Paul Simon - Duncan (Live From A Prairie Home Companion) Lyrics

Couple in the next room
Bound to win a prize
They’ve been going at it all night long
Well, I’m trying to get some sleep
But these motel walls are cheap
Lincoln Duncan is my name
And here’s my song, here’s my song

My father was a fisherman
My mama was the fisherman’s friend
And I was born in the boredom
And the chowder
So when I reached my prime
I left my home in the Maritimes
Headed down the turnpike for
New England, sweet New England

Holes in my confidence
Holes in the knees of my jeans
I was left without a penny in my pocket
Ooh-wee, I was about destituted
As a kid could be
And I wished I wore a ring
So I could hock, I’d like to hock it

A young girl in a parking lot
Was preaching to a crowd
Singing sacred songs and reading
From the Bible
Well, I told her I was lost
And she told me all about the Pentecost
And I seen that girl as the road
To my survival

Just later on the very same night
I crept to her tent with a flashlight
And my long years of innocence ended
Well, she took me to the woods
Saying here comes something and it feels so good
And just like a dog I was befriended
I was befriended

Oh, oh, what a night
Oh, what a garden of delight
Even now that sweet memory lingers
I was playing my guitar
Lying underneath the stars
Just thanking the Lord
For my fingers
For my fingers

  1. c.... ....

    Love ❤️

  2. S.... D....

The smallest little change to the lyric is like a nod to the 21st Century. In the original he creeps to her tent with a flashlight.

  3. J.... C....

    Que MARAVILHA. Beautiful and wonderful.

  4. L.... H....

Love the opening lines of this song. So risque for 1972. I was a college Sophomore.

  5. .... ....

    這是Paul Simon在葛芬格之外的一首大經典。

  6. m.... ....

His old songs are the best.

  7. L.... P....

Who is listening to this in October 2019?

    L.... P....

    Lisa Poulin I’m listening 😃

    L.... P....

Me! When this came out, I was a virginal teen longing to be one of the “couple in the next room tryin’ to win a prize”...

  8. A.... P....

Kind of Chris had gotten his mandolin tuned before one of the greatest songwriters ever started to play.

    A.... P....

No kidding. What a dork up on stage. "Hey, look at me, everybody, I really groove with the music.......oops, out of tune."

  9. d.... ....

    Punch Brothers were tight.

  10. F.... P....

    ¡FABULOSO EL GRAN PAUL SIMON!

  11. L.... C....

This group of musicians oozes talent. And Paul Simon isn’t bad either. Just the best singer-songwriter ever. The group nailed this.

  12. S.... K....

    ポールサイモンはいつ聞いてもいいね!

  13. S.... P....

Jude Law was killin it on the mandolin

  15. T.... A....

    The man is a genius.

  16. j.... ....

Wow. It’s been nearly 50 years since he put that song out and he can still execute it brilliantly. One of my favorite songs of all time. Love you Paul.

  17. D.... L....

Man, this is a sweet song. That man has written more quality songs about the human condition and being on the road and all that other stuff that indicates that life is a mystery to be experienced. Love that man.

  18. R.... O....

Amazing that his voice hasn't changed in 50 years. Astounding

  19. I.... T....

Like an answer to The Boxer

  20. P.... ....

Iused to play this all th time when the album came out-but P Simon wouldnt play it live....till 2015...worth the wait.

    P.... ....

Piggy-218 what’s the album called. Pardon my ignorance

  21. P.... R....

Please listen to this song on the album ‘Rhymin Simon’....just perfection.

    P.... R....

It's on the album "Paul Simon," not TGRS.

  22. H.... C....

You're the great sing a song writher. Paul. Slip slidin away. All the way . From South Korea.

  23. G.... l....

    pure magic

  24. J.... R....

What is that lovely stringed instrument Chris is playing. So sweet.

  25. g.... ....

I am so pumped - I am going to see his Farewell Tour on 9/7 in Tampa.... CANNOT WAIT...., have always loved this man's songwriting and composing style...

  26. e.... ....

Best live version since Live Rhymin'

  27. R.... L....

There is Bob Dylan and there's Paul Simon. He need's hust a bit more respect.

  28. M.... B....

Just awesome! So pure...going down and back to his roots. Good old Pauli...and this beautiful band backing him with so much feelin'. Thanks so much for sharing this!

  29. P.... A....

So many great lines in this song; That is certainly one of them.
Including the best opening line ever written
"Couple in the next room ... are trying to win a prize"
    and
... Trying to get some sleep; but these motel walls are cheap."
    and
"Holes in my confidence... I had holes in the knees of My jeans."
    and
"later on in the very same night... she crept to my tent with a flashlight."

