Paul Kelly - Billy Baxter Lyrics

I want to be like Billy Baxter
and lose my limitations
I want to be like Billy Baxter
and do imitations

Billy's got a thousand faces
he's a lover and a gambler too
Just to see him go through his paces
is a lesson for all the crew

'Coz he got a hungry heart
He got love to burn
'Coz he got a hungry heart
He got love to burn

Billy's in love with abandon
but he never seems to lose control
He can walk right through disaster
everyone in pieces but he's still whole

I want to be like Billy Baxter
and lose my limitations
I want to be like Billy Baxter
and do imitations

'Coz he got a hungry heart
He got love to burn
'Coz he got a hungry heart
He got love to burn

Hold it steady Billy
while I pour the wine
When you think you're ready Billy
play that pantomime for me one time

I want to be like Billy Baxter
I want to be like Billy Baxter
I want to be like Billy Baxter
I want to be like Billy Baxter

This was the first Paul Kelly song I ever heard. The silhouette of the trumpet player in the window stayed with me for life. Thought it was the coolest thing ever

is Red playing the sax ?

    D.... C....

    Wilbur did.

  5. V.... ....

Somewhat "influenced " by the Kinks 'David Watts' methinks.

I used to see Paul Kelly and the Dots at the Lansdowne, that was a great venue back in the time.

I am pretty sure that this was before Paul Kelly signed with Mushroom Records. Maybe it is for Copyright reasons?
Others on this thread will have a better idea of possible reasons.

This is not the original clip. The original clip was directed by Chris Langman, shot at JB Massons Studio in Collingwood (Non existent any more) and on Film by David Connell. We had no money to shoot it so borrowed equipment from Crawford Productions where we worked at the time and used short ends of film stock from "The Sullivans". The sets were canvas and we used silhouettes against canvas backdrops. Even the amplifiers that moved in the background were cardboard boxes. Jo Camillieri made a cameo appearance in the clip as "Billy". I know this because it was one of the first film clips I lit. Basically the ABC ripped off the look of the clip. It would be nice to see the real one on youtube.

Kelly is such a silly sod, he hates all of his early stuff, fuck knows why? You have to start somewhere and those Dots albums are good. I saw him play many times in 79-81, it was a good band, good songs, good gigs. What is it with Australian performers who have their head so far up their own arse that they choose to disown their early work, usually the work that made them what they are today.? Good to see the Hoodoo Gurus play their first two albums in recent years and the Models are doing the same. Paul Kelly should embrace his own career. He owes his fans that.

I'm gonna agree with that except it's not just an Aussie thing. Plenty of artists disown their early work cause they want to say it's all about their new found informed credibility. But that's the beauty of an artists formative and early work - they're often not in full control of it and some charming and happy accidents happen because of that. It's not like everything they do once they're "real" is gold - far from it. You wanna be a pop star - it's all in - warts 'n all. Anyway…the internet..:)
