Paul Kelly - Our Sunshine Lyrics
There came a man on a stolen horse
And he rode right onto the page
Burning bright but not for long
Lit up with a holy rage
No turning back for the child of grace
Never known to hurt a woman
He never robbed an honest man
His mother held in jail, his daddy dead
And daily rising the price upon his head
Our sunshine, our sunshine
Through fire and flood, through tears and blood
Through dust and mud still riding on
Forever trapped in a suit of steel
Betrayed by his companions
And the train waiting down the line
Forever tall on a bareback horse
Getting through by the skin of his teeth
It's one more for the ladies
Now one more for the police
Riding all night hungry, tired and cold
Into the misty morning
He'll never grow old
Our sunshine, our sunshine
Through fire and flood, through tears and blood
Through dust and mud still riding on
As he stood before the judge’s chair
He said ‘I’m free and easy-I’ll see you there!’
Our sunshine, our sunshine
Through fire and flood, through tears and blood
Through dust and mud still riding on

If you're going to write a song about Ned Kelly how about getting the story right? Ned was NOT betrayed by his companions as the song says. Joe Byrne was killed. Dan and Steve Hart came out of the pub firing at the police when Ned called them. It was Ned himself who warned the Greta Mob and the sympathisers that the game was up and insisted they go home. Ned was betrayed by the school teacher, Curnow, who could never be called one of his companions. Once the train was stopped Ned knew it had all gone awry and decided this would be the last stand. Not how it was planned but that little shit Curnow ruined it all. The brave police shot hostages freed by the Kelly's, including two children and an old man. Ned had the right idea - those troopers deserved to be shot dead in the wreck of a derailed train. They were murdering bastards, just like the three who died at Stringybark. Kennedy, Lonigan, Scanlon and McIntyre went out into the bush to commit murder, armed to the teeth, disguised as prospectors and carrying body bags in which they intended to shove the dead bodies of Ned and Dan. I respect the modern Victoria Police and I'll say this - anyone who compares today's force with the pre-Kelly Royal Commission colonial force needs their head read.
good song
Some would call Ned Kelly a villain, others a hero. But one things for sure. He had (which today would be considered) an unfair trial!