Hell ; What am I talking about ? It is just pure genius all the way thru.

  30. K.... W....

Very happy I came across this. Wish I was there.

  31. w.... v....

Anyone know which guitar paul Simon is playing?

  32. g.... m....

    fantastic

  33. .... ....

    fantastic(* ̄ー ̄)b

  34. E.... G....

Inspiración pura de la música del Perú.. tierra de los incas.

  35. O.... ....

Que Paul Simon regale al mundo maravillas como esta hermosa cancion hasta que las fuerzas se lo permitan.
    Saludos desde Peru

  36. D.... G....

A great song, but somehow I feel the story is unfinished. How did he end up in the motel room? What happened to the girl?

    D.... G....

Dion Good that’s how music is, it is more about describing a moment than telling a whole story.

    D.... G....

Jacob Dexter not all music are like that, but Paul Simon focuses on moments a lot, and it's beautiful.

  37. E.... K....

    "I wished I worn a ring, so I could hawk it." ...
"Thanking the lord for my fingers."
Paul Simon, ever the gifted bard... Thank good ness!

    E.... K....

    *hock, not hawk :)

  38. e.... l....

I told her I was lost and she told me about the pentacost!!!!!!!!

  39. a.... ....

i would love to be 1/10th as talented as chris thile... but alas...

    a.... ....

adrock1011 I’d give my left nut to be 1/100th talented as Paul Simon

  40. P.... H....

How did I miss this last year?!  What an amazing blend of instruments and musical talent!

  41. e.... l....

fantastic lyric-plus 2 fiddles and a banjo lady-every thing about this song is perfect

  42. p.... ....

Oo-oowee, I was about as destituted as a kid could be
and I wished I wore a ring so I could hock it
    I'd like to hock it

  43. d.... ....

Paul ""still has it" after all these years...keep on going Paul. See you back in Grass Valley, CA again in 2017. One of the best shows I've volunteered for!

  44. C.... T....

    Brilliant. Beautiful.

  45. J.... L....

did anyone notice jude law is playing the mandolin?

  46. L.... C....

I can't stop listening to this. It keeps hitting me deep in the feels consistently.

    L.... C....

Lance, A good poem will always speak to the soul

  47. J.... H....

    i hear this song-? 10th grade-the picture-painted-by paul---only--the likes-of harry chapin----can like wise---can take you there

  48. t.... ....

Noam Pikelny couldn't make it? Or was it a deliberate ditching of the banjo player?

    t.... ....

I joke as I notice Sarah Jarosz playing clawhammer...

  49. N.... E....

That fiddle gives it a melancholy tone which really works. Paul sometimes goes out of his way to deviate from the original melody, but he's faithful to the original here & it's all the better for it. Absolutely beautiful song.

  50. T.... ....

Thanks for all you have given me since i as a boy .50 years of joy :) Paul Simon, Sting,Mark Knopler, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones. What would my life be without you :)

  51. C.... ....

Gosh, he writes the most perfect songs...

  52. J.... L....

    one of his best songs.

  53. T.... 8....

I'm so happy he started playing this song again. Paul you're great! Do it one more time for the fans; invite Artie out on tour with you, please...

    T.... 8....

He did not perform this song on his farewell tour. (Yet--has been mixing it up a little on the encores)

  54. E.... S....

    Gosh.  Need a break?

    E.... S....

    Elaine S n

  55. m.... ....

I so love that the band gets that they are playing with/for a legend. How lovely :-)

  56. P.... B....

....even now that sweet memory lingers... and you see the stoic band break out into smiles :)

  57. r.... t....

    M a g I c a l .

  58. r.... ....

    excellent

  59. L.... A....

Amazing - he is just amazing. Clear tone of an angel's voice. Thank you Mr. Simon for the gift of music and rhyme.

  60. E.... S....

    Nothing but applause from me.

  61. D.... S....

Wow. then again, Andrew Bird, Paul Simon, Chris Thile. And my newest favorite drummer, Ted Poor. :O

  62. F.... L....

"Just like a dog I was befriended". Ever since hearing that line for the first time it always gets me right in the gut.

    F.... L....

hey,Freddy, i know what you mean. it's not that line for me,but the bass and guitar line after the chorus in Graceland. it hits me hard every time and i don't know why.

    F.... L....

I just saw this. I have exactly the same feeling with the bass line in graceland. This guy has got some magic in him

    F.... L....

    Freddy Lubin why?

    F.... L....

@Norma Tible So joyful and so sad at the same time.

    F.... L....

