Paul Simon - Hearts And Bones Lyrics

One and one-half wandering Jews
Free to wander wherever they choose
Are travelling together
In the Sangre de Cristo
The Blood of Christ Mountains
Of New Mexico
On the last leg of the journey
They started a long time ago
The arc of a love affair
Rainbows in the high desert air
Mountain passes slipping into stones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Thinking back to the season before
Looking back through the cracks in the door
Two people were married
The act was outrageous
The bride was contagious
She burned like a bride
These events may have had some effect
On the man with the girl by his side
The arc of a love affair
His hands rolling down her hair
Love like lightning shaking till it moans
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
And whoa whoa whoa
She said why?
Why don't we drive through the night
And we'll wake up down in Mexico
Oh I
I don't know nothin' about nothin'
About Mexico
And tell me why
Why won't you love me
For who I am
Where I am
He said:
'Cause that's not the way the world is baby
This is how I love you, baby
This is how I love you, baby
One and one-half wandering Jews
Returned to their natural coasts
To resume old acquaintances
Step out occasionally
And speculate who had been damaged the most
Easy time will determine if these consolations
Will be their reward
The arc of a love affair
Waiting to be restored
You take two bodies and you twirl them into one
Their hearts and their bones
And they won't come undone
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones
Hearts and bones

Yet dylan gets the nobel prize for literature..simon before dylan: melodically and lyrically..

    p.... c....

Simon is a great artist, but Dylan won it fair and square. The nobel prize for literature is more than just melody and lyrics.

  9. J.... M....

An amazing song for one amazing couple. We love you Paul & Carrie xx

Paul Simon has an amazing gift for sound. His words sound beautiful together even if you ignore their meaning. The verse "One and one half wandering Jews/Return to their natural coasts/To resume old acquaintances/Step out occasionally/And speculate who has been damaged the most" shows attention to detail and an understanding of how words sound together. Each word was chosen not only for what it means but for how it sounds in conjunction with the other words. Paul Simon's songs fit together like a puzzle.

    j.... ....

Yes, he chooses each word for both sound and meaning. The phrase "easy time will determine..." could have been "maybe time will determine..." But "easy time" rolls off the tongue smoothly, lyrically. Paul is a lyrical perfectionist.

  22. M.... R....

This really is taking songwriting about as far as you can go. The storytelling aspect of Paul Simon lyrically has never been stronger than here. the musical accompaniment & everything contained within it: pitch, timbre, tone, right down to the specific choice of the instruments used....

Great song. Paul Simon is kind of a dick though. I like the bowtie on the Paul Simon freeway sign in Illinois, even though it's a different Paul Simon. Have a nice life, reader.

  32. R.... A....

    Wonderful production.

  33. S.... C....

    So beautiful .
    Just perfection .

  34. H.... S....

The literary aspect of this song is brilliant. One and one half wandering Jews are wandering through the juxtaposition of
the Blood of Christ mountains. She wants an adventure. Why
don't we drive through the night and wake up down in Mexico? It's too much trouble for him.
She asks "why don't you love me for who I am where I am?" His narciccistic answer is That's not the way the world is baby, this is how I love you baby.
A relationship that is not likely to last long long.

    H.... S....

But it in fact did last very long, albeit on an off. It went on for like 8 years after they divorced.

    H.... S....

@Geofanny YohanesBut they never drove all night to Mexico

    H.... S....

@Thomas Hofheinz perhaps they should have.

    H.... S....

@Geofanny Yohanes Yes. That's the kind of thing that makes for lifelong regret: "Why couldn't I have made her happy, just that one time?"

    H.... S....

@Thomas Hofheinz i'm sure they had a lot of sweet memories too. They wouldn't be together for so long otherwise.

    G.... D....

You're not wrong mate, this IS lyrical perfection. If I was with you right now I would shake your hand.

  45. C.... L....

One of the many astonishing songs - both musically and lyrically - in Simon's catalogue. What an artist!

  46. A.... M....

Or ever. Seriously, I'm just glad he occurred in the era of recorded music. Irreplaceable.

    p.... ....

yet bob dylan gets the nobel prize for literature..i don't think any songwriter derserves it, but paul simon should have been the first, or at least before dylan..

'The arc of a love affair. His hands running down her hair. Love like lightning shaking till it moans'. Beautiful lyrics.

  58. D.... F....

Yep this song was written about his love and divorce of Carrie Fisher

    D.... F....

And Carrie's Mom, the wonderful Debbie Reynolds, died a day after her daughter. It's true: people can die of a broken heart.

    D.... F....

No he wrote this song before they married.

    D.... F....

@Major Denis Bloodnok no he wrote this about their divorce but they got back together again after the divorce and had a long relationship.

