Paul McCartney - On My Way To Work Lyrics

On my way to work
I rode a big green bus
I could see everything
From the upper deck

People came and went
Smoking cigarettes
I picked the packets up
When the people left

But all the time I thought of you
How far away the future seemed
How could I have so many dreams?
And one of them not come true

On my way to work
I bought a magazine
Inside a pretty girl
Liked to water-ski

She came from Chichester
To study history
She had removed her clothes
For the likes of me

But all the time I thought of you
How would you know that I was there
How could I soul-search everywhere
Without knowing what to do

On my way to work
As I was clocking in
I could see everything
How it came to be

People come and go
Smoking cigarettes
I pick the packets up
When the people leave

But all the time I think of you
How far away the future seems
How could I have so many dreams
And one of them not come true

On my way to work

But all the time I thought of you
How would you know that I was there
How could I soul search everywhere
Without knowing what to do

On my way to work [x2]

Paul McCartney On My Way To Work Comments
  1. G.... Z....

I hated this sing the first time I heard it but it grows on me

  2. u.... ....

This is billionaire Sir Paul going all working class from his roots. My favorite contemporary songs from him,.

  3. u.... ....

    This is

  4. Y.... ....

I remember when I first heard this song. I hated it. It was my least favorite song on the album. 6 years later, it's one of my favorites.

  5. g.... p....

I like this song. But, someone said that "New" is MACCA's best album. Not by a long shot in my opinion. Band On The Run was better (in my humble opinion). There's a lot of technical playing on this song e.g. synth's, special effect pedals & all sorts of distortion. I think this would have been a better song with just an acoustic guitar and maybe a hint of strings.

  6. W.... ....

Hey! my "like" was # 910 ..so, it was the "one after 909" :)

  7. C.... M....

    Love this song 💕

  8. D.... M....

    Found my coat
    Grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
    Found my way upstairs
    and had a smoke
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream
    On my way to work...

    D.... M....

    a day in the life

  9. r.... ....

In all of Paul's music, there are always these little beautiful creative flourishes. He's so playful the way he puts a song together.

    r.... ....

    Absolutely true!

  10. J.... l....

    Quiero ver sexo puro

  11. W.... ....

I like the Beatles big Beatle fan but in all honesty this is absolute SHITE , sorry Paul

  14. G.... G....

    good song Paul

  15. F.... G....

    paul at his best

  16. t.... ....

Fantastic song from an amazing album. Even in his 70s Sir Paul is making better music than the dross that you hear on Top 40 radio.

  17. M.... 1....

"How could I have so many dreams
And one of them not come true?"

    M.... 1....

  18. B.... ....

If paul sang this album just after the beatles... it could have been a phenomenal success

    B.... ....

    I agree !!!

  19. B.... B....

Love this song and love this album. James Paul McCartney is a phenomenal artist. He can still put good stuff out. Still cool for a dude in his seventies!

  23. R.... C....

So-so, but Paul seems to have lost the ability to write
a complete great song (My Valentine was close but almost
destroyed by the treacly middle, a real shame because the
rest was poignant and piercing a la Cole Porter.

  24. I.... ....

    Simply amazing.

  25. f.... p....

"On my way to work/I bought a mazine/ inside a pretty girl/ liked the water ski,
she came from chichester to study history/ she had removed her clothes to the likes
of me..." .This part is meaningfull to men, and the solo reminds us of some janpanese music ...this  song's a work of Art,  you may think it's better than the preceding one but this game has just begun, after listening to all the albumn New, it's a nonsense classify what is the best, all them tracks are excellent, they're prima!

  26. M.... ....

One of his best melodies in recent years. Just gets stuck in my head, in a good way.

  27. B.... T....

Some of these songs on the "New" album aren't bad.  I've found myself searching them out and listening.  "New" on the radio, then "Queenie Eye", then others.  This album may be an acquired taste for some but it's grown on me and I like listening to it.  I wish Paul's voice on "Early Days" sounded like it does on this track.  Did he try to sound really old on that one?  His voice is so much better on this track.

  28. p.... ....

I'ts always nice to know what Paul dose everyday about to go to work "Gud song"

  29. C.... ....

One of the least interesting songs I've ever heard.

    C.... ....

one of the least interesting and most clueless comments i've ever read!

    C.... ....

    Hee, hee, hee.

    C.... ....

Interesting is a word used only when someone cannot find a more interesting word to use instead.

  30. B.... G....

    I'm somewhat with
    cagedbutterfly93
1 : Smells like Magical Mystery Tour... - also bits of Sgt Pepper - like the little lead-in before every verse; after it, I expect the 1967 Beatles to break-in singing We're Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band... But it doesn't end there; throughout the rest of this NEW album I also hear nods to George and John, the White Album and the Let It Be album too. -All mixed-in with great new concepts too. Definitely Sir Paul's best album in years. Bravo!

  31. S.... ....

    YAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH   LOVE YOU PAUL!!!!!

  32. N.... ....

Canzone tipicamente "maccartiana" di quelle che non ti stanchi mai di ascoltare.

  33. c.... ....

Contemporary, relevant, exciting, and a superb song.  Sounds like Sir Paul is working, not coasting. Music has no retirement age except an arbitrary one that a musician puts on him or herself. This my new favorite song!

