Partridge Family, The - One Night Stand Lyrics
Every night - a different town - I sing my song
I play and sing - pack my things and move along
A pretty face, another place I never get to know
A one night stand, another show
My guitar - a railroad car - a bus or plane
Chocolate bar - and there you are - the price of fame
If I could do what I want to, I'd stay and never go
A one night stand is all I know
I wish that I could be two people
Instead of bein' on my own
I wish that I could be two people
And then I'd never be alone
Photographs of where I've been and all I've done
In this whole world - is there a girl - no, not one
Goodbye, hello - I've got to go - I hope you understand
A one night man is all I am
A one night stand, a one night man.
Doo doo doo...
Goodbye, hello - I've got to go - I hope you understand
A one night man is all I am
A one night stand, a one night man
Doo doo doo...

Easily their best song.
LOVE THIS SONG ALWAYS
I love this song. He was so cute
What a singer
I love this song! David’s vocals are STRONG and sweet. You can hear the vibrato in his voice! ❤️❤️
With right marketing this could have been a top ten hit, great song.
RIP Hal Blaine
:) .......
It seems a lot of the words in this song apply to David, especially when he says he " wishes he could be two people, then he would never be alone" He spent a lot of time alone in hotel rooms,as he could never go out in public, while his band and entourage hit the town. He always said how lonely it was. Still, it's a great song and David sings it perfectly. Rest peacefully sweet David.
I could sit and watch him all day and night xx miss you so much beautiful man xx can't believe your gone xx love you xx
I can see why all those 8 year old little girls shot to early pubescence. David's sweet sexy innocence stretches out from the little girls to the grandmas.
I was blessed to see him in concert in 2016 here in Branson. RIP David he was my idol as a teenager
This song was an accurate depiction of poor David's life from 1970 - 1974. He wore himself out with one night shows all over the US. This talented young man was caught up in a whirlwind and could not free himself. Sweet natured David became jaded and disillusioned during this time in his life, never fully able to shake his demons.
Totally agree with you!
I'm so glad I've rediscovered their music. Catchy tunes, and DC's voice is great. He has wonderful control.
I wish that he could be 2 people too, so that the second one was still on earth.
LuvTadnDixie Me too. The strange thing is my love for him had gone dormant for 43 years, but when he died it all came flooding back again.
For me it was a little different. I was about 4 or 5 years old when he was on the Partridge Family. His records were the first records I listened to and loved. Then the show went off the air and I sort of stopped listening to my Partridge Family albums and moved on. Then around the time I was in my 20s, they started releasing the albums on cassette tape and showing the Partridge Family on Nick at Nite. I bought the cassettes and enjoyed the songs as much as I did when I was a kid. It was in my 20s when I realized that David Cassidy had a really great voice (I loved the records as a kid, but now that I was older I really appreciated the songs and appreciated his talent as the lead singer even more). Then in my 30s, I bought the albums on CD. Then around the time I hit 40 I thought to myself, "you know when he goes someday, I know I'm going to feel something." He is the only celebrity I ever thought that about. I guess I felt I would feel like a part of me was gone. He was a bright spot in my childhood. I had a very happy childhood, but he was definitely one of the best things about my time as a kid. Now of course I didn't expect him to die in 2017, I thought it would be years and years from now. I recently saw him on Dr. Phil announcing he was ill and then all of a sudden I realized I really cared about this man and what happens to him. I only noticed how gorgeous he was recently (he was never a poster on my wall and at 4 years old I never noticed him that way, I just liked the records. I wish I was a teenager in the 70s, I would have been screaming over him too). When the news came that he passed I started crying. The man who made me happy and was a bright spot is not in the world anymore.
Wow you didn't notice his looks when you were in your 20s watching Nick at Nite? I was 10 in 1970 and I sure as heck noticed his looks, even though I didn't dare speak of his fantastic looks back then and never hung a poster on my wall or even owned a PF album... one of my friends had a PF album (the debut album) and she started talking about the song "Heartbeat" and how her mother explained "petting" to her at age 10!!
I wasn't ready to hear about necking and petting at 10....but I did notice his phenomenal looks and had a crush on him from around 10-13 or 14. It was so long ago. And I did like his voice and thought it was distinctive.
I later was watching MTV and wished they would show a video of him, they did show "I Think I Love You" and that was it! I hoped he would go further in the music industry.
Example: Michael Jackson as a 10 y.o. in 1970 had 4 #1 hit songs and then he later reinvented himself with "Off The Wall" and "Thriller" due to working with people like Quincy Jones and Bruce Swedien. The rest of the music industry thought MJ was washed up and Quincy said no he is not washed up. He brought in people like Rod Temperton and Steve Porcaro of Toto and Paul McCartney did a duet with MJ, etc...and there were many talented people working on those albums. MJ won many grammys for those 2 albums, mainly 8 grammys for "Thriller" and one for "Off The Wall"
David needed someone really phenomenal to produce some solid hit songs to really knock it out of the park imo. I remember he and Susan Dey were announcing the winner at an awards show and when Aerosmith won you could tell that David was wishing he could get some respect and recognition from the music industry....oh well.
I do enjoy all of his music though.
