Paul Simon - The Obvious Child Lyrics

I'm accustomed to a smooth ride
Or maybe I'm a dog who's lost its bite
I don't expect to be treated like a fool no more
I don't expect to sleep through the night
Some people say a lie's a lie's a lie
But I say why
Why deny the obvious child?
Why deny the obvious child?

And in remembering a road sign
I am remembering a girl when I was young
And we said These songs are true
These days are ours
These tears are free
And hey
The cross is in the ballpark
The cross is in the ballpark

We had a lot of fun
We had a lot of money
We had a little son and we thought we'd call him Sonny
Sonny gets married and moves away
Sonny has a baby and bills to pay
Sonny gets sunnier
Day by day by day by day

I've been waking up at sunrise
I've been following the light across my room
I watch the night receive the room of my day
Some people say the sky is just the sky
But I say
Why deny the obvious child?
Why deny the obvious child?

Sonny sits by his window and thinks to himself
How it's strange that some rooms are like cages
Sonny's yearbook from high school
Is down from the shelf
And he idly thumbs through the pages
Some have died
Some have fled from themselves
Or struggled from here to get there
Sonny wanders beyond his interior walls
Runs his hand through his thinning brown hair

Well I'm accustomed to a smoother ride
Maybe I'm a dog that's lost his bite
I don't expect to be treated like a fool no more
I don't expect to sleep the night
Some people say a lie is just a lie
But I say the cross is in the ballpark
Why deny the obvious child?

Such a delightful video of these wonderful colorful happy people where music clearly is so natural to them
It’s really lovely to watch and for some reason tears are streaming down my face .
Why can we all not live together with love , respect and peace .
They way our world is going , our PreciousAnimal Kingdom being Decimated .

Anyone know what that form of dance/fighting at the end of the video is called...plz share if so

    J.... V....

This is capoeira. A Brazilian dance / fight. At the time of slavery in Brazil, slaves were not allowed to train any kind of fight for obvious reasons, so they pretended to be dancing with music. There are other versions of Capoeira, but I believe in this one. Listen to the song "Meia Lua Inteira" by Caetano Veloso and Carlinhos Brown. It's an amazing Capoeira song: https://youtu.be/GszhZlipskg

"Cross is in the ballpark".....each of us can decide the meaning of this image.........This song is from Simon's LP "Rhythm of the Saints", perhaps his deepest work lyrically and rhythmically ever, thank you Paul! You're a national treasure for sure.

The church at the top of the steps looks very white in this image, but when I took photos there in August 2011, the building was covered in mold and trees were growing from the steeples. A friend who lives in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil) told me there are funds to restore many of the old churches in the city, but sadly it disappears into politicians' pockets. This video was posted in June 2011, but I'm sure it is much older.

Note that at the beginning and end two men are performing capoeira, which used to be a martial art form, but has evolved into a dance-like performance where blows never land.

On the Michael Jackson video of "They Don't Care About Us (Brazil Version), at 3:42-3:55 you can catch a glimpse of the same church steeples in the upper right. Some of Jackson's video was filmed in the same Pelourinho section of Salvador and some in the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro.

My father is long gone now, from him I got the dark skin and the love for Brazil and it's culture but above all sweet memories dancing to this song in or living room. Thank you Mr. Simon.

Great song by a great musician who did wonderful things for the black people here in America while raising humanitarian funds during the drought and famine, but apologies to mention something unusual.
Ummm... Can you find any video or picture in which Paul Simon actually touches, much less hugs or shows true affection, with a black person? Yes, he donated money to an honorable cause and hired black people to promote his videos, he received awards for his charitable contributions, yet never once can you see him actually hug or otherwise treat a black person other than as his employee.
Please, somebody prove me wrong, I want to believe he is a better man than I understand him to be...

Remember Cuban-born Desi Arnaz Sr. (Ricky Ricardo in I Love Lucy), Lucille Ball's ex-husband, and one of Arnaz's most famous songs, "Babalú"? Well, Mr. Arnaz was singing about a Yorùbá deity, Babalú-Ayé, from the Afro-Cuban religion of Santería. In Yorùbá, he is known as O̩balúayé, or more often as Sopona or Shapona. In the native West African religion of the Fon, he is commonly known as Sakpata. In Brazil, he is known as Omolu, Omulú, Obaluaê, Obaluaiê, Xapanã, and other names.

    d.... ....

I read Cuban American Desi Arnaz's autobiography, A Book, many years ago. Arnaz mentioned how black Cubans greatly contributed to Cuban music and dance, e.g., the conga dance Arnaz helped popularized in the United States during the 1930s with Spanish Catalan American Xavier Cugat. (The Congolese roots of the dance, as well as the well-known Afro-Cuban drum, the conga, are obvious, at least name-wise.) "Conga" is also the title of the first hit single by the Miami Sound Machine, led by Cuban American singer Gloria Estefan.

    d.... ....

Deities in the native religion of the Yorùbá people in West Africa, who live primarily in Nigeria, are known in Yorùbá as òrìṣà (or orisha). In Cuba, they are called commonly pronounced orichá, while in Brazil they are called orixá. (Whether or not there's an "sh" sound in modern Spanish is more complicated than it first seems.)

  81. d.... ....

Olodum, which backed Paul Simon on this 1990 song, is an afro bloco from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Their music is samba-reggae, originally a combination of Brazilian samba & Jamaican reggae. Olodum comes from the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé in Bahia; his name derives from Olodùmarè, the supreme creator in the native West African Yorùbá religion, Òrìṣà-Ifá. In the Afro-Cuban religion, Santería, he is known as Olodumare. Many salsa musicians have drawn inspiration from Santería - after all, salsa originated from the son cubano, an Afro-Cuban music form which blended African and Hispanic musical styles.

  87. B.... D....

I think this song was a obtuse answer to the critics who accused Paul Simon of stealing from African artists when he released Graceland. I think "why denies the obvious child" is both an admission he borrowed from other artists but it's also saying he did so innocently and with no ill intent.

  88. W.... ....
