Patty Griffin - Wild Old Dog Lyrics

God is a wild old dog
Someone left out on the highway
I seen him running by me
He don't belong to no one now

Dropped him out on 93
Mange was setting in on his hips and on his knees
Between the highways running north and south
We pulled on over and we put him out

Willie said he was old and going blind
Momma told me how she didn't mind
When Willie kicked him with his shoe
He just climbed on in just like he knew

God is a wild old dog
Someone left out on the highway
I seen him running by me
He don't belong to no one now

It's lonely on the highway
Sometimes a heart can turn to dust
Get whittled down to nothing
Broken down and crushed
In with the bones of
Wild old dogs
Wild old dogs

Dropped him out on 93
Tall grass was waving there just like the sea
He tore off running like we set him free
Just disappeared right in front of me

God is a wild old dog
Someone left out on the highway
I seen him running by me
He don't belong to no one now
He don't belong to no one now

Sometimes I share Patty Griffin songs with the people but I work with late at night and then the next day I pretend to have made a mistake. I say oops that wasn't meant for you but it was meant for them and if they listen to it then I have made a difference. I love Patty Griffin she's my hero.

    o.... b....

    Well your an idiot.

glad I found this performance. Nice to know what this great song was about. Looking forward to a new album from Patty in a couple of day!

good lord, patty griffin is talented..... turning the heinous treatment of dogs into such a beautiful song is amazing.

  9. a.... ....

Heartbreaking..the song..the poor dogs who are abandoned . Rotten people with no heart, no conscience..what a world we live in.

  10. M.... L....

    When I hear this song, I think of;

    - Prince.
    - Princess- Jabar- Prissy- Sam- Awker- Ellie- Emily- Elwood- Uno- Chloe- Chip- Dale- So many othersTheir memories are burned in my mind, the pain I felt knowing they were dumped and left to fend for themselves. We took them in the best we could, though some we couldn't keep.

Thank you, Patty, for having such a heart of gold that you'd write a song to those poor rejected souls.

  11. T.... H....

So heartbreaking. I can’t imagine doing that to that to a poor dog. And the way she expresses the dogs pain is haunting & tragic. You just want to cry.

  12. Z.... C....

    Wow, alot of insight.¡!?

  13. C.... A....

This song always makes me cry. The scenery she depicted in this piece is so vivid and clear that hits me to my heart. It makes me feel like I was sat in that car, right next to her, looking at the sunset and following that running old dog with my eyes. ❤😢

  14. .... ....

şunu dinleyen başka Türk yok ona üzülüyorum

  15. K.... G....

Nobody cared about that wild old dog but you did, and wrote a song in his memory. Thank you for being such a beautiful soul. ♥

    04MSCENTRUM SHE DIDN'T SAVE HIM??????

  17. m.... ....

I love Patty, I really do but lately she sings so sharp sometimes, it kind of puts me off some of her songs... not sure why, I only noticed it on her last CD.

  18. p.... ....

Would like to know how some people can live with themselves, leave alone other creatures.  So sad for that dog.  Thanks, Patty.

    "It's lonely on the highway

    Get whittled down to nothing
    Broken down and crushed
In with the bones of Wild old dogs"
    Pure Genius that Patty is.

oh oh this reminds me of a story I saw on tv where this guy was building fences for his farm and eeeee ran over his dog good grief the poor pup
so he took it home in the back of his truck and gave it a bruial by the good ol oak tree in his big farmyard very sad ......
so the family all grieved and went to bed so sad
anyway the farmer got up at 5 the next day to go to work and lo and behold there was the Dog he buried sitting in front of him wagging his tail ...all dirty and hungry
guess ya keep a good dog down

bless you, refugee--i,m a keeper of lost dogs--i;ve lost count--somewhere around 20--at 74 i hope someone takes me home if i get lost.  Arthur.

  22. j.... ....

My favorite song from American Kid. I love a lot of them, but this one is my favorite.

  23. M.... D....

En plus de cette chanson qui est magnifique  c'est cette voix qui accroche

  24. M.... J....

Way better song than what's out there on the top ten hits, it has meaning, a story and emotion.

  25. G.... F....

Saw Patty twice in the UK this year - amazing voice - hope she comes back!

  26. C.... V....

What a theologically vibrant song. She is THE BEST EVER.

  27. J.... F....

YOU ARE George Jones' best backup singer of all time :) !!! I was so inspired by your show at the Fillmore / SF, you sparkled. So spooky + wise in a way that felt personal; damn vulnerable. This song feels like faith, loss + really looking hard.

  28. e.... ....

Patty: belting out songs conjured from personal experience with every ounce of her high-heel foot-stomping rock n' roll soul.

    Reality.

    Bliss.

  29. t.... ....

How the hell can someone "be done with" a dog?
People like that make me fear for our future.
    So sad.

  30. C.... ....

That is one heartbreaking song. Not often will a song bring you to tears but that one does.

  31. K.... D....

    Heartbreakingly true. I cried.

  32. h.... ....

As the three-time owner of abandoned dogs, I'm an easy sap for this song.

  33. S.... P....

This is the saddest song I've ever heard. So good.

  34. m.... ....

omg... i drive the same way and have experienced such similar things driving to and fro from College Station to Nashville & NE Arkansas
