Paul Simon - Born At The Right Time Lyrics

Down among the reeds and rushes
A baby boy was found
His eyes as clear as centuries
His silky hair was brown

Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time

Me and my buddies we are travelling people
We like to go down to restaurant row
Spend those Euro-dollars
All the way from Washington to Tokyo
I see them in the airport lounge
Upon their mother's breast
They follow me with open eyes
Their uninvited guest

Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time

Too many people on the bus from the airport
Too many holes in the crust of the earth
The planet groans
Every time it registers another birth

But down among the reeds and rushes
A baby girl was found
Her eyes as clear as centuries
Her silky hair was brown

Never been lonely
Never been lied to
Never had to scuffle in fear
Nothing denied to
Born at the instant
The church bells chime
And the whole world whispering
Born at the right time

Paul Simon Born At The Right Time Comments
  1. LeslieGMN

This song BELONGS to the youngest of my three sons. Still does, and he’s twenty-six...

  2. zynjan

Erin Bode version is much better

    Ann Christie

    no effing way. just nope

    zynjan

Have you heard Erin’s version , so beautiful, not fast with no emotion like this version

  3. ralph Smith

His lyrics are so deep and profound, but they never detract from the amazing rhythms! It's hard to analyse true genius!

    Mister Drummings

Great observation; the lyrics and music complement each other perfectly.

  4. the buill

Just like I was, in order to appreciate great songs like this . ...born at the right time

  5. Sean Turner

Paul Simon at his best.... I have a great idea for a new super group, Paul Simon.. Bruce Springsteen and neal diamond... The new traveling willburys

    Toby Richmond

Wel Paul Simon and Sting did a huge live tour together in the past couple of years.
I forget if i was just U.S. or was a global tour.
You'll find a couple of interviews with the on Youtube talking about their idea of collaborating for a combined tour, (sometime before the tour began).

  6. John Maritato

A very subtle but on target dig at yuppie culture and their offspring.

    E. Essington

That's certainly part of it, but my overall impression is that of the sanctity of human life-- a force so strong that even a moneyed tourist cannot escape it. These three births are so different, yet all divine.

    Lauren Rowell

I don't see that at all. I agree with Essington's point of view, stated above, in that there is a spark of divinity in all of us. The first reference is about Moses (down among the reeds and rushes, a baby boy was found). The last reference to a baby being found is that of a baby girl. In other words, we all have the capacity to change the world. (FWIW, I'm not a fan of bible thumpers, and I'm almost agnostic at this point.)

    Stefanie Prejean

How? It is basically saying we are born at the right time for a purpose ( a real one for our own particular lives - not just to be breeding stock, male or female) It isn't about any particular group of people

  7. Nathan Minteer

    Spend those euro dollars

  8. Generation Fallout

    Always been lonely,
    Always been lied to,
    Plenty of scuffles in fear,
    Everything denied to,
    Born at the instant
    The world started dying,
    Whole world sneering
    Born at the wrong time.

    LeslieGMN

No, not lol. That version applies to me too, and born the wrong gender too.

    Stefanie Prejean

So sorry. Thought someone was just trying to make a parody of the song. Sometimes life can get everyone down.

THE song for the youngest of my three sons... yes, born at the right time. Thanks, Paul!

  13. trillium

it didn't seem like it for the longest, and i was a little late, maybe my fault, as i'm frequently late due to over anlayzing things...and other forms of fearing...but yes i was born at the right time...we all are.

    Katrina Tautjo

I was not. I'm stuck in the 21st century but belong there,in the 60s and 70s, when the music was so beautiful and authentic.

  14. Joseph Herbst

Totally awesome! Simon hits another one out of the park!

  15. heyimbigj