  34. T.... P....

I think Paul McCartney is one of the only older artist that have done an awesome job of keeping up with the times.

    T.... P....

Tyler Phillips , this very contemporary sounds and lyrics

    T.... P....

me & you , others do very well but not as genre swooping, blending and esoteric as Macca, but very brilliant in their works yet not as musically comprehensive...I am going through his solo catalogue and BLOWN AWAY

    T.... P....

Gray Elizabeth , Bowie was cutting edge....studied jazz and art....theatre, did broadway play

    T.... P....

He early on was the most contemporary....John and George got credit for it at time, but Paul was studio experimental and varied musical Beatle.

    T.... P....

Gray Elizabeth , yep, him and Bowie experimental....Bowie now dead....Paul DIFFERENT varieties of styles..

  35. I.... o....

love the song and the new record! Thank you!

  36. J.... B....

    good song thank you

  37. A.... P....

Queenie Eye is passable but i don't like the mix & can't understand the lyrics.

    A.... P....

Queenie eye is a game that Paul played when he was a kid. For example, you will going to throw the ball facing behind your playmates, and you are going to guess if who catch the ball.

  38. A.... P....

almost as bad as Bowie's new album.  Paul's voice sounds TIRED & Nasal. Too much touring can do that to ya. The songs are not clever or inspired. I don't have the courage to listen all night. He's great, but this, album, aint.

    A.... P....

this album is really good! what are you talking about!

    A.... P....

    Bowie's new album is great.

    A.... P....

@Paxys Gatos Off the ground is a good album! Listen "Off the ground complete works"

    A.... P....

    @Kevin Garcia I will. Thanks.

    A.... P....

Just bought the album and it's great. A lot better than most of today's crap, wouldn't you say! Paul, is a legend and this is another album to prove it amongst his bus load of number 1 hits!

  39. M.... ....

Yep, definitely one of my favs, as well!! He has a way with lyrics! He's seems to have incorporated his feelings in them of both the past and present...he's cleverly woven them together!! :) And he's still such a romantic!! I think John provided a great balance to that aspect of their writing! Overall, good CD! :)

  40. E.... O....

This song is a grower. I overlooked it at first in favour of other songs, but then I founded myself singing "She came from Chichester" and then...wham...hooked. That's quality song writing, and few can do this so consistently. Amazing Paul!

  41. R.... T....

Great song! You can picture the guy just going to work...looking at the people, picking up their cigarette packs, stopping at the news stand, clocking in, etc., and thinking of his dreams that didn't come true.

    R.... T....

Rex T , yep, his a day in the life type lyrics with beautiful tune....his another day everyday type lyrics he writes so well describing our everyday lives

  42. L.... M....

PAUL excellent as always...BEATLES FOREVER !!!!

  43. s.... o....

    Shut the fuck off Stashit!

  44. D.... E....

Paul is the best, this should be the next single.

  45. J.... d....

    Nice melody great song

  46. S.... G....

    Paul Mccrapney!

  47. A.... V....

i picture paul walking through a snowy lit street to this

    A.... V....

I picture Paul going to work.

  48. E.... X....

Paul,no one can compete with you.You are one of a kind. Thanks for being.

  49. f.... ....

    The best song in "NEW"!

  50. P.... O....

    Great song, great record!

  51. t.... j....

    great song,suck it,Stacy!!!

  52. J.... Z....

    Just love this song!! :)

  53. K.... J....

Wow!! This song is definetly my favourite on "New" :D I love the melody! Great job Paul! You're awesome! :D I love you <3

  54. l.... ....

Stacey you thick fuck. Go back to your shite.

  55. J.... Z....

Shut up Stacey...the only crap is your comment

  56. S.... G....

    This is crap!

    S.... G....

    U is crap m9

  57. D.... ....

In a word: brilliant! One of Macca's best post-Beatles songs

  58. P.... S....

My first listen....good lyrics....still not blown away, but I will still buy the CD.

  59. c.... ....

gtfo. everyone else sounds like Paul McCartney.

  60. c.... ....

    LOL! Great post haha

  61. M.... ....

I thought that they lyrics were a joke when I first heard it - but now I love it. It's addictive! Superb album.

  62. E.... ....

Finally great music + meaning full lyrics thank you paul <3

  63. C.... B....

Lame, immature...probably sums you up too.

  64. M.... ....

This is my favorite song from New! I love the melody so much.

  65. D.... ....

    Que genio!!!

  66. A.... M....

Have to admit I did laugh at the lyrics when it first started but that slider guitar on the chorus completely changed it for me. You can tell that McCartney has stepped back and let the producers like Mark Ronson & Paul Epworth inject some of their flare into the record. This is what he should of done a long time ago!

  67. A.... M....

There you go people, that's how start a comment nice and end it as a narrow minded moron.

  68. y.... ....

This is a great album. This song has a bit of Traveling Wilburys in it.

  69. E.... ....

pretty sure everybody sounds like paul mccartney.

  70. t.... ....

i might murder you for this comment

  71. J.... L....

9fwXAvSA-CM is my favorite basically struggle

  72. C.... A....

    Sounds kinda like Imagine Dragons

  73. J.... M....

Still isnt released in the US... OF FREAKING COURSE.

  74. T.... ....

Thank you Paul for your music.

  75. N.... Q....

The best album of the year! :) :D
