Wonderful song from a wonderful album.

A few days ago, we noticed our dog buddy being low-energy and lethargic; I thought she had eaten something she shouldn't have eaten, so we waited to see how she'd behave the next day. A day later, her conditioned worsened, and she was now unable to roll, jump on the bed, or walk up the stairs. We weren't able to get her into any vets since they were all booked.


Yesterday, we awoke to the sounds of our dog buddy whimpering and clawing the rug, with her back legs unable to move. She couldn't walk, and she couldn't stand. She was immobilized. Having called several vets and informing them of our emergency, we were able to get her in and have her X-Ray'd in between other pets' appointments. They called us and let us know our dog buddy had a ruptured disc along her spine, for which we had the options of finding a surgeon to examine and treat her for at least USD $6,000, or we could give her IV, painkillers, steroids...etc in hopes that her condition would heal by itself. Unable to to afford the former, we opted on the latter.


She didn't heal. Her condition worsened and she lost a lot of sense throughout her body, in addition to more motor functions. The vets informed us that even if she were fortunate enough to survive, or even if we had gone the surgery route at this point, that she would be living a life of pain and inability.


Today, just a few days before Christmas, we went to see our buddy just one last time - still in agony and shaking with fear, but still happy to see us. I held her as every part of her body started to slowly weigh down. I whispered my final goodbye, and in just a few seconds, her head began sinking; her life evaporating from her body.


I had never understood the attachment people had with their pets, and I've probably cried once or twice in the last decade. But today, I've realized that special connection I had, and whom she was to me and my husband, who originally adopted her from the rescue shelter before I met him. I guess we rarely ever realize just how special the connections we have really are - not until they're broken and gone.


So I hope we can all embrace the good people, pets, and things in our lives, and treat every moment like it's the last...because it might well be.


Also, I'm glad that I discovered this song on the same day I had to watch my dog die.
