Patti Smith - Changing Of The Guards Lyrics

Sixteen years
Sixteen banners united over the field
Where the good shepherd grieves
Desperate men, desperate women divided
Spreading their wings 'neath falling leaves.

Fortune calls
I stepped forth from the shadows to the marketplace
Merchants and thieves, hungry for power, my last deal gone down
She's smelling sweet like the meadows where she was born
On midsummer's eve near the tower.

The cold-blooded moon
The captain waits above the celebration
Sending his thoughts to a beloved maid
Whose ebony face is beyond communication
The captain is down but still believing that his love will be repaid.

They shaved her head
She was torn between Jupiter and Apollo
A messenger arrived with a black nightingale
I seen her on the stairs and I couldn't help but follow
Follow her down past the fountain where they lifted her veil.

I stumbled to my feet
I rode past destruction in the ditches
With the stitches still mending beneath a heart-shaped tattoo
Renegade priests and treacherous young witches
Were handing out the flowers that I'd given to you.

The palace of mirrors
Where dog soldiers are reflected
The endless road and the wailing of chimes
The empty rooms where her memory is protected
Where the angel's voices whisper to the souls of previous times.

She wakes him up
Forty-eight hours later the sun is breaking
Near broken chains, mountain laurel and rolling rocks
She's begging to know what measures he now will be taking
He's pulling her down and she's clutching on to his long golden locks.
Gentlemen, he said I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards
But Eden is burning either brace yourself for elimination
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards.

Peace will come
With tranquility and splendor on the wheels of fire
But will bring us no reward when her false idols fall
And cruel death surrenders with its pale ghost retreating
Between the King and the Queen of Swords.

Loved this absolutely fabulous musician since I was a kid.

    A strong woman, unique

  3. w.... ....

A poetic delivery. A divine portrait. Patti injects nubile life with it simplicity. Xx

  4. M.... C....

She could be singing this in esperanto. It would still sound stunning.

  5. V.... K....

I know people like Dylan's covers by other artists more than the original version. I don't. The covers are often "sweet" and "melodious." Dylan's versions are raw, chaotic, weird, not hung up on making the lyrics sound "sweet."

I like this cover though. Something about the lyrics' cryptic and "longing" nature wasn't lost in Patti's singing.

She is a much better singer than given credit for.

A gem of a cover by Ms. Patti. Any artist who gives more credence to the masterpiece of an album that Street Legal is . . . well, welcome into my musical library (plus she has performed with Mr. Dylan). And the locust's sang . . .

  12. R.... B....

Patti Smith saved my life. Ok maybe not my life but certainly my death

  13. a.... m....

agree...Patti turned this into something Dylan meant but just could not show

  14. k.... ....

I want to hear Neil playing Old Black (not singing) on this.

And the V.U's "Hey Mr. Rain" not singing at all on this.

How does this have so many likes??Do you guys actually like this???? She sings to you like you are retarded, in a slow over pronounced tone, patronizing... im not trying to offend anyone, but just take a minute and go listen to Dylans version and youll understand what i mean. It is an amazing song with great depth that captures the spirit of rock,n,roll, gospel ,folk and the future.....Not this watered down horseshit

  33. H.... M....

This and Dylan's original are both equally as amazing imho. Dylan is my favorite artist, so i'm pretty picky about the covers of his songs, and this song covered by Smith, All along the watchtower covered by Jimi, and Mark Lanegan's AMAZING cover of man in long black coat are my top 3

  34. S.... F....

Keep on rocking in the free world.

  35. D.... J....

The Dylan version is very good, but the instrumentation I always thought was a little bit off. This version is quietly intense in its own way.

  36. N.... R....

I used to listen to this particular song, on 8-track, Dylan. Over and over and over, when I was about 9. It was, and remains the only time I want Dylan to shut up. Only Patti could pull this off. Bryan Ferry has done many Dylan covers. I think this scares even him. Gorgeous.

    N.... R....

    nailed it

  37. R.... S....

these lyrics make no goddamned sense whatsoever . love patti smith but the poetry is just airheaded phsyco babble imo .

    R.... S....

    @Paddy Ohara yes , i know . dylan . i still like rock that tells a story . eg ; ( alice cooper - man of the year )
thats one hell of a story bout a man who appeared to have it all . there hasnt been better storytellers since the bruders grimm . ( imo )

    R.... S....

    Robert Searcy
Tell the truth.. I'm into 90's Goa trance..no lyrics..

    R.... S....

@Robert Searcy Dylan has over 40 Albums and 400 songs. He has more than a few that tell a Literal Story if that is what you Desire. Yes Changing of the Guards is more cryptic. But it is essentially Dylans story up to that point. This is just before his Christian conversion. This presages that change that was coming.

    @viviandarkbloom100 i tried vivian . thats all i'll say ' :)>

  38. R.... F....

Is it just me or is the syncopation in this version of the song a triumph? That slippery drum bass thing really underpins this song and turns what could be just an ordinary cover into a brilliant one.

  39. B.... s....

Höre Patti Smith sehr gerne, aber da is das Original besser, von Bob Dylan. Aber schlecht interpretiert Sie es nicht.

  40. F.... K....

I was never a Patty smith's fan at all, don't even have any record of her, but this version is really "fuuuucking good"!!! I would also miss the chorus, the horns and about the theme, it's not that bad, but just one time somewhere inside would have been perfect..

Saw her in a bar in East Lansing Michigan in 1975. As she walked to the stage she passed within close arm distance from me. I could easily have reached out and touched her, but she looked as if she'd have torn my arm off and beat me with it. God, was it really that long ago?

Drunk' soldiers with satan supping his nectar down
    They wear a frown
    over the field,
where they lay the treasure maid down
    time has tolled
    just around time, newer best

where they retreat beaten from the street
see the flag that now they must wear
enrapt in the white vest, tightened round their chest

As Hades trapt them in the west
    peace shalom now come
Hades and her man have always been there
    and always yet to begun

And magick is surely in the air
    And her man,
    is still
still yet to awaken from his, long slumbering days
and always will be there and still yet to begun

Circling in cycles, the Earth lightened down
    Despite it burdens
    Spins on and on.

This little ditty came to me while i was 'High'
On fresh air and a cuppa tea, with a photo of my Marianne
Listening to Iggy Pop on my PC in another window, sing 'High on you' in the heaphones
been a long time now I've not been high on illegal drugs including ale, get with it, its for mugs.

I have called it 'Earthened in its ale forced fused haze, shaken off its dias in all the days.
