Parton, Dolly - The Sidestep Lyrics
Fellow Texans, I am proudly standing here to humbly see.
I assure you, and I mean it- Now, who says I don't speak out as plain as day?
And, fellow Texans, I'm for progress and the flag- long may it fly.
I'm a poor boy, come to greatness. So, it follows that I cannot tell a lie.
I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
Cut a little swathe and lead the people on.
Now my good friends, it behooves me to be solemn and declare,
I'm for goodness and for profit and for living clean and saying daily prayer.
And now, my good friends, you can sleep nights, I'll continue to stand tall.
You can trust me, for I promise, I shall keep a watchful eye upon ya'll...
Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't-
I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
Now, Miss Mona, I don't know her, though I've heard the name, oh yes.
But, of course I've no close contact, so what she is doing I can only guess.
And now, Miss Mona, she's a blemish on the face of that good town.
I am taking certain steps here, someone somewhere's gonna have to close her down.
Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't-
I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
Cut a little swathe and lead the people on.
Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep...
And, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step...
Cut a little swathe and lead the people on.

Parton, Dolly The Sidestep Comments
It's Christmas 2019
Merry Christmas everyone.
Great choreography
this is one of the great scenes of cinema history
Guy: What the hell did he say?
Girl: Same as usual not a damn thing..
This gets me chuckled every time.
i love this movie!!!
I was there during the making of these scenes. My parents were extras next to Dom De Luise. Capitol scene was shot at night around 2 a.m. cold and rainy October 1980.
HE'S SO GOOD!
I've never seen this movie, but I've done the show - the costume designer was in charge of Dolly Parton's wardrobe at DOLLYWOOD. Also, when I worked on the Universal Hollywood backlot, I spent a lot of time at the Chicken Ranch set from the film. Charles Durning is great in this scene.
This is so damn stupid
Texas politics are not that complicated if you can shoot and teach Sunday school at the same time . You are Elected !!!
This is like modern day green new deal crap,
He got an Oscar nomination for this role. :-)
220% better than any actual politician.
I tried that hat move and got a neck spasm. Still worth it.
This should be played over any political debates anytime... or at least the opening music number... or closing... or both...
This is the best performance .
I was today years old when I learned that this role was played by the same actor who portrayed Pappy O'Daniel in O Brother Where Art Thou.
As a child int TX I knew about the Chicken Ranch as did all my friends!
When I attended TAMU 1979-85, there were STILL plenty of legends about it!
You can tell he's a Democrat.
Delightful
Talented, hilarious and such a good natured fellow
Republicans comment that this is Democrats and Democrats comment that this is Republicans. Listen to each other. This is all of those dirty asses.
I need to see this movie again
I saw Nancy Pilosi's last media interview and immediately thought of this clip.
Never gets old.
Charles Durning ..... a genuine Hero! ..... and truly missed .... R.I.P. sir!
I dont know what it is about this song/dance but it just makes me so un reasonably happy
That's me to the lower left holding rolls of maps at 3:30±. I'm in a few other shots, but friends I didn't tell about being in the movie recognized me from this shot.
This song is strangely catchy
I just watched Kamala Harris continually dodge the question of how much her health plan will cost and whether folks would have to give up their private insurance. And I thought of this number.
Not to mention Elizabeth Warren's sidestepping on her healthcare plans.
I think I want to do this musical video me and my top hat
the "hat trick" kills me another political visual gag.
I just watched this for the first time! My favorite part!!
I'm so jealous! I wish I could watch it for the first time again. :-)
hahaha 🤣🤣🤣🇳🇴
Watched the movie today and then had to look this up to watch this scene again! I love the little shimmy on the “ooh” and the way he pops on the hat and then turns into it. Great fun!
Mmmmmm, mmmmm who does this remind me of 🤔. This is the best scene from the movie.
This should be called the D.C. Sidestep as most of our politicians seem to be pros in this dance!
Charles Durning was a U. S. Army Ranger at Normandy earning a Silver Star and awarded the Purple Heart.
He sure played a wide range of roles. And was just as good in "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?"
This should be played every time a Republican opens his mouth.
Brilliantly done💕😊🇨🇦
I was married in this Capitol building, 2nd floor overseeing the library.
And you did not do a side step
Awwww, that's so sweet! :-)
That hat move!
Amazing talent. He was actually from New York born to Irish Immigrant father. He was more importantly a War Hero.
Great on NCIS
Charles Durning participated in Normandy invasion.
That was one great performance!
The highlight of the movie.
Great dance number. I cant move that well at a fraction of his age
Great actor!
Now Ms.Mona I don't know her😒
OH OH OH !!!OH WOW.
Most accurate political song I’ve ever heard
Its a song Elizabeth Warren sings when it comes Medicare for all
The Hat Exit Is Priceless .
this movie makes "the room" look like "citizen kane"
So applicable to current political dialogue, ahem, talk around I mean side step.
Jesus tell me if this is not the blueprint of how old Democrats act and react when they're asked questions
All of them, not just Democrats.
Except I don't think that either Republicans or Democrats can dance that well - or at least not with that much enjoyment.
Charles Durning was part of D-DAY invasion.
Yes. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, three Purple hearts and Later the Legion of Honor from France for his Heroic Service during the War
Just nothing but an American success story huh? He managed it all pretty much
DAB at 2:03
I wonder if he traveled to 2018 and stole it. Lol
More likely it was copied and pawned off as new, like the moonwalk....
~RIP Charles Durning~
Charles Durning was perfect for this number.
Friend:hey, you wanna hang out?
Me:
It behooves both the Jew and the Arab to settle their differences in a Christian manner.
The sad part about this is that this is EXACTLY the way most Politicians are today!
Nervous Chimera sadly no otherwise it would be more entertaining and less upsetting
They are EXACTLY like this!
They've always been this way
@Michele Walburn ,,have you been listening to all the promises that the demonrats are saying? They promas everything from soup to hay and IF they get elected nine times out of ten they will forget what they say or the blame it not passing on the other side. Heres some friendly advice from a no body from eastern Kentucky, just look at what they have done and how they acted and figure out what kind of a person they are. Cause if you look deep enough you will figure it out. It doesnt matter which side you are left or right and take a good look and see which person lies the less and doesnt make promises that you know they cant keep.
@hoskinmage The Republicans are exactly the same.
Truly love this seen.
Best part of the movie.
This and the scene with Burt Reynolds character wearing the Japanese slingshot underwear is what made me laugh most as a kid watching this.
As a kid i liked the aggie song
Deluise is annoying in this picture he's had better roles.
@Leonard Hughes Well Dom doesn't play the baddie very often. It doesn't suit him.
When of the best numbers in modern musical history (in my opinion).
This is a full mood
You can tell that Charles Durning is having an absolute ball with this scene.
He really makes it look like it's not a lot of tedious, hard work.
Haha. That was Soo good! I love that scene
HOPE he got a good award for it. What did he die of ! :(
@Heidi Christensen He was nominated for Best Supporting Oscar, but didn't win. He died of natural causes at age 89.
I think that's why I like it so much!
I wish all politicians were like this.
Sceeming, vague, sidestepping issues, spineless?
I have good news for you: They ARE!
@ExtrackterYT I think TenderQWERTY means it'd be better if they danced that well
