Paul Simon - Darling Lorraine Lyrics
The first time I saw her
I couldn't be sure
But the sin of impatience
Said "She's just what you're looking for"
So I walked right up to her
I introduced myself as Frank
From New York
New York
She's so hot
She's so cool
I'm not
I'm just a fool in love with Darling Lorraine
All my life I've been a wanderer
Anyway Lorraine and I got married
Ant the usual marriage stuff
Then one day she says to me
From out of the blue
She says, "Frank, I've had enough
Romance is a heartbreaker
I'm not meant to be a homemaker
And I'm tired of being Darling Loraine"
What!? you don't love me anymore?
What!? you're walking out the door?
What!? you don't like the way I chew?
Hey, let me tell you
You're not the woman that I wed
You say you're depressed but you're not
You just like to stay in bed
I don't need you darling Lorraine
Darling Lorraine
Lorraine
I long for your love
Financially speaking
I guess I'm a washout
Everybody's buy and sell
And sell and buy
That's what the whole thing's all about
If it had not been Lorraine
I'd have left her long ago
I should have been a musician
I love the piano
She's so light
She's so free
I'm tight, well, that's me
But I feel so good
With Darling Lorraine
On Christmas morning Frank awakes
To find Loraine has made a stack of pancakes
They watch the television, husband and wife
All afternoon "It's a wonderful life"
What!? you don't love me anymore?
What!? you're walking out the door?
What!? you don't like the way I chew?
Hey let me tell you
You're not the woman that I wed
Gimme my robe I'm going back to bed
I'm sick to death of you Lorraine
Darling Lorraine
Lorraine
Her hands like wood
The doctor was smiling
But the news wasn't good
Darling Lorraine
Please don't leave me yet
I know you're in pain
Pain you can't forget
Your breathing is like an echo of our love
Maybe I'll go down to the corner store
And buy us something sweet
Here's an extra blanket honey
To wrap around your feet
All the trees were washed with april rain
And the moon in the meadow
Took Darling Lorraine

Paul Simon Darling Lorraine Comments
Who writes the best breaking or broken relationships and makes it swing like some jungle hymn for the gods to dance to?
Like he's reading a book! Try Darling Larriane by the Knock Outs c. 1959.
Who is listening in 2019?
Merci Vincent! Et Paul. Repose en paix!
This is first time I've heard this song. GREAT!
Maravilla
THIS TRACK IS A CERTIFICATION OF HIS GENIUS....
Really. . . ? People think this is great? There's barely a melody, here. . It's just a lot of really talented session musicians backing what amounts to a rambling, aimless prose poem.
There are some really nice lyrics, here, but where are the strong melodies of the Garfunkel era and the years following?
But then, I feel very much the same about Graceland. I just don't get it.
It took me a long time to appreciate that You Can Call Me Al wasn't the only thing worthy of the man who wrote the likes of The Boxer and America. His solo career work travels down multiple riffs often ending up at a melody only for short bursts until the end of the song. They are so beautifully delivered songs, with such lyrical speed, that perhaps the beauty of their actual construction will always go underappreciated. His solo career is not about ominous angst "Hello darkness my old friend" but about a man who has enjoyed success, the pleasures and pains of love, an awareness of the world. Tender angst continues to exist in his music but deliberately not so luxuriating in solipsism - the community of African or Brazilian music acts as a complement to Paul Simon's utterly sincere soul. And they are fun songs.
Hey Picnicl, thanks for your response. If a guy (er. . . woman? Sorry if I'm assuming, here) as obviously thoughtful and articulate as you are likes Simon's later work so much. . . maybe I should give it another try.
@eyesuckle if Graceland and the albums after it are too large of a leap after enjoying S&G, you might want to start with Hearts and Bones.
Beautiful song...
First time I've ever heard Darling Lorraine. I'm crying xx
Amazing song, the first half speaks so much to me, even the first chorus.. reminds me of a break up, you should listen to "you're the one" its about relationships and how when they end both parties may blame the other but in reality it's no one's fault and that things change.. such a masterful musician

What you don't love me anymore is where this song gets addicted!
Not my favorite but a really fun song!
Probably my favorite Paul Simon song. Such a beautiful and sad depiction of relationships and marriage, but funny at the same time. He's a true artist and genius.
Yes . . .
I completely agree.
TRULY A GENIUS...

I'm just a fool in love with darling Lorraine...
This song makes me sad every time I hear it. I'm amazed that has not been viewed by too many people. Great music, along with Paul's usual, wonderful story telling.
You're The One is sort of lost in time! Its a shame! I cover 'Senorita with a necklace of tears' sometimes live at least.
One of the great American short stories.
Paul Simon is the greatest story teller in pop music, total bliss.
Dios mio, que idiota. No conocerias talento si te pegara un tiro en la panza. Tu que has hecho con tu vida? A ti quien te conoce?
Los celos amargan, y te han amargado a ti.
This song makes me cry every. damn. time.
One of the best storytellers of the century. An American bard, for sure.
You're right.
At first I thought this was a sad song, but it's not. How else can a lifelong relationship end?
As usual Paul has me reflecting. This time on my own (now) 40+ year love affair with my wife.
He has been a mirror for me for many, years. A foil for my own views. A poet from Queens!
Laurie Cohen ...sir , i m so touched by the way you feel and have written. cant express my feelings, not even in my mother language.just to tell you that im sharing your grace and happiness.
Vaya canción estúpida, Simon. Cada vez que sacas algo nuevo lo haces peor. Creo que me voy a oír canciones antiguas tuyas. Esas sí que merecen el tiempo y la atención. Qué mal has envejecido, hijo (digo musicalmente). Salud y pesetas, lo demás son puñetas.
Although a name of French origin, here in France, it is used almost exclusively for geographical purposes. I find this rather sad, because it is such a nice name!
On every Paul Simon album there's always at least one song that makes me ask, "Is this the best song he's ever written?" This is the one from the "You're The One" album. Utterly brilliant songwriting.
6:00 I get shivers every time. Such a good song
just the best, best ever song, so sad so beautiful.
