Paul Simon - Kathy's Song Lyrics

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls.
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day.

And as a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I

Paul Simon Kathy's Song Comments
  1. D.... E....

Aggregate all of the stuff I've said.
I'm riding to New York and smoking a joint in central park on the grass.
How much is that brownstone that I am buying?
I'll serve you no food as I purchase the property.
I just got the King of England to quit his claim.
I'm coming. He knows they were all imposters.

  2. D.... E....

The internet is a sack of garbage.
i'll never forget the high school summers listening to this music.
In fact it was winter, a best time for me and my mother.
    The best of all.

“So you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
    I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you”

The most beautiful lyrics. Simon and Garfunkel are completely timeless and I will never tire of these songs

Born in the '90s and forever nostalgic for the hippie era when they made this beautiful music and people actually cared about each other not just money and the rat race.

    l.... ....

You are a sweetie. I was born in 1958. What a time it was, excuse the pun😍

    l.... ....

Well born in 2001 I can completely agree with you

Btw I thought no one listened to these type of songs anymore and here I see a comment3 days ago

@Pratik Lomte Many people still listen. You might also like Reilly and Maloney and Kate Wolf.

I love paul simon's music. It is not just beautiful music. It is poetry. And i have been listening to him since 1965. Never tire of it. Ever.

  9. K.... M....

Kiss you when you start your day GinaD❤️

  10. B.... B....

How I miss the music from then... reminds me of playing guitar and singing with my Dad. How I miss him and my Mom....

  11. P.... C....

How is it possible that there is so many uncultured heathens in the world that would give this a 👎? This is an example of songwriting and guitar playing in its purest and most brilliant form. It is poetry set to music in a stripped down format with no teams of writers, auto tune, or preprogrammed music off of a computer
Just two guys and one guitar, eloquent words and brilliant guitar playing.

  12. R.... B....

Thank you for all your comments as we have the same course, Pls, just call me Rudy a Pilipino but I live in Brazil

Somehow I'm just hearing this song for the first time today. What a bright spot in what has been a very crazy time in the world. I couldn't help but think of one of my favorite Shakespeare quotes as I read the lyrics:

"I to the world am like a drop of water
That in the ocean seeks another drop,
Who, falling there to find his fellow forth -
    Unseen, inquisitive - confounds himself."

I feel like that is such a great comparison to Simon's lines:

"And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain"

That last line: "There but for the grace of you go I" brings that all together so well. This is now my very favorite lyric.

  20. R.... Q....

This song is sung better by Paul than by Art.

    R.... Q....

That's absolutely true. IMHO Simon's writing for Simon & Garfunkel is genius, classic, and eternal. Strangely though, it's like Paul can't write unless he's writing for Art's voice - even when Art's not the one singing. His solo albums were initially successful but not terribly memorable. This song and album is still perfection after 53 years.

  21. J.... J....

This song is to good. His guitar playing and his singing. Both played at the same time. Oh my god.

  22. P.... M....

"Cathy's Song", easily the most romantically creative of Simon & Garfunkel's songs ...
Simon, why did you not marry the girl! aaaah, your mind was distracted & diffused, I understand, that's what love does to you ...

I hear the drizzle of the rain
    Like a memory it falls
    Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls
    ...
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
    ...
    My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day
    ...
And so you see, I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
    I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you ...

Thanks Paul & Garfunkel you've made the world sweeter ... it's creativity like this that sweeps my mind & jogs my imagination

  23. F.... B....

After wolf these years I finnaly gove them a listen and I feel soo lucky to have soo many new songs to love that are quite inspiring and thoughtful.

I heard this song when I was about 10yrs old.
I felt like I wanted to go away and go home at the same time.

    Beautiful

  27. M.... P....

if I ever get tired of pauls lyrics and arts voice its time to meet my maker.

  28. L.... Z....

Truly the greatest songwriter of my time.

  29. E.... W....

The opening chords to this beautiful song are the opening chords to my happiness. I remember when I was living in a small flat and I knew a girl who made my heart ache every time I saw her, she never knew it but that's how it was. I would sing this song out loud and to me this was her song. Our lives took turns that took us in different directions but my heart always had an empty spot. Time passed and fate interviewed, we crossed paths again and I had the courage to tell her how I really felt. My mind was distracted and diffused and my thoughts were many miles away but on that evening, nothing could have been clearer. She is now my wife and she still doesn't know it but Kathy's song still brings an ache to my giddy heart...all because of her.

    E.... W....

  39. N.... E....

What's often overlooked is just how sweet Simon's voice was. Always found his vocal more interesting than Art's, which was clearly exceptional in its purity.

  40. D.... J....

Is there a more beautiful language in all the world than the English language?

    C.... A....

Yes French is equally beautiful if not more beautiful to me because this is my mother tong. But I admit English is such a great language, No wonder English is universally spoken by many peoples.

  69. K.... K....

Would have liked it if somehow Simon could have worked a little harmony for Art into the song. But it was Paul s song. They did not always get along but this song was early in their career.

  70. a.... n....

Hard living? It’s a deep life and her right a deep life and hypocrites down here , all of u,can pontificate pontifically...tomruin a great lady heart

  74. G.... N....

In loving memory of my beautiful wife Kathleen who died on 30th January 2019 of pneumonia following her first chemotherapy. I've selected this song for my funeral, whenever that happens. She always loved Simon and Garfunkel's music and this song was ever special to us.

    G.... N....

Im sorry for your loss. Her memories will forever be cherished

    G.... N....

    . . .
Each loss leaves a hol(e)y place
    around us and within;
if we with care will enter there,
    something may begin . . .

  75. A.... R....

It's the very last line of this song that get's me everytime..

  76. T.... P....

the epitome of what love is. the sad part is that most of us dont have anything like it.

    T.... P....

That kind of love went away a long time ago sadly. Not likely to return.

  77. r.... ....

    Too good

  80. T.... c....

Beautiful song... But should I be worried about Kathy?

  81. G.... N....

To my beloved wife , Kathy who is fighting cancer, "The only truth I know is you".

    G.... N....

This was our song My Kathy and me, I was a long distance lorry driver, middle east and continental, when I was driving deep in to he night I would sing along, sometimes with tears streaming down my cheeks as my thoughts went "to England where my hear lies"

    G.... N....

    May God bless her

    G.... N....

If god loves us cancer wouldn't exist

    G.... N....

@ChrisMcloviification You're thinking in a very simple manner. Branch out.
The point is that people suffer and find solace in God's love. What kind of a God shelters his people from all harm? He makes them like the Buddha before he was exposed to the world - naive and easily shocked.

    G.... N....

I wish you the Best . Thanks for expressing your love of your wife. It's awesome to know you found something good in this world.

  82. H.... C....

This song stands as tall as when I was first introduced to the world 😊

  83. K.... T....

My only goosebumps song ever. Just finished the book thief, my first time reading a book that made me emotional. Now have to listen to this for an hour. Thank you Paul ❤🤗😖😣

  84. J.... B....

SJ This could have been Your Song. But No

  85. J.... L....

"The Graduate", as superb as its original soundtrack.

  86. P.... W....

Sounds like it was influenced by Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather"

  87. J.... T....

This song pierced my heart when I was 14. I didn't know why. It was magical. Today, I am married to Kathy.

  88. g.... h....

wow. this song sucks ass. poorly written. no melody, harmony, nothing, just a piece of crap of a song. seems like simon thought (mistakenly so) that he was cool alone without the actual genius garfunkel.
