Paul Simon - Late In The Evening Lyrics

The first thing I remember
I was lying In my bed
I couldn't of been no more
Than one or two
I remember there's a radio
Comin' from the room next door
And my mother laughed
The way some ladies do
When it's late in the evening
And the music s seeping through

The next thing I remember
I am walking down the street
I'm feeling all right
I'm with my boys
I'm with my troops, yeah
And down along the avenue
Some guys were shootin pool
And I heard the sound
Of a cappella groups, yeah
Singing late in the evening
And all the girls out on the stoops, yeah

Then I learned to play some lead guitar
I was underage In this funky bar
And I stepped outside to smoke
myself a "J"
And when I came back to the room
Everybody just seemed to move
And I turned my amp up loud and I began
to play
And it was late in the evening
And I blew that room away
The first thing I remember
When you came into my life
I said I'm gonna get that girl
No matter what I do
Well I guess I'd been in love before
And once or twice I been on the floor
But I never loved no one
The way that I loved you
And it was late in the evening
And all the music seeping through

Just great lyrics about meeting your soulmate....

  4. L.... S....

Great song but I've definitely smoked a "J" before going on stage to play guitar and I can tell you that he likely didn't sound nearly as good as he thought he did

  5. K.... B....

    Steve Gaddis is so tight.

  6. S.... W....

    I Love this song

  7. c.... m....

Paul wrote the soundtrack of my life so far....just plain gifted been the realm of ordinary blessings....stratospheric as. net , musician and HUMaN BEING

    c.... m....

hate when I make these typos: beyond the realm....stratospheric as poet, etc.

  8. S.... W....

    Great Song very funky

  9. J.... S....

    Awesome Paul Simone rocks

  10. D.... C....

Tony Levin on this is awesome. As a bass player, I'm so jealous. This guy has played with almost all of my Idols.

    D.... C....

He also handles a Chapman Stick well.
I see him in a lot of YT music vids I watch. Great player.

  11. M.... W....

158 people didn't make it till late....

  12. C.... G....

Amazing percussion. Simon is actually far more of a genius than Bob Dylan, musically speaking

  13. M.... M....

Paul cannot be discredited for his skills as an artist but he straight stole that horn section break from a Trinidadian Calypsos song of the 70's...

  14. S.... T....

    genius!

  15. T.... Q....

    Is that Tony Banks?!! 😍

  16. g.... ....

Vampire weekend just covered this at a show 9/28/19

  17. J.... F....

    Scritti politi has dreamy eyes

  18. t.... ....

Absolutely one of my fave songs of Paul's! One of his tastiest melodies and arrangements!

  19. b.... ....

    Great stuff 💃

  20. J.... H....

    Those horns man....holy shitballs

  21. D.... C....

Once its sung with Art Garfunkel Paul should never try it alone. It will always be missing something.

    D.... C....

    Dorothy Carlson Disagree

  22. R.... R....

Is this song supposed to sound like a Latin song? I played it in marching band my freshman year (1992, when it was already outdated), and I remember the percussion section playing maracas, and the horn instrumentals sound like mariachi.

    R.... R....

They do sound that way and I think that's what Paul intended

  23. b.... ....

    Paul. Nice✨

  24. A.... B....

    This song is so gangster.

  25. M.... C....

    So good.

  26. P.... B....

this is too fast. slow it down a beat

  27. E.... W....

    Timeless classic

  28. I.... l....

    I still love this song

  29. L.... ....

This guy gets credit and Diamond David Lee Roth gets criticism for “singing” the same way.

  30. L.... P....

    Here from VW

  31. p.... t....

pual simin wouldnt let tony have ANY bass freqs . all mids pal .

  32. M.... ....

The trumpet break in this song is pure magic!

  33. Y.... K....

Ladies & Gents ...the composer of bridge over troubled water...GENIOUS!

  34. c.... w....

Does that dude play with the best musicians in the world or WTF!?

  35. R.... H....

I always wondered why Paul didn't release a greatest hits album (during the 90s or early 2000s) entitled, "Even Crazier After All These Years."

    R.... H....

    Double CD, rather.

  36. S.... M....

    cha cha beat

  37. J.... C....

I was just a kid when I first heard this I thought go outside and smoke myself a J was funny

  38. C.... ....

This has been sped up. It's in F# (more or less...) when the original key is F. If you look at Paul Simon's hands, you can see he is playing in F. Also, his voice has a bit of a "chipmunk" sound. Better to listen to another version...

  39. N.... N....

    Are you kidding me?

  40. L.... ....

Thank you for this glorious performance Paul ❤️💕🌷🙏🥰🌈🌞⭐️🌟✨

  41. y.... ....

    Paul Simon playing an electric???

