Paul Kelly - A Bastard Like Me Lyrics
I was born in the bush near old Alice Springs
As far as you get from the sea
My mother was a fighter, my daddy was too
He never knew a bastard like me
From the desert and the hills to the sea
Much too young many died but I have survived
So lucky, a bastard like me
Oooh, so lucky, a bastard like me
Oh, I have survived a hell of a ride
Nobody knows a bastard like me
Call me a stray or a dog every day
Call me a mongrel half-breed
Watch out for a bastard like me
Oooh, you better watch out for a bastard like me
I've fought all the way, I fight every day
You can't stop a bastard like me
I've taken my licks, I've taken my kicks
I am a man of degree
I wear the scars, I earned them so hard
Every day in the lucky country
Oooh, every day in the lucky country
I've taken my licks, I've kicked against the pricks
Oh, try and stop a bastard like me

Sorrow and joy rolled into 1 tune..
Amazing lyrics and a love for life x
this turned me on XD
Beautiful - made me cry I met Charlie many moons ago... it was a privilege.
This song, along with Paul's "From Little Things", and Tim Finn's "Parihaka" are reminders of how inhuman the British were to the people of Australia and the Pacific. Having moved to the UK in 2002 I can tell you that not much has changed amongst the ruling classes here. The British bourgeoisie are vicious sociopaths and they are not to be trusted. Fortunately they are now fighting so much amongst themselves that they pose much less of a threat to the world.
From a Scottish person. We feel the pain and the rage.
so from the UK and my Sister - then living in Perth- sent me the Deeper Water CD been a massive fan since and lucky enough to have seen him live a number of times and meet him twice after concerts in Manchester (UK) What a humble guy but brilliant songwriter - for me the best Oz has ever produced and worldwide in my Top 10 artists of all time= he should be HUGE worldwide imo
great song
Another anthem by Paul Kelly.
Poignant and Brilliant PK, Charles Perkins was a Champion and a Warrior.
Love it!!!
Paul Kelly is the only musician I've ever witnessed give thanks to everyone involved in putting on an event, including the land (and its rightful owners) on which he is performing. He thanked everyone starting at the cleaners to the stage builders, lighting, audio, sound, and then everyone else at the top. True Aussie legend who knows what it takes behind the scenes to put a show on. Gratitude and humility for such an awesome human sharing his art and soul with the world. ~~~and I just thought I had to sing.
What a song! Thanks for creating this and bring his memory to light.
Amazing ballad as always mate.....