    D.... F....

@Chandra Leigh So Paul succeeded to write a song about his divorce before marrying and divorcing, what a great songwriter!!! See here: http://paulsimonsongs.blogspot.com/2011/10/hearts-and-bones.html

It’s not just “Hollywood” that does this. Not by a long shot.

  61. D.... L....

RIP Carrie... your gonna be missed....

  62. D.... G....

I think the line is "returned to their natural coasts". He's a New Yorker, she was from LA. Damn, I miss her already. We just lost something. Goodnight, Ms. Fisher.

    D.... G....

    You're correct. It's coasts.

    D.... G....

I´m a great great fan of Paul Simon, and just knew through this video about he and Carrie Fisher....They were both two amazing people, truly artists.

  63. M.... M....

    That song is so stupid.

  64. B.... S....

    RIP Carrie

  65. D.... K....

    RIP Carrie ♥

    D.... K....

I can almost see her asking him the questions in this song, maybe as a way of clarifying what she meant to him or asking to be accepted for all of who she was. Either way it (their friendship /dating life)did last an awfully long time-until about 1991-so something must have been there underneath all the celebrity crushes and public adoration. What a wonderful way to apologize( if that's what this was meant to be) for any mistakes he may have made. You don't have to look far to hear the love in his voice.

RIP Carrie we still miss you!!

  66. R.... J....

This song is totally spellbinding, I've always been entranced by it from the first time I heard it many years ago. I saw Paul Simon once in a studio interview and someone asked him 'what was his favourite song' and he said 'hearts and bones is my greatest work although the general public do not share my view'. This is certainly a song that has matured with years like a fine wine. It just gets better and better. For me, Paul Simon's artistry speaks for itself, he truly is the master. beautiful sound, beautiful songs. The master song writer of our times. :-)

    R.... J....

Yeah, every generation throws a hero up the popcharts

    R.... J....

@corkykab In her comedy special, Carrie talks wistfully and hilariously about this song (“I’m the half.” “Who had been damaged the most?! Right here!”) She plays a bit of the song and announces that she didn’t get the legal rights to play it, but since she didn’t ask Paul for anything in the divorce, she considers it her alimony.

    R.... J....

I am listening to this again after 5 yrs of listening before. I e's thinking, I love this song and it's his best work. The lyrics are tremendous....they paint such a mental image, it's spectacular. It brings me to tears. Bravo, Mr Simon, bravo.

    R.... J....

@Donald Rohan - I never really followed Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds until just before they died. I find the entire family story to be amazing, E Taylor the whole bit. I'm only assuming from an outsiders view, that this song tells a story of a very charismatic woman that loved adventure. In this example she wants to just run off to Mexico at a moments notice and Paul was the more realistic, responsible one of the two. Super lady, I'm sure would light up a room, mingled with her Mom's friends and was popular with her friends from SNL. Although she had some mental issues, Paul Simon loved her very much, (btw his Wiki profile never mentions that he was married) I could go on from there, but again, I can only assume, so I'll close it off that Carrie was a lovely carefree woman, and Paul 14 yr her elder, had a more responsible head on his shoulders.

    R.... J....

@J T Another great line from Carrie's special: "When his best friend Mike Todd died suddenly, my father rushed to be by his widow Elizabeth Taylor's side...and eventually worked his way to her front."

  67. P.... V....

one of low of the best songs i ever heard! hearts and bones!

  68. W.... H....

Happy 75th birthday to the one and only Paul Simon!

  69. n.... n....

This song is about Him and Carrie Fisher

    n.... n....

    +Fanvidx Hello...Good for you then :)

    n.... n....

He and Carrie Fisher were married. This is a post breakup song, recorded not long before they married.

    n.... n....

Exactly, Melora. People often say this is about their divorce. It isn't. In fact, it couldn't be, because it was written and recorded before they got married, let alone divorced. They broke up a lot during their lengthy relationship.

    n.... n....

And the fact that they were dating on and off for at ;east 8 years after they divorced must mean something. He was and is her ONLY husband(she never married the father of her daughter).....think about that. I guess in a way their friendship was at least restored , for a while at least. BEAUTIFUL!!

I like your comment because your last name is gillespie. And it reminded me of dizzy.

  75. T.... ....

It's about him and Carrie Fisher.

Spoiler: They don't get back together.

    T.... ....

This is about a breakup they had before they got married. The wedding in the song is Lorne Michaels.' Simon was the best man and was there with Carrie. Most people assume it was about their wedding. The song was recorded before they got married.

  76. D.... J....

So much soul this song has! I love this! :)) makes your morning's!

  77. L.... P....

Great song from an underrated album...