Freddie lubin,, yes,,the song is poignant and that line “ just like a dog I was befriended”, is sad, a person is so vulnerable

  63. j.... m....

    classic

  64. j.... k....

Nisu ni primetili da su sa puta istinskog života neosetno prebačeni na mrtvi kolosek čekanja bez kraja i cilja. Ne osećaju to svoje čekanje kao teret ni kao poniženje, jer su se i sami pretvorili u čekanje...

  65. M.... B....

    magnifico Paul... come sempre.

  66. P.... T....

Nice sound but lose the clown.  He's just too distracting!

    P.... T....

+Pam Tryph He's the first person in thirty years I've wanted to punch. Chris Thile is clearly thinking he's doing the audition for his place in Paul's band!

    P.... T....

Chris Thile is just enthusiast. Love watching Chris. He is clearly completely in to it

    P.... T....

Pam Tryph Chris Thile is a kinetic performer. He is absolutely into the sound and words. obviously, music is very emotional to him. he isn't just hearing the music, he's feeling it which is really the point of music.

    P.... T....

You shut your mouth about Chris Thile dude is a legend

    P.... T....

Maybe you don't listen to great musicians regularly... Clown? He's only one of the greatest musicians in the world right now, have some respect.

  67. d.... ....

Paul Simon played the soundtrack for my youth. Chris Thile (in all of the various forms in which he appears) is the sound track for the last 15 years. This song is like having my life flash before my eyes...and it is beautiful.

    d.... ....

    daldoc76 fucking great post.

  68. b.... m....

wow, great version. i think this might be paul's best band since the band from peru(was it machu pichu?). thanks for sharing!!

    b.... m....

+bryan mannoia Urubamba! Check out "Live Rhymin'" from 1974.

  69. z.... z....

    Semplicemente meravigliosa

  70. d.... ....

The Quentin Tarantio guy is all I can channel. Love Paul but all I see is Quentin jammin out

    d.... ....

    Well...I see Jude Law ;)

    d.... ....

LOL, the Jude Law guy is Chris Thile from Nickel Creek :)

    d.... ....

And the guy next to "Jude Law" playing violin kinda looks like Ryan Gosling with a full beard and stach :) :)

    d.... ....

Well, Paul is looking more and more like Mel Brooks!

  71. F.... A....

This Paul Simon's answer to the rather trite Rocky Racoon

  72. R.... ....

Woah this dude sounds SO much like Paul Simon!

  73. S.... R....

    amazing1

    S.... R....

Paul kept me sane , during an insane time of my life . Wish I could see you live in Nottingham on the 12th November

  74. P.... B....

The man still sounds super... lovely version... can't wait for the new album...

  75. F.... T....

I have so much respect for this man, great musicians as well. He still sounds so wonderful, so excited for Stranger To Stranger.

  76. D.... S....

That violin!!! <3 I like to call Duncan my "comfort song," kinda like comfort food, and this particular version gives me the chills! I love you, Paul ~

  77. S.... M....

TOUR WITH SARAH JAROSZ AND THE PUNCHBRO'S !! XOXOX

  78. A.... M....

    Still the Man!!

  79. P.... K....

Best version of this song I ever heard.

  80. k.... l....

    He's still got IT.

  81. K.... S....

    He sounds so great!

  82. a.... ....

If you turn your head away from the screen this sounds like the original record. Unbelievable how well his voice has aged!

    a.... ....

    arniebunny

  83. B.... B....

Seriously musical group of players. Nice!

  84. D.... V....

I was there. This was absolutely amazing.

    D.... V....

Oh you lucky person I wish I could see him live. Would love to go to the next Chris Thile show this month but it’s a bit far to travel 😢

  85. D.... D....

This was a wonderful show, bringing many fun memories as I watch the snow fall so beautiful. Paul Simon Thanks for all you do.

  86. B.... ....

I didn't know he still sounded this well! The new song "Wristband" gives hope for a new album!

    B.... ....

+Bergenslarsen Paul Simon's voice is still virtually unchanged.

    B.... ....

+arniebunny He's been looking frail on some of the newer photos of him. I agree with you. Still sounds beautiful.

    B.... ....

+arniebunny I was thinking the same thing. You could close your eyes and it sounds very much like the original recording.

    B.... ....

+Paul Jacobson How little his voice has aged is ridiculous. My friend reckons he's got some sort of Dorian Gray thing going on and his real voice is locked in an attic somewhere! He's definitely aged the best of all the senior statesmen of music.

  87. C.... M....

    wonderful..thank you so much!

  88. f.... ....

    unbelievable

  89. B.... P....

Thank you so much for this !