  42. H.... ....

Dang. Outtake from One Trick Pony?

    H.... ....

Yes, I think it is. It's not the album version.

  43. E.... G....

The 108 and future haters need to smoke a Jay ASAP and appreciate good music. Unless you're not from this planet...

  44. g.... l....

only one that cant sway to that vibe is Paul, and that's why I love him

  45. D.... C....

Art sings this with Simon on the concert in Central Park--much better

  46. E.... P....

A brilliant song by a brilliant artist.

  47. S.... C....

Umm... Who can ignore lil Paul's big bulge?

  48. L.... N....

Love the song, but Paul, Artie and Paul's little brother don't make a very intimidating gang. :)

  49. l.... s....

    que viva PS

  50. P.... L....

The mummer's play this song marching down 2st it's the best

  51. M.... R....

Hoo- Daddy!!..Paul's got some nice looking 'pants' there :)

  52. R.... A....

    Fine production.

  53. R.... G....

How could anyone hate this? See you soon Mr. Simon for the last hurrah...homeward bound for ever...

  54. J.... ....

Weird, this was top 10 and I have no memory of this song. I thought he was gone from the charts between Slip slidin away and his Graceland album.

  55. J.... D....

Paul Simon is such a musical genius. There have been many good song writers, some still around today; but Paul is a genuine genius. He great at lyrics, so good that some of his lyrics are studied as poetry in some American University’s. He is a master of rhythm and a genius when it comes to melodies. He is one of the twentieth and twenty first century’s musical icons.

    J.... D....

Jack Duncan I agree... But I think that, most of all, he is a great intuitive musician and he has been able to take many influences of all the music he has known around the world...

    J.... D....

luis marcelo inostroza bidart yes, that’s very true of the man. Thanks for your reply, it adds another dimension to Paul’s character that is a huge part of what makes him so iconic.

    J.... D....

@luis marcelo inostroza bidart I agree. Strangely enough, he's been criticized for doing that like he was "stealing" a piece of their culture or something. I think he's a genius.

  56. D.... H....

ESTO ES MUSICA DE VERDAD BIEN HECHA CON SENTIMIENTO CON ENTONACIÓN TIENE TODO Y ES BAILABLE LO MÁXIMO

  57. T.... ....

Paul always had great lyrics.  Real talent.

  58. G.... P....

I could hear Ricky Martin doing a cover of this making Paul a few million ... You can never have too many millions (-:

  59. m.... ....

I can’t wait to see this guy... omg

  60. A.... H....

Paul is ripped in this video!!

    A.... H....

Hah he worked out alot. A very clean diet. He didn't ate meat or junkfood. He did so much running sessions and had a own gym in his home during the 80s...

  61. E.... G....

Good God! Steve Gadd sure is jamming on the drums at 02:45 Reminds me of Animal from the puppets 😁

    E.... G....

El Guapo Steve Gadd used 2 sticks in each hand to get the sound he had.

    E.... G....

sheesh... i kept saying to myself how the drummer looks like the drummer killing it in one of my favorite Grover Washington Jr cuts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Uc-9iBGzYw

  85. l.... ....

    Wow, that's fast.

  86. J.... T....

    J.... T....

simon is incredible...but their voices together were so beautiful

    J.... T....

They started out as a team when they were in school...it was NEVER a matter of Paul needing Art.....they were a TEAM for many years. Besides.... ART had a FANTASTIC VOICE!

  87. d.... m....

I'm a guitar player and know almost nothing about drums. I'm a typical Keith Moon, Ginger Baker you know .. Fan. But this guy Gad is it? Steve Gad maybe? He has gotta be a big deal in the drumming world. Like I say I know nothing about drums and can probably only name 10 drummers if that. ( all rock drummers of course) but I feel like this guy must be ..... Well a big deal.

    d.... m....

just saying, u roc for laughing

  90. k.... ....

    Ya baby!

  91. d.... ....

Why is this so sped up? Almost sounds like an old 33 played at 45rpm. Yikes. Paul on helium.

    d.... ....

The reason is this is footage from the shitty movie One Trick Pony which is where the song originates from

LMAO out loud! I thought you meant his biceps at first. Too funny

    C.... C....

    Heat or MEAT!

    C.... C....

Lol! 😁 I thought it was hilarious that not only did somebody else notice but actually commented about it! Ya know, Paul may be of short stature but it seems that that's the only thing short about him! I always thought his feet seemed a little big, a bit large for a person his size... Lmao! 😂

    C.... C....

And this is why he's not singing soprano.

    C.... C....

@Beverly Jo Mitchell I know Im seeing this video alot later in life..but..I thought..Im such a perv.. Thats the first thing I saw.Lol! THEN I realized how great this song really is.
