

I come back to this Capeman music every now and then...and have begun to realise what a superb concept is therein. Really beautiful.

This Musical has worn very well and is as relevant in 2017 as in1997. Sadly "The politics of race" surround us daily.

Love this song and both the singers. Saw the play - not great. But loved the music. Wish there were an original cast recording.

There is an "Original Cast Recording" I am listening to it now on Spotify.

It is NOT Paul Simon singing on THIS but he did write it and the other songs but he CO-WROTE the play with Nobel prize winner Derek Walcott.... In this song Ruben Blades is singing as older Sal and Marc Anthony is singing as younger Sal.   And it is INCORRECT that the show lasted only 10 days.  We actually ran for a full month in previews in January and then 2 months in full run February through March and believe it or not, this is a lot longer than a lot of shows on the time we ran, a lot of the public could not handle such a powerful, real subject.  I think it would run even longer if we did it again in this current decade and one thing that was never disputed is the incredible musical score..... and furthermore, definately the families of everyone involved were all consulted by Paul Simon's camp (Sal's and the gang members'. and victims') before it was done, with some of the dialogue from their actual testimonies....

Yes, this is not Paul Simon singing...Ruben Blades and Marc Antony played the same character in different stages of his life. I saw the original show twice...I was the guy who designed all the gang tattoos makeup for the stage was one of Simons greatest creations....lots of real Salsa and doo wop, It was a very brave concept, but most people were not open enough to understand what Simon was trying to do with this. If you were lucky enough to see it on stage, you understand what a brilliant show it really was. Again, Paul Simon was his won worst enemy in the creation of the show...he alienated many critics. But I really respect the work. Blades was incredible.

I( saw this play and it didn't close in 10 days. There was protesting by the families of the kids who were killed in the crazy NYC gang fights in the 50s. This song was preformed by Marc Anthony and Ruben Blades. They sang as young Salvatore and older (wiser) Salvador. It was AWESOME!!

@arodoet126 how am I incorrect? just like I said and you said he had people/guests singing a few songs for this album !?

  11. arodoet126

you're both incorrect...Paul Simon wrote the lasted 10 days on Broadway because it was seen as too vulgar...but for the CD Paul Simon did much of the singing instead with some of the people from the musical singing a few songs.

  12. Pixie Sweetie

I will always regret not seeing this on broadway.