I was 9-13 when the PF first aired, had a poster and some of the albums ( I know I had Sound Magazine and Shopping Bag). Then one day in 1974 I was listening to a record in my room, like I’d done before, and I just started crying the cry of someone who is breaking up with someone. So I had to step away, grow up and listen to other people. Other than buying a PF Greatest Hits CD to add to my iPod in the 2000s, I didn’t do much in the 43 years until he died. I wish I would have started to pay attention again in the 90s or 00s.. I saw where he came to Epcot in 2007 through 2010 via YouTube but I had no idea at the time. I also heard he played The Villages in 2016. Now I’ve been busy downloading PF and solo albums (that I didn’t know existed) to my phone. I hope he can forgive me for not coming to see him in later years.
God he was beautiful!
David fans: I was so mad when David passed and the news kept saying he had a "wispy voice." THIS is not a wispy voice! Great singer!
I know, the idiots on television totally dissed him. When Mick Jagger passes away they can say he sang like he had marbles in his mouth. They'll say Jagger is a "rock god," etc. Just like they said that Tom Petty was a rock God. Nothing against either of those guys.
Is describing him with a wispy voice an insult? Never heard it described quite that way, but I'm not sure it's an insult. He had a very distinctive sound. On the ballads, it was "breathy and seductive, like he was singing in your ear." And when he belted the songs his voice was strong and clear. He had a great sound. Perhaps they were trying to describe his voice as wispy because it was breathy? Who knows. He was awesome though. There was a large out pouring of love on the internet when he died. But the media needed to respect him more. I agree.
If you read his biography, he tells how they ran him ragged and he used to record when he was bone tired. And he still has perfect control of his voice. Amazing.
Brilliant voice!
His voice was breathy at the lower notes but when he sang out strong, there’s a big difference. I love when his voice is more strong and less “breathy” ❤️
This is infinite, The sound of this as well as songs like #summerdays are sounding better today than they even did back then. Taking on a almost spiritual feel. Like they are transcending time and space. I think it’s time to re-release these songs so the new generation can experience them, they are quite profound. #DavidCassidy
that's from the sound magazine. I have the vinyl album very cool.
Wow, he was something special miss you David.
I think this song was written by Paul Anka.
There were a bunch of good songs. This is one of them.David liked this song.
This is an incredibly well written song in every aspect.
totaly agree
they were a great family. David Cassidy was so cute a shy a funny in this movie.
R.I.P. Dear David ♥
RIP David. We will miss you
REST IN PEACE DEAR DAVID, YOU STOLE MY TEEN-AGE HEART....
That was John Astin in the crowd. You'll all remember him as Gomez on the Addams Family
Yesterday I'd posted an article/blog on my feelings around David's passing. I've included a pic of my meeting him in 1990 in Toronto, Ontario.
I just read your article -- what a great read -- and love the photo. He was my first love, too, in elementary school. I met him in the mid-90s at a small backyard party in LA with his wife and son. He was as normal as pumpkin pie. I've been listening to the Partridge Family nonstop since he died. So many wonderful memories and GREAT songs. God bless you!
That is so kind P. Lantana, "Thank You!" We were both lucky to have met him!! RIP DAVID!!
Can you link to your blog post?
RIP David ❤️🙏🏻♥️

RIP David, we will miss you! This was my favorite song!
My first love, and now I say prayers for this talented man who brought joy to my life!!
Rose Petal You’re obviously a big David Cassidy fan as I keep coming across comments you’ve made on other videos that’s been posted too
Graham, I was a HUGE fan! I had his posters on my wall when I was a little girl and was lucky enough to see him at the CNE Grandstand here in Toronto! He meant so much to me as well as millions of other fans!
what we have here is proof that the Wrecking Crew was the greatest rhythm section in the history of EVER
Does anyone remember that Shirley Jones was a big singer in movies, see " Oaklahoma", and an academy award winning actress???
Yes, she was really the total package.
and Carosel
You should read her autobiography! She is my favorite (old Hollywood) actresses. So awesomely talented!
dam that boy can sing
I have always loved this song....such great memories
I wish that I could be two people. Imagine always having someone to do your hair and makeup (In approximately the middle of the song, the lyrics state, "I wish that I could be two people, instead of being on my own." So please don't report my post as irrelevant!
I really think that is a good idea!
Dawn Wilkins I GREW WATCHING THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY .DANNY PARTRIDGE WAS THE BRAINS OF THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY. I LOVE WHEN CHRIS N TRACY WAS GOING TO RUN AWAY FROM HOME.N THEY DID TO RUBEN,S APT.
I wish he, David would come out with some new stuff as good as this.
Another great song from the series. David - perfect as always. In 1991 he did a cracking upbeat rockin' version of this in concert in Chicago. Just as hot then and in this clip.
That would have been great to see.
Oh I need to seek YouTube for a vid of that! Have you tried looking?
Found it! https://youtu.be/DUKEeaRvE-U
The Partridge Family's homage to "Homeward Bound".
Love this
"One Night Stand" music & lyrics by Wes Farrell & Paul Anka (yes, the teen star of the 1950's) Thanks for posting this!!
Funny how the guitar sound continues even when Danny stops strumming.
That's the magic of T.V.
That shows how great a guitarist Danny was - LOL!
